i find it more amusing that nearly all the posts on this trivia are about oasis (with a mention here and there of some other huge britpop artist).

Noel's house was called "Supernova Heights" and he also drummed for a band who never saw the light of day called Tailgunner...

What is the significance of the titles: "England vs. America", "Soft Porn" and "London"?

They were the among the working titles for Blur's "Life" trilogy (respectively):

"England vs. America" = "Modern Life is Rubbish"

 "Soft Porn" = "Parklife"

 "London" = "The Great Escape"

Even better, the working title for Blur's "13"?

"When You're Walking Backwards To Hell, No One Can See You, Only God"

 That's a GREAT title.

Blur may have released better records than this one, but it's still the one I listen to the most:

I know that maybe these records don't qualify as "Britpop", but I was just telling Bags the other night how much I still enjoy all these records even now.

you rock bearman!   :)   i was waiting for a posting from you that would include something about the inspirals and neds. those are some brilliant albums! I love the blank stares i get when i wear my 'kill your television' shirt. the bands are usually the ones to recognize it, and sometimes comment on it   :)

oh btw - arent the charlies supposed to be touring soon? i thought i heard that from a friend in scotland, but cant be sure of that.

Thanks xneverwherex! God I miss Inspiral Carpets. Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time, they wrote some great tunes and put on some of the very best shows I've ever seen. Their show in 1991 I saw is still the most pychedelic thing I've ever seen.

Definitely House of Love, and these two:

My kneejerk on this was Justine, but... I feel like it was like someone else. I'm blanking on it. Mike Joyce? Actually, now that I've written it, I think that's right. He was going to be in the band for awhile, but Brett decided he would be the elephant in the room.

What are the first words Damon Albarn said to Graham Coxon?

And to keep the Oasis love alive, two people who have been in Oasis were in an earlier band together. Who were they and what was the band?

I saw all of those bands put on some tremendous shows. Carter USM in particular was always consistent, when I first saw them in 1992 they had a wild light show.

The Charlatans were always awesome too, way better than the trainwreck that is the Happy Mondays. I got to see the Stone Roses twice, the first time was at WUST and it was great. Saw them a few days later at a festival thing in Chicago and Ian Brown couldn't hit a note to save his life.

Ned's Atomic Dustbin were great, but there were always some knuckleheads at their shows for some reason, not sure why. I never got to see Ride, which I was bummed about. They played with Lush back in 1990 I think and that would have really been a great time to see them. The Soup Dragons and James were OK, but to me Catherine Wheel was really something. I'll never forget seeing them blow INXS off the stage, then a couple weeks later at the HFS Nutcracker thing they played AFTER Tony Bennett and did a full electric set. The band left the stage at one point, Rob played "Wish You Were Here" and then went right into "Black Metallic", which was totally sublime. Sigh.

damn i love reading those stories. too bad i missed out on seeing the inspirals. i did manage to catch carter USM in high school with EMF. they were playing at a gym at UC Davis. I dont know if they went to SF, but since I was in HS i couldnt get into the clubs. but i just remember it being pure insanity when both the bands played.

love seeing the charlies. i remember seeing them with the dandy warhols, and that was one of the best shows ever. 2 of my favorite bands = heaven.

ok i have so much work, but feel free to share those stories. i def enjoy them.  :)  did you ever see the house of love?

oh never saw ride either but saw andy play with squire in hurricane #1. or was that the seahorses. im sure i mixed up a bunch of bands and members, but i saw both of them actually  :)

Yes, Mike Joyce.  I remember when I saw Elastica at the old 9:30 club Justine telling me that that single was going for about a hundred pounds with all the Suede/Elastica hype.  She had a box of them that she just threw out.

When Damon and Graham were students, the Jam were popular and a lot of students aped their style.  Therefore, Weller-like brogues were popular.  Coxon had a knock-off pair on and Damon came up to him and said something to the effect that Graham wasn't wearing the right ones.  He (Damon) was wearing the "proper," expensive, "true" brogues.  Damon Albarn, Mr. Charm.

Gem Archer was the lead singer in Heavy Stereo and Andy Bell was sort of the Paul Carrick of Britpop.  He was in Ride, Northern Uproar and Gay Dad before joing Oasis.  Maybe Alan White was in one of those bands.  I don't think Bonehead or Guigsy were in any of those bands.

Here's a great trivia question:  What is the connection between December 12, 1986, the song "Panic" and Graham Coxon?
