Wow! And of course Ticketmaster wants their piece of it... Remind me, what is it they do to charge a higher service charge for a higher priced ticket? The service charge is more expensive than many show tickets...
I know many here feel the same way. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I devoted an entire Facebook status to this topic yesterday. My conclusion is that I'll probably end up lurking around the Warner that night.

Attempting an assassination, I pray.

All the security is going to be following "the other guy" that weekend. As long as he's not attending the show you may well get a clear shot ;-)
-
I mean, I just saw something saying the first 2-3 rows are 1000/each, face value. Is this for charity or something?
I love Jay-Z more than just about any other mainstream rap artist (I'm from Brooklyn, comes with the address.), but the only people I know that command upwards of $500 a pop are Elton John, Prince at the Hamptons, Billy Joel, and Barbara Streisand. Jay-Z? Seriously?
-
Yep - there's got to be some backlash at some point. Here's hoping the place won't be half full...
I'm still wondering where Ticketmaster gets off charging more for the higher-priced ticket. It's the same service by them, no matter how expensive the ticket. They're the biggest scalpers out there...

It's gonna sell out. I just hate that the ticket price alienates a large percentage of his fanbase. I mean, whats the alternative? Buy the fucking DVD? Even Madonna's ass has $75 tickets. What gives?

are you trying to say that black people can't afford that much, and only white corps. will be there with their yo yo yo kids. how racist. ;D

Tickets for Madonna's ass sell for $75? I think I'd want to be at the front of the line and not the end ;)

I dont think you want to be in that line at all, actually!

But when do Elton John, Billy Joel, Streisand, etc. play venues as small as the Warner? I mean u2 charges almost $200 apiece for seated stadium ticket at 50,000 capacity arenas. They'd probably charge $1,000 apiece for such a small show.
Plus, you're virtually guaranteed appearances by Beyonce and Pharell.
-
p.s. it looks like scalpers already have a hold of the first several rows and already have them on craigslist even though TM on-sale starts on Friday morning...this just goes out to the people who think that the Warner is no longer still funneling tickets directly to scalpers...
-

Let 'em. Do you think they're going to get anything above $1,000? You'll see those same seats on Craig's List and/or eBay for less than face value the day before the show.

Ummmm - yeah, you're probably right about that. Regardless, it's gonna be better to be in the front of the line than the back :D

that is incorrect, on the whole.

*sigh*... it's called a "presale", myra. it's on right now (http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/1500419D8EFE9FFE). with an easily obtained password, you can buy tickets before the "general onsale" just like scalpers. you should try it some time, when not busy dreaming up conspiracies.

Really? Because I distinctly recall paying upwards of $160 a ticket for seats to see them in Hawaii at a giant stadium (direct from ticketmaster, not a scalper). Maybe I'm too busy dreaming up conspiracies...
-
Well, the arena tours they've been doing have not been in 50,000 seat stadiums. Each of these arenas holds 20,00 - give or take a couple.
Also, only a segment of the reserved seats cost $150 or so. You can get into the show for about $60, including the general admission floor seats.
-
Aloha Stadium's capacity is 50,000
and still, this is way beside the point - $500 really isn't that terrible for such a small venue. Just because you can't afford it or can't justify spending the money doesn't mean that it's insanely out of line with what big artists can charge. It's not like it's Katy Perry or some BS like that. It's Jay-Z, and you know it will be more than just Jay-Z, and the capacity is 1,800! Verizon is what? just over 20,000? And people still pay about $200 for floor seats for big shows there.
-
Even Morrissey is only charging $75 on his new tour and I thought that was expensive.
I guess 40/40 club didn't pan out so well for Jay-Z.
-

Please. I'd pay at least $100 just to see Jay-Z kick Morrissey's ass.
-
As expensive as this is, you have to consider that Jay-Z is pretty much top of the line when it comes to rap stars. And he really doesn't do too many concerts. And it is a comparatively small venue.
That being said, I think if this wasn't an "inauguration" concert, tickets would be significantly less expensive.

or the fact the genre is dead, replaced by grunge.two, and he better grab all the cheddar while possible.

Seconded. Or at least a duet.
I'm going to this expensive ass show. Meh, call it what you want.

does jigga actually play a good show? i never thought rappers could do it. when i saw the infamous phish brooklyn show, that jay came out on, i thought he stopped the show cold and majorly sucked much asshole.
-
Saw him in April at the Verizon Center and yes, he tore it the fuck up. It was pretty great to be in that space for those four hours.
-
there are $100 tickets ...just saw it on the ticketmaster page...
-
So, they added $100 seats? That's a bit more like it... Of course, if it's anything like the Eagles cheapies at Verizon (last few rows of the worst upper levels) it's still a bit shy of generous. I'm gonna have to post at least a minor retraction on the blog I suppose...

OK, so Aloha Stadium holds 50,000 -- but at the risk of nit-picking, your post talked about their tour in general, and for the last few tours, they've played 20,000 seat arenas, and not stadiums.
I'm probably never going to feel that even a small venue like the Warner constitutes such a price range -- even The Rolling Stones didn't charge anything of this sort when they played Tower Theatre on their last tour, or Bruce. And Jay-Z is NOT the Stones or Bruce. Although, it seems he has their egos times two

unless you're made to stand in the lobby, $100 for jay z at the warner is pretty damn decent.
-
upper balcony is $100. i just pulled some on the side. $14 service charge...
my suggestion is to buy the $100 ticket, then move to the $500 seats if those don't sell out :P

It's a shame that in this day and age that may well be true. I'm not going to date myself - but I've paid far, far less for far better acts back in the day. In today's landscape though, $100 isn't the worst news - you're right. However $375-$1,000 is still highway robbery, in my opinion - that I believe is shared by many (I could be wrong).

Jay Z is doing the same inauguration day/week mark up others are doing. Wont eateries and other businesses be charging more during this time? I do think it is a bit much though, but if someone really wants to see him that bad, then more power to him. There isnt a single artist i would pay anywhere close to that for. Maybe a week long festival, but definitely not a single artist show, Jay Z or other.

Eateries, bars etc will just be staying open later. Raising prices isn't usually an issue. I've been to two Super Bowls, and the price of a meal was the same in either host city as at home. They generally just appreciate the increase in business.
I'm not sure EVERYONE is marking themselves up for inauguration. Moby is charging $35 at the club.

Tickets purchased. Can we now turn this into the Jay-Z rollcall thread?

people are willing to pay 500
supply and demand supply and demand..

works for me! i bought a single "cheap" seat-- it's my bday week!
-
I was tempted to buy, but I have not enjoyed a rap show in my life except for the Coup. And Jay-Z ain't no Coup...
-
C'mon, Joe! Come see Jay-Z!

You know I'll be there ;) cheap seats totally worth it. Jay-Z will bring it.
-
Didn't he play the e-factory or sonar for $100-150 last year or the year before?
E-Fact is comparable to Warner in capacity and Sonar holds much less than Warner.

Speaking of Jay-Z and duets, you know what I always thought would've been a badass/awesomely awkward duet? A live mash-up of sorts of "Big Pimpin'"/Abdel Halim Hafez's "Khosara" (song Jay-Z sampled for that track) (http://www.imeem.com/nile3k/music/OfcUUfDW/abdel_halim_hafez_khosara/) if Hafez were still alive.
They could've done an alternating of verses.

Can someone please PM me a JAY-Z presale password?? THANKS!!

He doesn't do too many concerts? He was just here this past summer right after tying the knot with Beyonce...
As I mentioned on someone's status yesterday, it wouldn't surprise me tickets are so expensive. For the last tour that stopped at Verizon, it was costing Jay-Z over $150,000 A DAY to run, that didn't include Mary J. Blige's side. Jay-Z had 14 tour buses and about 40 people in his "entourage" that did absolutely nothing at all other than catch a free ride and stay in the posh hotels will the crew and tour bus drivers got the HoJo or whatever out on New Ave with the hookers...

LOVE that 99 Problems/Buddy Holly mix.

So this was awesome.
But I'll defer to the Washington Post:

Thirded. I ended up seathopping into the Orchestra ($500/ticket land) and whoa, he gave 3000%. I also LOVED that we got his live verse on that "My President is Black" song, and that he basically did a greatest-hits show. Only thing missing really was "Hola Hovito", "Feelin It", and "Change Clothes".
Also, yes to Beyonce, double yes to Mary J Blige!
And according to the written setlist, he was expecting Nas and John Legend to come out as well. Wow.
-
wow beyonce. what's next, throwing your cell phone at your assistant, or being afraid of dolphins?

who is this guy? when i met him at a show and talked some, he seemed like the most outgoing, nicest, full of over energy person that i have ever met. a real social parade! but he said that his dj-ing was doing "ok" and not really many gigs. now he touring with u2, inspiring tom waits, and rubbing elbows with jay z??? very interesting.
-
Doesn't he also sell coke at the Rock and Roll Hotel?

uh, that's pretty much thedirector in a nutshell. time spent with him has a funny way of turning in to a good story. he's bombastic but he can back it up. he also has a killer collection of shades.
but he said that his dj-ing was doing "ok" and not really many gigs. now he touring with u2, inspiring tom waits, and rubbing elbows with jay z??? very interesting.
a crazy story indeed. best part was snubbing lars ulrich so he could continue chatting with waits :D
-
plus the only person i have ever met, who buys three beers at a show at once: one in each hand, and one in his mouth where he tilts his head back to drink it.
-

I've never seen him do this, but it doesn't surprise me in the least. The Director needs to return to us.
-
maybe it's cause i'm a total introvert (and weird), but i'd be terrified to go backstage!! sounds like TheDirector has plenty of good stories though, and any man who "triple fists" is cool in my book.... i'd pay to see that move. where's the petition so we can get him back here as a contributing boardie?
about this show again....
i was in the upper balcony sitting patiently when mayor fenty rolled in with his entourage just after 9. he got an okay reaction from the crowd. it was funny to see people trip over themselves just for a photo op. more than anything, i was impressed that he stayed the duration of the show!
i've grown tired of mary j blige over the last several years, but she added something special to the show. and hearing "real love" live for the first time since she opened for jodeci at constitution hall back in 93 (?) was sweet!
