Gomez roll call
« on: August 18, 2004, 12:51:00 pm »
Anyone going, and anyone have a guess as to how sold out this baby might be....?  I haven't decided if I'm getting to this, going to Stiff Little Fingers, or saving my energy for the coming early Sept onslaught...  And there's Thursday (the day tomorrow, not the HFS band)!

 I'm guessing extra-sold out!    ;)

Hard to gauge that one really. The new record is getting such mixed reviews.

What's up with people? These guys are great live! We'll be there...assuming the Acela Express gets in on time.

This is what I keep hearing, from fairly jaded concert-goers, in particular...

personally i saw them a couple years ago and it was one of the biggest trainwrecks ever and this was before they became even a bigger jammish bandthey are now..  i couldn't detect a single hook, rythmic pattern or anything redeemable.  granted i was in bad mood because Beulah was the warmup act and turned out  horrid. I was so up for seeing them.  instead of the quirky pop of "when your heartstrings break" it was generic guitar rock.

back to gomez... they are one of those bands that beyond the second or third hypen it means they are trying to hard to be something they aint'  i.e. rock-folk-blues-electronic, and IMHO often sounds like a train wreck...

 AMG sez their style is:
 British Trad Rock
 Indie Rock
 Adult Alternative Pop/Rock
 Alternative Pop/Rock
 Britpop
 Experimental Rock

 and similar artists are:
 The Beta Band
 Blur
 Super Furry Animals
 Cornelius
 Arnold
 Pearl Jam
 Hefner
 Spiritualized
 The Delta 72
 Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

I wouldn't have said one of those.

there are others who will disagree and agree with me on this statement and i haven't seen them since 1999  so maybe their live performances have improved since then.  still not interested...

i am working this show tonight.

gomez are ok, IMO...not bad, but not that good, either. i agree with kozmo for the most part...gomez suffer severe identity crisis. i'm all for being diverse, but these guys tend to come off like they have no direction and no idea what they really want to be. some bands can pull off blending different subgenres of rock quite seemlessly, but gomez try a bit too hard.

i worked their show back in january and it was decent. nothing i'd go out of my way to see.

If it were not for the last album I would try and defend Gomez from the naysayers. But the last/current album is bobbins.

The other three albums are very fine and I think the fuse their different musical genres and influences very well and thankfully dont sound like anyone in-particular.

I have seen them four time and whilst they were all good shows the third time was the best. Probably because I really like in our gun and they didnt play any songs off of the current album.

I saw Gomez right after they released Get Myself Arrested as a single in Dingwalls in Camden Town.  It had to be around April in '98.  That was a great show mainly because I was really drunk, Beth Orton walked right by me, and it was Camden Town.  There is nothing like walking along the canal drunk at night.  They also played to about 40 people at TT The Bears that fall and it wasn't as good.  I was also part of the largest mass pogoing I have ever been a part of when I saw them at Glasto '99.  It was then, when I loooked around, that I realized they were for the kids.

Kosmo, I've read what your saying about that whole jam-band vibe (if not direct affiliation) a few different places, and hence have been kind of hesitant about this show.  I must say, I too take your opinion to heart on such matters, as you're a of a fairly like mind to me on music and have always steered me in the right direction.

 What about Stiff Little Fingers?!
