Tragically Hip in Pittsburgh?
« on: October 11, 2004, 02:09:00 pm »
I'm thinking about going to see this show on Sunday since I was out of town when they played here.
Anybody know anything about this venue they are playing, Rock Club @ Station Square? Is it a good place to see a show? Does it really not have a liquor license? Is it close to the Warhol Museum? Any other points of  interest nearby?

got dragged there when it was 'rock jungle' which was a terrible dancedancedance club. guess it could be ok, but the venue was large and oddly shaped. i hear they have free beer, which would rock even if it was like beast light or something.

as far as being close to the warhol, its not walking distance, warhol is on the north side (aka norse side) and station square is on the south side kinda sorta. maybe 10 minutes tops by car depending on traffic/absurd construction.

south side has good bars and interesting shops. this is the neighborhood i lived in when i was still in the burg, i like dee's cafe and the smiling moose. station square itself has some interesting stuff, i never ate there much. primanti bros is a must whenever visiting pittsburgh, unless you are like a vegetarian or something. oh, and station square is right by the incline! ride that too

Thanks for the info! Sounds like the club may not be so great [your description makes me think of Nation] but I'll have plenty of fun things to do before the show.

If you like record shopping check out Paul's in Bloomfield for great CDs and Jerry's in Squirrel Hill for the biggest vinyl selection you've ever seen.

Thanks for the info, but  I'll have to stay away from there. When I was in Austin a couple of weeks ago I went to Waterloo and spend nearly $200 in less than 10 minutes, on Texas-based artists. Record stores are way too dangerous for me.

Don't encourage me Sir HC...right now I have about 200 CDs waiting to be listened to.  NOT including all the demos in my office, which I've whittled down to about 100 or so. Before I go buying any more stuff I need to finish going through what I already have. It would be one thing if I could just buy one or two CDs at a time, but unfortunately I am incapable of doing that. FYI I've been taking my cast-offs to CD Cellar in Falls Church lately...some of it's good but I just don't listen to it or DJ with it anymore, but some of it is worthless trash.

I'm going to the Pittsburgh show, too! Make sure you get there early enough to check out the opener.

Any good places to get a drink around Rock Club? I've never been to that place.

I definitely want to see Sam. I was given a CD of his when I was at this music festival in Ottawa last year but I've never seen him play.
I think there are some bars in the same area as the club so it shouldn't be hard to find a drink. This club sounds kind of weird though.

there are a few cheesey bars there, better bars down carson street a half mile or so.

its really weird that they are having shows there, i'll see if any of my friends have been there yet. rest of the roster doesn't look all that great

I'm probably too late to be of any help, but just in case...

Too bad that the Hip are playing this horrible venue - every club in town is trying to take advantage of the recent closing of the only real mid-level music venue. Thus, you've got gigs in dance clubs.

Don't count on the free beer. Even if they have it, it'll likely be a curcus. Better to check out some of the joints recommended prior. I would not hang around the immediate area. It's very cheesy & touristy. All the big chains. Head East on Carson Street - to the Southside. Lots of great places like god's shoeshine mentioned. There's a pub/bar on 18th-20th street called Smokin' Joes that's very cool until the crowd rolls in. One of the best beer selections in town. There's also a decent record store near there - Dave's Music Mine.

If you've got car access - you can easily cross the rivers & hit the Warhol and/or the Mattress Factory  MF .

I'd go out of my way to hit the best bar in town too - Gooski's on Polish Hill. It's above the strip district.

Nothing is really very far in Pgh & you shouldn't have much trouble navigating around on a Sunday afternoon. (There's no football game.)

I'd like to go to the show, but I've got a little post-London recovery going on. And I've got to save some energy & $$ for the Liars/Blonde Redhead show on Monday.

Thank you Grotty! Too bad this place is horrible, I figured it was pretty bad based on the description I found. But I intend to enjoy the show anyway, I've loved The Hip for over 15 years. And I'm looking forward to bumming around town all afternoon, will probably hit one of your recommendations for dinner after the Warhol museum and go up the incline to check out the view Monday morning before I have to leave. If you change your mind about going to the show, I'll be the short redhead w/ glasses lurking around the soundboard, come say hi.
