Roll Call:Cheap Trick
« on: August 06, 2004, 10:19:00 am »
With so many of you going to see the washed up Cure and all of the other lame bands tonight, nobody has mentioned the show by the washed up Cheap Trick at Camden Yards on Saturday. Maybe if we're lucky, they will play "The Flame"?

I know Bags and her 73 Prada wearing gay friends will be there, but anybody else?

I know I'm excited to see an improving O's team.

So this was interesting -- a LOT of fun, but it's in a parking lot out on Eutaw Street *outside* Camden Yards.  You don't need to go to the game to see the show, so we got there and the place was PACKED.  Our VIP tickets did us not much good, as everything was crowded before the game even ended, and according to the woman at the 'VIP' area entrance, "there were just so many people, we started to let them in here as well.  We're trying to get them out now..."  Yeah, good luck.  But, having the VIP tickets gave us the impression (and balls) to believe we had some kind of rights so we got up front and in to that section.

Show was fun, about 75 minutes and they played songs they don't often play, like "Tonight It's You," my fave, by chance.

And the best part, to me, were two little boys on their dad's heads pounding their fists in the air right along to the music.  They were not there together, one was about 5, the other about 7 -- the 7-year old knew all the words and was air drumming on his dad's head.  As Tooms said, "I hope I have a kid like that."  Great fun.

And the party bus...un-effing-believable.  Stripper pole.  CDs I burned.  Oh yes, it was a fun, long day.  We even caught up with Medusa at the Black Cat Right Round 80s dance night.  Oh my, oh my.  I'm very, very tired today....    :D

We went to this show. Cheap Trick proved that yes, indeed, in a 30 year career, the 3 songs you hear on the radio are the only good songs they've ever recorded. Some of it was laughably bad. It was 80's night at Camden, and there were lots of mullets to prove it. So many damn good looking people in Baltimore, I'm sad I ever moved away. The highlight was when they played "The Flame", their greatest song ever. At that point, we had to leave, the excitement was overwhelming.

Come on, *everyone* who really loves music knows The Flame sucks, and is the one song they didn't write (and in this f'd up world, was their biggest radio hit).

I certainly don't mind if anyone is not into Cheap Trick, but of the 23 folks with me, most were not fans and thought the show was great.  We were way up though, may have made a difference.

We also may have had more to drink than y'all, as we had a designated driver (and I think we drink more than you generally).  Probably made it easier to deal with the crowd...there were some freakers.

How can you say all these bands (The Cure) are washed up, yet still don't think the Old 97's are just as old and just as washed up. Does the word "Old" not give it away?

Just because a band is old doesn't make them washed up...Neil Young and Crazy Horse certainly aren't washed up...but the Cure is well past their prime.

Rhett would dig Cheap Trick if they wrote some depressing odes to the werkin' mayne

I might dig them more if the singer didn't look like the third Nelson triplet. Where'd they get that guy?

Robin's looking haggard, no question.  But he can still sing a snappy tune...Rick, meanwhile, looks great.

Who is Rick? The bass player? My wife thought the bass player was cute, for an old guy.

God, your so right, bleach his hair (unless he already did it himself) and he could be the third member of Nelson. What an awful group that was.

I highly recommend the bus...we were in the  red one.

I'm keeping this photo small, but the stripper pole's in the back in front of the backseat.  On the left, the white 'box' is a huge cooler.

FYI, I'm not a "let's have a crazy bachelorette party" kind of gal, and I wasn't aware of the stripper pole when we reserved the bus.  I knew (1) it had a great sound system and we could bring our own CDs, and (2) it fit us all, and had banquette seating for socializing, and (3) strobe lights!  So, who knew the pole would be a hit.  On the way home, only, I might add, and primarily with the guys!   ;)

It's very obvious Rhett that you weren't at Curiosa. Somehow, a band that seems to be dated were so right now with no staleness whatsoever.

Smackie, don't forget that Bags has 51 Gay male friends. I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that that bus was a great time during every second of the trip. Bet they would even make me enjoy a Cheap Trick concert and I hate Cheap Trick.

Bags, thanks for posting the link for the bus. That's a fantastic idea for various agendas. Too bad that we didn't all know about it for the Garage Fest in NY right now. Do you know if they do out of the MD/DC/VA excursions or over-nighters? I'm sure that would be pretty pricey though but worth it if you have the bucks.
