Live roll call (and question about 9:32)
« on: August 11, 2004, 01:48:00 pm »
Anyone going to see Live this weekend at Merriweather? It's been several years since I last saw them. They put on a great show, even if their music hasn't kept up.

By the way, can someone tell me if the 9:32 is enclosed or covered? It looks like heavy rain on Saturday and I dont want to get drenched hanging out there. Thanks, all.....

10 years ago, I would be running you over to get to this show. It's too bad really, they were a good band and had a lot going for them. But whatever happened after Throwing Copper sent them into a spin. You can even deal with parts of Shitty Samadhi and The Distance to Here, but 5 is just plain awful and i never even bothered to pick up Bird of Pray. As we would say in 5th grade, "that's just gay." It is too bad though. I'm waiting for them to play smaller venues again, so maybe i can relive some of my youth. I never need to see them play a shed again.

Only time I saw them was when PJ Harvey and Veruca Salt opened for them at Merriweather.  I was there just for PJ but decided to give Live a chance.  Left after 3 songs.

Live has become qiute the interesting quandry in my eyes.

It's a completely tolerable experience to see them acoustic (borderline enjoyable if they pick the right songs, and it doesn't have to be limited to Throwing Copper tunes), but a train wreck "plugged in" and it doesn't matter what songs they pick anymore.  I've seen them many times and would rate them in this order:

The peak: mid nineties supporting throwing copper

The Slide: all acoustic opening for Janes in 2001

The end: plugged in out in Hershey, PA in 2003.

ditto.

well, throwing copper wasn't a terribly exciting album either.  someone, be it the band, producer or label, decided that the band would be better served focusing on the less talented members of the band (i.e., ed and that other guitarist), instead of keeping the focus on the two very talented members of the band (i.e., drummer and bassist).

lamb, saw that show in salt lake city in 96.. .live did an acoustical bit in the middle of their set, where they played one or two gbv songs.  loved the pj harvey set though.

Live sucks.  Terrible lyrics as well.  I remember one song they used to play on the radio that said something like "let's hang out in a church, we'll go find lurch".  And also something about "let's go hang out in a mall" and somehow rhyming that with the word smorgasboard.

When Live came out we all thought they were just some cheap Jane's knockoff, and I wasn't a huge Jane's fan anyway.

I used to say Live sucked Live. I saw them about a month ago, didn't pay much attention, but they were at least 5% better live than there were a few years ago.

Agreed that Live has really fallen off. The last time I saw them was about six years ago at the Fillmore in SF. That venue tends to elevate bands, so I had a good time regardless.

But....I figure....I've got lots of drink tix for the 9:32 and for $10, it's probably a cheaper night out than just about any other bar in the area :=)

I was a big fan in early 90â??s & saw them a few times at the old 930.  But, each album after Mental Jewelry got progressively worse.   If I want to hear live now, Iâ??ll turn on mix 107.3
