Either 9 or 10, depending. The bill was altered a bit this week, and we're not sure where the Postions or Canadian Invasion will end up playing.

OK, enough about the High Dials. How about Neko?!

I have one word for you: Jawdropping. As in, "The Neko Case concert was jawdroppingly good." I literally could not believe my ears how good it was. Really, it was one of the best shows I've seen at the 9:30 Club. Period. I've seen Neko perform with the New Pornographers and I have "Fox Confessor" and "The Tigers Have Spoken," but neither of those albums nor anything she's done with the New Pornos prepared me for how amazing Neko Case is solo and in person. I can't tell you how pleased I am that NPR recorded it and that I can download it for posterity's sake. I'm just crossing my fingers that the sound quality of the NPR recording does the show justice. Tonight's sound engineer should give a clinic or something, because this was one of the best sounding concerts at the 9:30 Club in a while. My hat's off to the DJ as well, who played some really good stuff in between the Martha Wainwright set and the Neko Case set. Speaking of Martha, she was really good too, I thought.

DITTO on everything you have stated! The live sound of this show and the quality of Neko's voice was unreal! This is what EVERY show should sound like at the club! No wonder they gave a shout out to their soundman at the end of the encores........he was fucking great!....Nice night for sure.....

according to the high dial lads, neko is a big fan of the band and asked them personally to go on tour with her.  they are sharing dates with Martha Wainwright and DC just happened to one of those shows.  because they were passing through DC anyways, have friends in the area, and enjoying playing here so they struck out on their own.  I'll bet that the fact that NPR was carrying the Neko show had alot to do with Martha doing that date with her..

The High Dials are one of those really great bands you want to keep to one's self along with the other 30 or so appreciative and enthusiastic fans last night.  However, you could feel DC9 straining to contain the bands vast talent and tremendous sound.  The High Dials should be playing to 900 more appreciative fans.  In recent memory they were one of the few bands that left me wanting more after the set ended.  I also would have liked a little more guitar and drums and less vocals.  But that's a trade off for getting to seeing a band like the High Dials in a small club who can't afford to take a soundperson on tour.  Someday they'll get to go tour with a proper sound person, not have to share their time with two other bands or stick to the mellow stuff for the sake of the artist they are supporting.

"A New Devotion" is a great album -- it's the only one I've got, so I can't speak to how it fits in their catalog, but I highly recommend it.  I wasn't dazzled when I saw them at Velvet a year or so ago...I feel I must have missed something.  Love the album, though.

hmmm tough call as both albums are very good... it's been awhile since listening to the first so it's not as fresh as the second one.  the second one is more glossy and pop then the first and i believe some fans of the first were a bit disappointed in the shift in sound.  two of my favorite songs of late are on the second.  so i'd go with the second and work backwards...

edit:  after reading bags comment, the first record will indeed appeal more to a power pop fan, it certainly grabbed my attention, and the bands influences are more obvious on it.  as the allmusic reviewer points the second represents the band developing their own sound, less power more "pop", more atomspheric and less psychedlic, etc.

Thanks for writing my review for me.

Extra bonus was the non-smoking status of the show. Wonder if it had anything to do with her throat problem?

I can't really add anything new to the comments already stated about Neko. I also agree no smoking also added greatly to enjoying the show. "Fox Confessor" is my favorite CD so far this year, and live the songs were even better.

I'm sorry I missed out on the Neko show.  High Dials were great as always.  I'm glad they like coming through DC, I hope they can keep moving up the food chain.

Both HD albums are good, but I would go with the latest one - War of the Wakening Phantoms.

I wish I had seen them - I really dig them. Alas, I'm a wuss and assumed it would be a late night start. Too bad, as they won't be back for a bit.

Agree with everything all others have already said.  Great show. Definitely worth being tired for at work today.  I'm glad I didn't miss it.  Both Martha and Neko were hanging out after the show.  They were really nice.

well as i mentioned to redsock last night, in attendence there was a very good turnout of 930 forumites and their ette's at the high dials show.   possibly 30 to 40% of those there.  the rest over at the Art Brut show...
