Lollapalooza Music Fest Is Chicago Bound
By Chris Morris
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Lollapalooza -- a marquee touring festival of the 1990s that fell on commercial hard times last year -- is returning this year in drastically scaled-down form.
Lollapalooza '05 will run July 23-24 in Chicago's Grant Park. The band lineup will not be announced until the third week in April. The festival Web site (www.lollapalooza.com) will go live Friday.
Lollapalooza began life in 1991 as a major vehicle for the exposure of left-field rock talent. A highly successful summer touring proposition in the early '90s, it took a five-year hiatus from 1998-2002, as other treks like the Vans Warped Tour stepped in with similar concepts.
Grosses for Lollapalooza were uneven in 2003: The tour collected $13.7 million from 25 dates, according to Billboard Boxscore, and some dates were killed.
Last year, the festival's entire July-August run of two-day dates, with scheduled headliners including Morrissey, the Flaming Lips, the Pixies and Sonic Youth, was canceled because of poor ticket sales.
Some of the festival's founding participants are involved in this year's Windy City event.
William Morris Agency veteran Marc Geiger booked
Lollapalooza before leaving the agency to head the ill-fated Web-based label ArtistDirect; he returned to the agency in 2003, booked the '04 festival and is working on the Chicago shows. Jane's Addiction lead vocalist Perry Farrell also is on board in a creative capacity.
Capital Sports & Entertainment, the Austin firm that is partnered in the city's highly successful Austin City Limits Festival, will mount the Lollapalooza shows.
WMA declined comment on the '05 festival. A spokeswoman for Capital Sports & Entertainment did not return a call seeking comment.

Lollapalooza Returns!
Rob Kleckner reports:
Don't laugh: Lollapalooza is back. We all know what happened last year when nobody wanted to go to Lollapalooza-- they cancelled it. But, because the single-weekend megafests have been so successful the past few years, they're going to try and apply that tactic to Lollapalooza 2005, which will take place in Chicago's Grant Park on July 23 and 24. Considering the downtown location, it is highly unlikely that you'll be able to camp out at this festival. Billboard reports that the only confirmed acts thus far are Beck, the Killers, Kings of Leon, and Widespread Panic. This seems to take after Bonnaroo's half-jam, half-indie rock mentality.
Lollapalooza's website has been updated and simply says to come back on April 1, hopefully with more info and a more complete line-up. Given Lollapalooza's snafu last year, let's just hope a visit to the website on Friday doesn't say "April Fools!"

widespread panic at lol. i am lol, all over the place. what next, widespread opening up for interpol and the pixies? and here we thought warren haynes was the slut of rock.

lollapalooza.com is live now
it's being promoted by the ACL people.
all the same rules
recording devices allowed.
should be good food there too.
seems like it'll be a relaxed atmosphere like ACL.
both the sox and the cubs are in town around the festival too.
first on-sale = $35 2-day passes (and with a 2day pass you can come and go as you please)
i think i'm gonna gamble and go for it. no lineup announcement yet and i'm sure it won't be before the onsale.

I'm seriously considering going. $35 for two days is a great deal. With a group of friends, it could be a lot of fun. Any word on when they will announce the lineup? The site says there will be "after-show events around town."

If I were you, I'd consider going here.
May 26, 27, and 28 (http://www.primaverasound.com)
Good shows and great city. And now you have cheap direct flights there with a couple of US airlines.
Haven't seen the lineup for Lollapalooza though, if it's better than this other one, then forget my suggestion.

that doesn't look too bad. i would be interested in that but i couldn't afford a trip to that so soon and i also have no passport.

lineup i believe i read will be announced later this month.
in austin there were post-ACL shows (late evening and late night shows) by some ACL festival bands (and some non-festival bands)..
could be interesting.
i'm 95% sure i'm gonna take a chance on these tickets pre-lineup-announcement.

The Lollapalooza guessing game (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/custom/redeye/chi-050331lolla,1,423228.story?coll=chi-news-hed&ctrack=1&cset=true)
By Joshua Klein
Published March 31, 2005
Considering Lollapalooza's erratic track record and Chicago's general aversion to giant outdoor rock festivals, nothing is certain until the bands actually start playing.
A one-off event is even easier to cancel than an entire tour. But should a Grant Park Lollapalooza actually transpire, the possibility of snagging some choice acts is tantalizing. Free from a summerlong commitment, any number of high-profile bands would likely sign up. The question, then, is who would play.
So far the promoters aren't talking, but it's worth taking a guess who might appear.
Local luminaries with national draws like Wilco, Billy Corgan or even Kanye West--the latter two will have new albums to shill by summer--seem like obvious contenders, as is Coldplay or even Bjork.
Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips, intended for last summer's aborted Lollapalooza tour, could try again, as could rising indie sensations such as the Shins, Arcade Fire, Postal Service or Bright Eyes.
It's hard to imagine Chicago approving a day of ultra-aggressive music--sorry, Nine Inch Nails--but Radiohead's 2001 Grant Park performance proved that rock fans could be every bit as responsible as the crowds that came in for recent Grant rock concerts by Shania Twain and Sting.
Weezer would fit right in as a safe, fun but hardly raucous choice, as would Sleater-Kinney, Gorillaz or Foo Fighters. Saint Etienne would be a smart choice for the sacrificial cult British act given an early daylight slot.
And while we're at it, why not bring Radiohead back for a repeat performance?
Their summer 2001 Grant Park show was one of the most memorable events the city's ever hosted, and it went off without a hitch. They'll still be busy working on a new album by then, but the band has shown itself willing in the past to play a one-off festival or two to test out works in progress.
Or maybe bring back the Pixies. The alt-rock vets sold out five Aragon nights last winter. That's 20,000 people. What's another night or two?--joshua klein is a redeye special contributor.

hmm, I don't think I like that. Wasn't the initial purpose of Lollaplooza to be a traveling festival? It seems like they are trying to capitalize on the success of Bonnaroo, Coachella, and SXSW which turns me off. Not to mention I hate traveling. Although if the lineup is good enough I might consider going.

They tried travelling last year but nixed the whole thing due to low sales,so they ARE trying to cash in on the Bonaroo/Coachella type event.Better than not having it at all.

as long as they cancel it like, more than a week before the show.
Beck is rumoured so the show is sure to be doomed somehow.

i don't know if anyone else had any luck, but i got tickets.
they only put 2000 up at the $35 price.

i was refreshing the site occasionally since midnight (though i did sleep of course!)
then at around 12:30, there was a "buy now" link. i clicked on it but it said no tickets were available, then the event disappeared from the list, so i left the site and went back to the lollapalooza site.. it said it sold out in 80 minutes which i knew wasn't true since the link hadn't been up that long.. the buy tickets link was gone, but i found the site again... kept refreshing. eventually tickets popped up.
-
i forgot they went on sale....its on their frontpage, even a tickets link...sold out in 80 minutes.
-
i hit refresh all morning...left aroun 12:30 to grab a quick lunch...and now the GD tickets are gone. bullsh*t! it's probably an omen. i had tix for last year's doomed lolla tour and maybe i should just forget about this one altogether. what an unorganized mess anyway...tickets will go onsale "sometime" on the 7th?? nice for all of us 9 to 5ers that don't have time to sit around and watch the f*cking site all day long.

I was till I found this:
http://www.congresshotelstrike.info/index.asp (http://www.congresshotelstrike.info/index.asp)
Changed my mind real quick. Found a "private" hotel just a block up from there.
-
I booked a room at the Cass Hotel just in case I decide to go. I can always cancel it. What hotel did you find LRHippo? It's sounds closer than the Cass.
-
i have reservations at three hotels right now...the congress, the allegro and the hotel 71. congress is closest but i stayed there back in '97 and thought it was a bit of a shithole. problem is, the people i'm traveling with are on a shoestring budget. with this strike business, i think i may just spring for the extra $20/night and stay somewhere else. it's farther from grant park but...
-
ok. i'm absolutely disgusted after looking at that website. glad i didn't cancel my reservations at the other places. i will definitely NOT be staying at the congress. thanks for posting hippo.

hey, once they announce line-ups....and you decide which room to get...I may take one of those reservations of your hands.... keep me in mind (if they're all booked)

i'll definitely keep you in mind...with the exception of the congress, i don't plan to cancel any reservations until next week. isn't the line-up supposed to be announced on Friday of this week? i got a really good rate on both ($169/nt at the allegro and $170/nt at the hotel 71, two beds in each room), but i'm leaning towards hotel 71 because it's a bit closer.
-
We'll be at the Club Quaters Central Loop. Turns out it's not as close as I was lead to believe by my better half. It's at W Adams and S Clark. A few blocks away, but still in walking distance to the park.
I was also off on the price, $129/night. Their site says it's a private hotel and you must be a member, but I got the reservation through Orbitz. A few more rules to follow with Orbitz, but it's booked and reasonably priced for the area.

don't blame you. we just jumped on it because it's an excuse to go to chicago. figured that we could leave the show for a few hours and enjoy the city if we're not into the bands that are playing.

the sucky thing here is that, missing out on that pre-sale is going to cost me. I imagine tickets for both days to be over $100 a piece.
probably i will just hope it goes well so i can go next year :)

i heard they would be about $75/day...i guess it's pretty expensive when you figure in the cost of lodging, food and drink for a weekend in chicago.
-
Tickets right now are $85 for a two day pass. On sale right now for those that get the email (i can give you the link if you really want it) and will be on sale to the public tomorrow.
Also, lineup should be announced shortly after 10:00 am chicago time.
That is all...

Let me add, that with a $9 service fee, and a $7 shipping charge, you are looking at a $101 total

ouch. is that for both days? if not, i'm really lucky to have gotten in on the $35 deal.
i know there's only an hour or so til the announcement of bands but it feels like christmas morning. for me, going to lolla this year is just going to be a lame substitute for coachella UNLESS they can floor me with an amazing lineup. otherwise, i would much rather be flying to cali next weekend.
my thoughts on the lineup so far...
dino jr (+++)
weezer (+1/2)
pixies (++) (they would get 3+s but i've seen 'em)
the killers (--)
liz phair (--)

it's not that way for me.
the lineup for coachella this year is nowhere near as good as the lineup was last year. i contemplated going, but it just wasn't worth it to me. lollapalooza is going to be much more fun for the money and it's not going to be 100+ degrees in chicago.
-
$101 is for one (1) 2 day pass. Also glad we got 2 $35 tickets that came out to be less than the face value of 1 of the tickets now.
30ish minutes and counting! :D

i absolutely agree that this year's coachella lineup pales in comparison to 2004...i mean, the cocteau twins?? may as well have booked enya while they're at it.
bauhaus is really the only band i'm bummed about. i'm hoping against hope that they're on lolla too. i was sad to see that peter murphy was coming to the 9:30 by himself. anyway...the e-mail sent yesterday said "diverse load of talent that will bust your mind with some indie stars, classic icons, a reunion or two, mash up, and more". obviously dino jr. counts as a big reunion. maybe bauhaus will be #2.

i do remember hearing that...wasn't it the whiny, yelping lead singer that said she couldn't do the show? did they replace them with anyone else...i don't even go to the coachella site anymore because it will just make me sad.

the cass sucks. sure, it's a few blocks off michigan ave, but it's a terrible hotel. stayed there once, and the window in the room was broken, and they wouldn't move us to another room, and wouldn't fix the window.

the tickets get more expensive as they announce more bands? I dont know, these 37 arent going to get me to Chicago, i dont think.
-
No, didn't know I need to explain more. A lot of festivals are actually doing this now. They have an alotment of tickets at $85, once those sell out they go to $100, etc. Has nothing to do with bands being announced. The $85 could be sold out now for all we know.

all i needed to see was the dandy warhols! this just made my day a bit better, and my wallet a bit lighter. luckily ive got a cousin in chicago and a free place to stay! this just got even better! :D

so that makes 42...wonder when, or if, we'll ever get another 18+ to make over 60 as they promised. funny how it started out at 70+ bands and now has dwindled to 60+. they better get their shit together and confirm some more bands soon.

Calm down folks, it's still early. Hell other festivals that take place in 1 month haven't completly announced their acts yet. Lolla is still 3 months away. I didn't see anyone freak out about Coachella when a few bands dropped out. It happens.

Could you be a bit more specific about "bad feeling?"
Have you had visions of death and destruction....toppling speaker towers....a tornado in Grant Park....an outbreak of Legionnaires Disease....don't eat the brown acid....

i dont know yet.
i just feel like sometime between now and july 25 i will be sayin "glad i decided not to go"
no envisioned death, though.

in fact, i do remember biting nails before coachella last year. first wilco dropped out. then thom yorke cancelled the australia shows just before coachella due to strained vocal cords. i was pretty nervous, yes, because i had already paid for plane tix. ditto for lollapalooza although there isn't quite so much invested yet. at least my hotel room isn't paid in full.
anyway, coachella's lineup is announced in early to mid-february for a late april show (2 1/2 to 3 months in advance by my count). beyond a couple of minor dropouts and/or additions, the coachella lineup is usually pretty much the same when the event comes around. lollapalooza's announcements have been sketchy to say the least and the number of promised acts has dropped by 10 since i bought my "souvenir" ticket. yes, i'm nervous.
-
i'm going. i don't care.
for me it's an excuse to hit chicago up again.
i got in on the $35 2-day passes so i have no regrets whatsoever. as long as there's at least 2 bands per day that i want to see, i will view it as worth the $17.50 per day.
-
Even if the anticipated number of acts has dropped below 70 as first stated, at 60 bands, you're paying $.58/band. Shit, you aren't going to pay that anywhere. I know you won't see all 60 bands, but still. And we don't know why the Dandy's have dropped. Endless number of reasons.
I just need to get airline tickets and I am set. Hotel is paid for, as I am sure prices will get jacked up for that weekend. If nothing else, my wife and I will have a nice weekend in Chicago.

the dandy's dropped out cause they know BJM will blow them off the stage...
-
I bought $35 tickets anticipating a certain native Chicago artist playing. As it stands, the lineup is great at $35, but I wouldn't pay $100 or whatever it costs now.
-
There you have it, the Dandy's are scared! :D
And yeah, it's a lot easier to justify when you paid $35 instead of the $85/$100/$115.
Anyway. I'm pumped about the show and will make it a fabulous weekend. Anyone hear of any "after show" shows in the Chicago area?

i've been checking around about late-night shows. will post when i hear of any. i'm sure the city will be hopping that weekend.
don't get me wrong...i'm still excited about the weekend in chi-town, and i'm glad i only paid $35 for tix. however, with ticket prices at $100+ now, i'm just hoping enough other people think it's worth it. otherwise, it'll end up getting cancelled like last year.

As long as he's alive in our hearts, Sonick, he's never really dead!!

Take it for whatever you feel it's worth, but this is a reply I got back from the Dandy's:
From: sean gothman:
Our band was never in the line-up, the first we even heard about it
is when fans were telling us that we were. I would look into this
shady Lollapalooza organization if I were you.
-
BJM confirms they signed a contract to play...my husband just got a response from anton this morning. maybe the dandy's are lying out their ass. it seems absurd that a group like capital sports and entertainment would risk their rep by putting unsigned bands in the big announcements of lolla lineups.
anyway, how could the dandy's not have known except for fans telling them that they were on the lineup?? i mean, the press releases were everywhere and bloggers were touting the DW vs BJM showdown for the past couple of weeks since the announcement. oh, well...my husband's a fan but i won't really miss them.
-
as to where the dandys will be.. well sadly not at lollapalooza.. which ticks me off as its my fav. band. so, according to a dandys site guess they'll be in france. it figures, theyre usually in europe before/after/during a new album.
Hi lucky people we are!!
The DW are on the program of the "vieilles charrues" festival in Britany, they
are on the opening day Friday 22 of July!!!!!
I had program to be there without knowing it I'll be there! Lucky girl!!
-
Will they be serving refreshing, frost brewed Coors Light at the show?
-
ben kweller just added to the lineup...

Mr. Courtney was walking around one day, minding his own business, when up comes Mr. Perry Ferrell. Says Mr. Perry to Mr. Courtney,"Hey, Mr. Courtney, you should play at my show." To which Courtney replied, "What?" Then Mr. Perry repeated his plea, "Hey, Mr.Courtney, you should play at my show." To which Courtney replied, "What?" Courtney was about to go back to minding his own business when Mr. Perry scooped up a handful of pebbles and leapt to a nearby spinning wheel. Well, Mr. Perry spun and he spun! Whirrrr! Whirrr!! He spun for about ten minutes until he fashioned those pebbles into a solid gold hearing-aid. After handing the device to Courtney, Mr.

Courtney replied "Ohhhh. Okay."

They've known they were playing for a while now.Gotta love the marketing machine AND Courtney's business savvy.Got it down to a fine art!Much needed boost in Lolla ticket sales I'd bet.If this convinces anyone to get tix who haven't yet,I'd get them soon or they'll cost ya an extra 15 bucks.

gotta love courtney. although plenty of rumours did have it they would be in france and then switzerland (or some other european country) on that same date playing other festivals. considering how much in the past the dandys have played european festivals, it wouldnt have been that unrealistic to assume they could possibly be in europe during lolla.

daddy a go go and the candy band? thats a joke right? is kidz bop playing too?
Hard Fi is a fucking great band though.
and DJ Muggs Mashup Circus? what is he, insane in the brain? how stupid.

wtf? a bunch of kids acts?? i'm so annoyed right now at the stagnant lineup. still haven't gotten my "souvenir" tickets although they were supposed to go out within 6-8 weeks of the presale. they better get their shit together, and soon, or i'll be one of the disatisfied people returning my tickets to frontgate. we were promised 70+ bands...didn't think 5 of those would be geared towards children.

I'm with you. How the hell can people stress that -- OHMIGOD -- there might only be 50 bands!!! Still means there are 25 you won't see (instead of 35 you won't see...).
If you're talking several of the marguee bands, that's one thing, but simply worrying about the number of bands based on a desire of the promoters to book 70...get real.
-
are we really going to start the quantity over quality arguement again?
58 cents a bad, BFD. if they suck then i dont care if it was 1 cent a band.
and do these 58 cents include travelling and lodging and many beers to have to sit through Daddy A Go Go? (who definitely arent worth 58 cents)

I'd never get in to this argument, but you can't physically see 70 bands anyway. If it were suddenly 20, after being promised 70, then I'd bitch. If the lineup has bands you like, that's what matters. Now, the last list of additions was incredibly weak, I'll give you that.
-
uh don't you think those kid bands will be on a seperate stage setup for the younger set which might actually become ticket holders because their parents will be taking them along for thier first rock n' roll concert experience... sounds like some creative scheduling to me, they could have booked a bunch of marginal local acts for the sidestages..
-
ok correction kids under 10 get in for free... so adding a kids stage wont increase ticket sales, it might however bring in more families which will boost food sales etc,
it would appear the promoters are making an attempt a family friendly event with the tag-a-kid program.
-
smart Kosmo,
doesnt Glastonbury have a kids stage of some sort?
-
yup it's called kidz field and briefly skimming the info on it, it looks very well organized...
-
in my defense, i was really hoping for some bigger acts to be added, in particular some chicago talent (e.g., billy corgan, wilco, etc.), not a bunch of kids acts. furthermore, i don't expect to see all 70 bands but the less bands, the less variety in music offered. personally, i'd rather be heading to the intonation festival the week prior. i'm into ~90% of the bands playing vs. ~40% and would have a chance to see nearly all of them by the looks of the timing.

I think you may be too late for that. You had 30 days to get a refund on your tickets, from date of purchase. And if you got presale, that was back around April 7th.
And someone else mentioned something about not getting their tickets yet. So far I am not impressed with Frontgate. The Modest Mouse show at DAR was a frontgate deal and haven't gotten those tickets yet. Show is in 3 weeks.

if i recall correctly, the small print on the presale was "within 30 days of receipt of tickets" but maybe i'm totally wrong...
-
I used front gate for Modest Mouse in Philly and got my tickets last week.
-
Good point. I still think it's from the time of sale, but you may be right as well. I took a screen shot of that page a while back, just to help me out if they gave me grief if I had to refund the tickets, but I got rid of it as I have no plans of backing out anymore.
Last week on the Mouse tickets eh? I wait another week or so, then get back on the horn with them. I've already called them a few times for other shows.

FYI, this is from the Lolla tickets page for the non pre-sale tickets purchased:
"Tickets will be delivered via Fedex Ground between July 1 and July 15."
And I don't understand all the complaining about the number of bands. There are about 16 I want to see, and those alone are worth my trip. Hell, I'd go to that fest just to see The Dandy Warhols, Arcade Fire or Hard-Fi. I'm looking forward to it! It will be a fun weekend away where I can hang out with friends and hear good music. Let's hope they get their permits. And if they don't, they'll refund the tickets.

Honestly the delta variant is changing lots of things, but we’ll see… still would like to attend the Durand Jones show in September
And this d@ygl0w band are horrible… the “singer” among other things ran head first into his mic

Nice to hear some new songs from the Black Pumas… they are also rocking a bit more, great backup singers
And the bass player in Jimmy Eat World has some serious COVID hair, well past his shoulders..

If vaccinated people can spread the virus, the new game is we go back to wearing masks.*
As long as the vaccination continues to vastly reduce the number of people who get it in the first place, and vastly reduce hospitalization and death in the vaccinated who do get it, I think re-masking is about as far as they should take it. Though i don't think it's feasible to tell society to mask forever.

Four members of Frumious Bandersnatch (Bobby Winkelman, Jack King, Ross Valory, and David Denny) became regular members of the Steve Miller Band Valory, along with fellow Frumious Bandersnatch member George Tickner and manager Herbie Herbert, joined former Santana members Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie to form the band Journey in 1973.

in case anyone thought that number was realz: daily attendance at Lolla was around 100K. so if every single person at the festival was at her show (which wasn't the case), she's be 80K short of her "estimate."

was a fun time. really only saw the foos, the modest mouse, and parts of brittany howard, front bottoms, band of horses, ottto. basically, the plan was to see foos and mouses, and we kept to that plan. saw a full brittany howard set at thalia hall on saturday night/sunday morning, and that was pretty great. was a masked event. we mostly were able to keep a distance from others. used a lot of hand sanitizer. lolla logistics were really well done. easy in and out, plentiful bathroom facilities, food vendors, water, merch. air travel was pretty easy. ubers were expensive. chicago weather was perfect. Fun record stores in Wicker Park yesterday. Got to hang with a friend I hadn't seen in a couple of years, and that was a good reconnect.
I am fully vaxxed, but got tested before the trip, and I will likely test again later this week before re-engaging with society.

I'm sure they are not, but would imagine they could follow up with a statically accurate population of the attendees and see the rate of infections?
(how many people would you need to get a good result if 100k attend?)

This will be the test case of whether the Delta variant has made requiring vaccination status obsolete. In some ways, we should be grateful to all of these unwitting test subjects

Yep, a fun time. Weather pretty much extraordinary and I could venture to say that Friday was the coldest Lollapalooza Chicago day ever.
I woulda liked a bit more of a challenging health screening as any counterfeit vaxx paper would probably work. And I woulda liked some more mask wearing, at least in the thick of the sets.
Foos an obvious highlight, even with needing to do Southwest checkin precisely in middle of set. (B19.... acceptable) Also: Orville Peck, Black Pumas, Jawny, Black Pistol Fire, Tai Verdes, Miley C.
No Perry sightings for me but Kind Orchestra got added into a club show somewhere.

So if Lollapalooza didn’t end up being a superspreader event, does that make one a science denier? Asking for a friend…
NEW: Officials have found no evidence of a superspreader event stemming from the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, city health commissioner says.

Officials say Lollapalooza wasn’t a super-spreader event, but some fans have reported symptoms after attending. "People need to realize that getting vaccinated doesn't make you invincible," says one.
