mbv to reunite?
« on: August 27, 2007, 12:55:00 pm »
Is the long wait finally over? My Bloody Valentine, the legendary sonic sculptors of feedback and tremelo who helped define the shoegaze movement only to disband after releasing just two full length albums, is set to make its first live appearance in more than a decade at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA in April, 2008. According to sources in the United States and the United Kingdom who are familiar with the negotiations, the band is close to signing a deal that will see a reunited My Bloody Valentine headline Coachella, scheduled for April 25??27, before embarking on a world tour sometime later in 2008.

A My Bloody Valentine reunion has long been the subject of intense speculation, with a seemingly endless stream of rumors surfacing each year about tours, reissues, DVDs, box sets, and even brand new recordings ?? but as of today none have come to fruition. The band formed in the mid 1980s and released a series of EPs on various labels before solidifying around the lineup of guitarist/singer Kevin Shields, drummer Colm O??Ciosoig, singer-guitarist Bilinda Butcher, and bassist Debbie Googe. After signing to Creation Records, the band released several EPs and two albums, 1988??s Isn??t Anything and 1991??s Loveless, now considered one of the era??s most classic recordings. After a bitter split with Creation, the band signed to Island Records (UK) in 1992, but never produced another release. According to a 1995 interview with Simon Reynolds, the band??s inability to meet their own aesthetic expectations and the financial stress of inactivity led to Shields?? ??meltdown.? The rest of the group drifted apart and My Bloody Valentine simply vansihed without ever releasing another album.

In recent years, Shields has been an elusive yet constant presence on the music scene, appearing on recordings and stages with groups like Experimental Audio Research, Curve, Dinosaur Jr, and Primal Scream. His solo work as a remixer and recording artist have appeared sporadically, most notably on the soundtracks for Sophia Coppola??s films Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette. And in the intervening years, the legend of My Bloody Valentine, a band who??s sound was long considered years ahead of its time, has grown much larger in its absence.

wow, starting the hype early this year... and going big, to boot.

will coachella run out of bands to reunite at some point?

and as amazing as MBV are, i don't see them having the pull to headline the final night.  RATM has a mainstream following, whereas MBV is underground to this day... hugely influencial but mostly among musicians, used vinyl store denizens and music club bboard regulars.

Kevin Shields probably got wind of Guns N Roses finally releasing "Chinese Democracy" and didn't want to be "enigmatic, reclusive rock star who hasn't released new material in the longest period of time."

I don't see them being a credible headliner for Coachella either.  However, if they tour I'm going to be pretty excited.  I never saw them back in the day and would love to have the chance.

Will the guy from Rancid be singing lead vocals?

I'm in if this is legit.

I don't see them headlining the last night but they could do one of the others for sure.

Kevin Shields seems to want to get the band back together (per his interview a little while back) -whether he can remains to be seen.

For some reason this page displays as blank for me.

I was curious about the source in part because it misspelled "tremolo" (as "tremelo") and "Sofia Coppola" (as "Sophia Coppola"), making me wonder how authoritative the rest of the article was.

From Billboard:

Report: My Bloody Valentine Mulling Coachella Reunion
 August 27, 2007, 12:30 PM ET

 Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Seminal U.K. shoegazer act My Bloody Valentine is considering an offer to reunite and co-headline the 2008 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. A tour would follow later in the year, according to a report on the Daily Swarm.

Best known for its profoundly influential 1991 album "Loveless," the Kevin Shields-led group has been inactive since 1995, although in recent years there have been occasional reports that it was working on a new album and a boxed set featuring unreleased material.

Coachella booker Paul Tollett politely declined comment on the report, but an MBV appearance would fit the festival's profile for luring long-dormant groups like Rage Against The Machine, Daft Punk and the Jesus & Mary Chain back onto the live stage.

It is understood that Tollett has been pursuing My Bloody Valentine to play at Coachella for several years; the rumors were loudest in the run-up to the 2005 edition of the event, which was headlined by Tool and Depeche Mode.

Coachella's ability to jumpstart a single act's career was proven with the recent success of Daft Punk's North American tour. The French techno group played its first show in nine years at the 2006 edition of Coachella and drew overwhelmingly rave reviews. "That is a lesson for a band -- if you can build yourself to where your show is so great that people are calling everyone around the world saying you got to check that out," Tollett told Billboard.com last week.

Since MBV's split, Shields has done occasional sideman and remixing work for acts like Dinosaur Jr. and Primal Scream. He has also contributed music to the soundtracks for "Lost in Translation" and "Marie Antoinette." Earlier this year, he told Magnet, "We are 100% going to make another My Bloody Valentine record unless we die or something,"

According to the Daily Swarm, a new My Bloody Valentine MySpace page and official Web site recently launched, but Shields' manager, Vinita Joshi, told the site "there are no confirmed [My Bloody Valentine] shows at all" at this time.

Having completely doubted this here publicly in the past, I have to admit that I may have to eat my words on this one. Maybe, considering Kevin and his ways. Besides these more recent articles, a fairly good friend of mine has led me to believe that something is up which is exactly opposite from any attempts he's made in the past to do just that. Said friend is in the music industry, knows Kevin and is Kevin's manager's brother-in-law. Guess I'll have to push him for more info though, odds are, I'll be sworn to secrecy.

Okay, last night I finally got around to emailing my friend about this. He didn't say that I had to keep this secret so I guess it's okay to share this with you. As of now, it looks like the Coachella appearance and a tour to follow is full on. Kevin wants to do it and everyone is doing their parts to make this happen. Just one caveat; it's Kevin Shields. He's such a wildcard which means that anything could happen at any time. So, no guarentees but this is right from the center of the camp. Right now, my friend is helping to get the MBV website going so that too should be active soon.

If my life lets me keep up with everything, I'll try to keep you posted with further details.

 Hey, Seth.....      :D

Now Slowdive, that's a whole other story and not one, at this stage, to be reunited; however, I would be more than happy to eat more words.

I was just listening to "Several Girls Galore", which could very well be my favorite MBV song, earlier tonight thinking "God, it would be so cool to hear this played live at 130db". One can always hope!
