concert for change
« on: October 10, 2004, 04:04:00 pm »
i don't know if this has already been introduced as a topic, but is anyone planning on going to this?  if so, is there a known schedule of bands yet?

I heard there's gonna be a lot of joint efforts onstage.  Rather than distinct sets like the rest of the tour, this is supposedly more condusive to cover songs, etc with various artists together.
(They're supposed to do some own material too.)

 Don't know sched.

I think I saw Mike Mills walking around 13th and G on Saturday on my way over to E Street Cinemas.

Some random should be going to bed thoughts

Man of the Hour John Fogerty

 Highlights of the shows

Stipe & Springsteen doing Because the Night
Stipe & Vedder trading verses on Begin the Begin
Mellencamp's blistering version of Pink Houses

Best set by a smidge - Spingsteen, REM a close second.

Mellencamp gained some respect in my eyes

 Babyface played that song

REM sounding great! Stipe very energetic, Mills and Buck swaping hair styles.

Jurissic 5 not really the best fit for the evening, very hard to place what they were rapping.

Pearl Jam a solid if a bit out of place set because it was a bit angry and less motivational.

James Taylor and Dixie Chicks kinda killed the mood after PJ and REM.  Nice songs tad blah...

DMB music for drunk white people to dance to, enough said.

Springsteen haven't seen him since the River tour and wasn't disappointed.  Bruce could easily have a second career as a motivational speaker.

Had fun a great show!  I suspect Fogerty sells out pretty quick.

as the hazy clears i completely forgot about the Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Keb Mo set which apparently made such an impact on me it was long gone by the end of the evening.  see James Taylor/Dixie Chicks for thoughts....

It's a shame he only got 2 songs.  I would have gladly given up some other artist's time for more Fogerty.

I'll add R.E.M. w/Springsteen on Man On The Moon.

Mellencamp is vastly underrated.  He can put on a fantastic show. Great way to start the night.  Too bad he played to a less-than-half-full house.

I had a hard time hearing a lot of the vocals last night, but their's were definitely the most difficult.

Lots of grumbling about their set where we were.  Mostly about song selection. New World was very nice.

I like JT and I thought the Dixie Chicks did a great job with Sweet Baby James.  But it just went on too long. They were good, but it was definitely a bit of a buzzkiller.

I'll rank this as most disappointing set of the evening. I like both Jackson and Bonnie a lot, but their set was just dull. At least it was pretty short.

Just to nitpick, they actually closed with Man On The Moon.

 Fun night.

Mellencamp was one of the artists that I lost interest in, "Authority Song" and "Pink Houses" were part of the college years soundtrack.  I'm kinda interested in seeing him again live.

Wow, Kosmo, you really did see the same show I did...I agree with all your highlights, though would also add REM/Springsteen doing Man on the Moon.  And I thought Tim Robbins with Pearl Jam was awesome -- both because I LOVE Robbins, he looked great, and it was the best song of the PJ set.

It was a really, really fun show.  We were in a bit of a celebrity section, with Meg Ryan and Ethan Hawke 8-10 rows up....We were in section 112, beside stage left.

Stipe was on fire, all night long, even in the crowd watching Bruce -- who was so on fire himself he had to douse himself with cold water during his set.  I'd never seen the Boss before.  Not my favorite music, but he really has a quality....

I missed Jurassic 5 completely -- potty break, and the one time there was a line (I think it was a popular potty break time).  And James Taylor was way too mellow to come after the great R.E.M. and hard-edged Pearl Jam sets.  Oh, and first time I've seen Dave Matthews, and the last.  John Mellencamp was great -- I too wish he'd played to a fuller crowd, but "Little Pink Houses" was awesome.

I loved the format -- there was rarely more than 10 minutes between bands (I counted 7 minutes between REM and Pearl Jam), and the short sets were cool for powerful sets blending bands I love, bands I've always wanted to see, and some new bands (Dixie Chicks were fun for 15 minutes, Dave Matthews was through in 30 minutes).

So I just now saw this in "Just Announced"

 http://www.documentarychannel.ca/promos/national_anthem_04/

 1. Opening Song with all artists
 2. John Mellencamp
 3. Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds
 4. Jackson Browne Bonnie Raitt, Keb Mo
 5. Jurassic 5
 6. REM
 7. Pearl Jam
 8. Dixie Chicks including James Taylor
 9. Dave Matthews Band
 10. Springsteen including John Fogerty
 11. Two Finale Songs

Was there an opening song?  Getting in to MCI was quite a clusterf*ck, seems like they didn't open the doors until 6:30 or even 7:00....Or a bunch of folks arrived at once.

I kinda wish I'd seent his list ahead of time, though it was pretty fun having no idea who was next.

And, does anyone else think the acts were arranged in order of 2003-2004 concert revenues?
