Dyke to open up BBC archive

Greg Dyke, director general of the BBC, has announced plans to give the public full access to all the corporation's programme archives.
Mr Dyke said on Sunday that everyone would in future be able to download BBC radio and TV programmes from the internet.

The service, the BBC Creative Archive, would be free and available to everyone, as long as they were not intending to use the material for commercial purposes, Mr Dyke added.

"The BBC probably has the best television library in the world," said Mr Dyke, who was speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

"Up until now this huge resource has remained locked up, inaccessible to the public because there hasn't been an effective mechanism for distribution.

"But the digital revolution and broadband are changing all that.

"For the first time there is an easy and affordable way of making this treasure trove of BBC content available to all."

He predicted that everyone would benefit from the online archive, from people accessing the internet at home, children and adults using public libraries, to students at school and university.

 Future focus

Mr Dyke appeared at the TV festival to give the Richard Dunn interview, one of the main events of the three-day industry event.

He said the new online service was part of the corporation's future, or "second phase", strategy for the development of digital technology.

Mr Dyke said he believed this second phase would see a shift of emphasis by broadcasters.

Their focus would move away from commercial considerations to providing "public value", he said.

"I believe that we are about to move into a second phase of the digital revolution, a phase which will be more about public than private value; about free, not pay services; about inclusivity, not exclusion.

"In particular, it will be about how public money can be combined with new digital technologies to transform everyone's lives."

Markie, did you do research on the best package to get?  I think I need to step up to the DSL plate myself.

verizon:

 1 month free
 2 months at $30
 $35 a month thereafter.

you have to have a verizon phone service already and I had to wait two weeks for them to set it up.

It was as cheaper than any other, plus if you cancel after less than a year all you have to do is send the modem back.  No fees. Crucial for me and my tenuous existance.

I had Verizon DSL a few months agao and it was worse than dial-up.  Ended up canceling and getting Cable Internet from Comcast the Devil.  Cable Internet is so much better than DSL in my experience.

It was just so slow and would not work half the time.  Tech support was helpful, I agree but they could never fix the problem.  Maybe I just had bad luck!

How long ago was this?

were you using USB or ethernet?

A google search for "verizon dsl sucks" gets lots of hits, most people are griping at the length of time set up took. Hardly anyone complains it wasnt good once it was up and running.

Broadband is the way to go! Especially if you use a lot of media rich sites or are online for fair amounts of time. It's not the cheapest but it ends up working out to being the cost of internet with an extra unlimited phone line, which an internet junkie would need anyway. I find it very worthwhile and the only way to go.

AMEN!!! I hate my Verizon DSL.  its crap and sometimes its slow and sometimes its not so slow. I can download stuff pretty quick, but its just general CRAP.  And i have to pay $35 a month, plus $15 a month for a phone line, cause i dont need one for a phone.  So Comcast is $10 cheaper and cable is way better than DSL...hopefully, i can get a cable modem in my neighborhood soon..

I think Verizon DSL only offers speed up to 768kbs for $34.99 a month. They do have a premium package that offers a download speed at 1.5mbps for $59.99.

Comcast on the other hand currently offers 1.5mbps at $42.95 a month. Comcast will also offer a 3.0mbps service early next year.

I've used Verizon DSL, Comcast, and Direct TV's internet services. If you can get it, internet cable is the cheapest and most reliable without a doubt.

i use earthlink dsl and have been happy, don't know the specs.  the problem with cable modems is that if you have several users in the same neighborhood on downloading naughty pics at the same time, the speed decreases.  i also don't like giving comcast anymore money...

I have verizon DSL...the service itself is pretty good, but like other's have said, set up is a bastard...and the help desk folk are usually about as knowledgable as I am at this techie stuff.
