"You know, you don't have to look like everybody else to be acceptable and to feel acceptable." 'Mr. Rogers
I always wanted that train that went to the Land of Make-Believe... it was my favorite program next to Picture Perfect and 3-2-1 contact, now if that didn't make me a geek then it must have been the dukes of hazord lunch box.

I got a chance to meet Fred Rogers in Pittsburgh in the late 80's. I was working on a show at Carnegie Mellon and went to dinner with a few folks one night. He was sitting 4 tables away from us. All the folks I was with knew I was a big fan. They prodded me to aproach him. I finally relented and walked up to his table. I could see he was with his wife and what looked to be his grandson. So instead of doing the autograph/picture bullshit,I just said to him"Hello,Sir, I really enjoy all of your work....you're the greatest" and shook his hand.He just looked up at me and smiled.....you know the smile.....and said "That's very nice of you, young man"....I smiled and walked away immediately back to my table......I couldn't wipe that shit eating grin off my face the rest of the night....Fred,you were the coolest.....R.I.P.

I too wanted that trolley. He was always there, great man, and cool in a geeky way (those shoes of his!). I will have to put a cardigan on...

Mr. Rogers would always comfort me when I was sick...therefore, I always associate that kind soul with vomit. He'll be in my thoughts next time I have the flu.

I remember once when I was about 3 or 4, I was being a jerk and my father said he was going to call Mr. Rogers and tell him I didn't like him and I screamed "NOOOOOOOO". Most people in a couple generations were influenced by him. A sad day, but he lives on.

Last July he was given the presidential medal of freedom by George Bush at the White House. Damn, I'm full of somewhat useless information....

I watched Mr. Rogers religiously every day when I was little. "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood..." I remember one day, he made a snack of wrapping cheese around a banana. I ran to the kitchen to try it. And to this day, I still make it as a treat. Yum. He really did have the most wonderful way of talking and speaking to other people...
This is a little funny. I will never forget the day when he made a mistake. He was doing something in the kitchen and dropped an egg ("Oh, whoopsie!") and made a huge mess. I was so horrified that Mr. Rogers could make mistakes! Ah, the innocence of youth...

mr rogers is prolly the only celebrity ever whose death hasn't been accompanied by some tasteless comment or joke. i think that says a lot about the man.
the neighborhood feels a little different today.
