anyone else's ipod do this? how do i fix it?
« on: January 23, 2006, 02:38:00 pm »
my fucking ipod (about a year and a half old) constantly skips on its own...so ill be in the middle of a song and it will just start skipping song after song. i developed a trick where i pressed the forward button as hard as i could and it would then work, but that no longer helps. i am attempting to get a new one for free through a recall that happened on these ipods, but if i dont wanna go through that trouble, how much would it cost to have my ipod fixed??

Mine was doing that for a while, and sometimes it would just freeze up. I'd reset it, and then it would show a folder icon with an exclamation mark. I took it to an Apple store, and it worked fine when I was there (figures). So when it happened again, I kinda hit it a few times, and now it's been working perfectly fine ever since. Guess sometimes you just gotta show your iPod who's boss...

(I wouldn't really recommend this solution, but it actually did work for me)

I would try to ascertain if individual MP3 files on your ipod are damaged. Does the same track always skip in the same place?

It could be an error associated with ripping a CD or a crap download from an illegal website.

You might show some Grace to people who are trying to help:  <img src="http://www.airplane.freeserve.co.uk/grace.gif" alt=" - " />

so slick is a derogatory term now eh?
well yes amnesiac  that is exactly what my ipod does...and oddly enough, i did do the ol' drop it on the concrete routine, and it worked for a couple weeks, now its back to its old tricks. and i appreciate your help, everyone.
its not just individual files, its every single thing, and im trying to avoid an apple store visit, because im guessing the repair price will be ridiculous like everything else in there.

This may not help at all... but if you return the iPod to apple to have the battery replaced, and your iPod isn't personalized, they basically send you a completely new iPod (i.e. they don't just replace the battery). That should solve any mechanical faults that you have too. Costs about $65 w/shipping, so it's not great - but you do kill two birds with one stone.

I had a similar issue this past November after less than a year.  Eventually it led to a complete harddrive crash, which was a bummer to say the least.  But because the warranty was still valid, Apple gave me a brand new iPod without any trouble at all.

Did you try reformatting it using the ipod updater?....it also flashes the os to the newest version and restores the drive to the state it was in when it was new.
