i figured we'd stop cloggin the JA thread and make it its own.
i was very excited about the JA/NIN show but i figured this was more of an "occasion" and i am a sucker for that sort of stuff.
what time are people thinking of getting there? I am aiming for 5:30 but feels thats gonna be prrrretty late.
-
I won't be able to get there until late, but I'm in!
-
i am working on finding out their "real" approximate starting time....i doubt it will be 8pm
-
I'm just going to run home after work, change and head up there. I don't see me getting there until 7:00 or so.
Is there an opener?

I was thinking that, too. Not with 7:00 doors and an all-will-call show.
-
NIN/JA would have been cool but I agree friends+BB>NIN
5:30 is starting to sound way early! maybe you can spend your time breakdancing outside. ;)
The BBshow at 930 was a little chaotic but despite the late arrival of BB it ran pretty smoothly. Well, it was smooth once someone yelled at everyone and told them what to do...but I think it took less than an hour to check people in...
I hope the powers that be start the show at least before or at nine o'clock -- pretty please??
No offense, I'm hoping there is no opener.
I'm sporting a cold/sinus infection and with the long drive in the rain I just want to go back to bed. Thank you.

those days are over for me, dear. maybe you should bring a folding chair so you dont have to stand in line for so long!!

A bunch of 35 year old white people standing around (or worse, dancing) to 45 year old white Jewish guys rapping. Should be quite a scene. Maybe MC Serch will cameo?

35? whoa there buddy.
you're such a piece of shit, you know that. its like, just cause you're a dorky loser, you think everyone is as bad as you.

It's OK Sonick. Rhett has to resign himself to the fact that's he's married with a kid now and therefore "old" and can't get away with doing certain things because he doesn't have the freedom that some of us have. We can stay out late on a school night enjoying the music and antics (and sure, it's the music of our youth) instead of listening to a crying baby with a loaded diaper. But you know what? We all make choices, and I think it's amusing how some people are all sour grapes about it. If Rhett chooses to put negativity out there, that's his choice. I don't have time for it.

Nah, it's gonna be fun, Rhett. I streamed their new stuff (they do have a new album coming out, yo) and I still like them. Besides, I already have my chair & umbrella for the wait and my walker for the show. ;)
-
ok, scoop is this....
doors are at 7pm. show will commence when "everyone is in the venue" This should be anywhere between 8pm-9pm. (i hope!)
opener plays then Beastie Boys. Show will last 2 1/2 hours from time opener goes on
so sounds like opener has 30 minutes, then 30 minute break then 90 minute set?
should be over by 11:30 at the latest though.
-
So...who is this opener?
-
oh and tee, your question about cameras?
no. no cameras at all none. zero.
-
I actually have tickets to Phoenix, Wilco, M. Ward, and Fleet Foxes...all on school nights, and before going out, I get the pleasure of the company of a toddler who rarely cries, poops her diaper no more than once a day, andhugs me and tells me how much she missed me when i walk through the door.
What a life! Yes, I have a wonderful wife.

so wonderful, you spend countless hours judging other peoples. i'm no psychiatrist but...

Did I miss something? Who did I "judge"?

nevermind rhett. nevermind.

Nice Nirvana reference, bro.
In all fairness, I was part of a David Byrne crowd Saturday at Wolftrap that was a huge old dorky dancing white people scene.
nevermind rhett. nevermind.

Time to put everything we learned in kindergarten into practice. (i.e., I really hope it starts on time 8 pm!)

dag.
oh and rhett, I was going to say that - how is old people dancing a show any different than the ones we attend? ;)

I just have a gripe that a) he included me into some 35 year old bunch in which i have several years before i reach. and b) that just because he looks like an idiot dancing, he assumes everyone else does. (sorry, i take my footwork skills seriously!)

So what's the odds that it's the Beasties opening for themselves? They've done that before, haven't they?

Setlist:
Root Down
Skills to Pay the Bills
Sure Shot
Alright Hear This
No Sleep Til Brooklyn (hilarious how they messed up the beginning)
Shake Your Rump
Egg Raid on Mojo
Biz vs the Nuge (w/Biz Markie doing the actual vocal)
Time For Living
Sabrosa
B-For My Name
Lee Majors
Remote Control
Body Movin'
B-Boys in the Cut
Flute Loop
Pass the Mic
Right Now
Ch-Ch-Check It Out
Ricky's Theme
Lighten Up
Off the Grid
Something's Gotta Give
Benny & the Jets (w/Biz Markie...one of the highlights of the night and I don't even like that song)
Tough Guy
So Whatcha Want
--------------------
Heart Attack Man
3 MC's and 1 DJ
Intergalactic
Sabotage (insane mosh pit during this one)
All in all good, sloppy mistake-laden set. I really wasn't sure what they'd do, but it was a huge variety of old, new, punk, rap, instrumental stuff. Not the concert of the year or anything, but still a fun time and a great show on a random Tuesday night. Very happy that I got to see this. For every 3 posers there was one totally cool person, lots of aging frat boys as you'd expect, and LOTS of girls dragged by boyfriends/husbands. That being said, it seemed like everyone was having a good time.

Sun review (http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/midnight_sun/blog/2009/06/last_nights_beastie_boys_show.html)

OK, so i am not the biggest Beastie fan out there and have already seen several lackluster shows from them so my expectation werent the highest.
When we saw the setlist, i was disappointed that only No Sleep was on it from License To Ill. After they played it, though, i was glad they are scrapping that old stuff cause they cant really pull it off anymore. They were much more tight and solid on their newer and instrument-driven songs. problem was, the crowd wasnt really interested in hearing that stuff. So, when they sounded average, the crowd was going crazy, when they sounded their best, the crowd was bored.
Either way it was super fun and I was with a couple Beastie Boys virgins who finally got to see them. Also, the venue did a remarkable job and getting people in and stuff, despite my overpreparation, things went smooth (sorry miss sugartastic lady!)
I give it an A-
Jane's and NIN was probably a better show, but this one was much more memorable, if that makes sense.
-
It was fun. Pretty much agree with all sonick and the review stated.
(I was curious what was up w/ MCA as well - by mid-show, I figured he was just having a nic fit or something by the way he chomped his gum and a ready to "move on" vibe)
No worries, sonick - everything timed out perfectly - thanks for planning. We had hardly a wait and found a great spot - minus the fat head and beer slinging ladies. ;)
RHL did a great job. Yet, someone needs to light those two steps next to the soundboard, and put up some netting on the rails. I was conked on the head twice by cups. (I also saw a few on the main toss their cups behind them?!) Oh, and was that beer or condensation dripping on us all night?
I do think I'm a bit old for the crowd antics but it was a fun occasion and a band I've always wanted to see. Thanks for bringing them back!
Oh, and anyone regretting they didn't go b/c Biz Markie was on the bill - do not be. It was awful painful, like some crazy scene from "Arrested Development". I didn't know if someone should go up and help him or this is how his shows always were? I would have much rather he let the songs run or a DJ play a set. He did all right the two minutes he was on stage w/ BB though.
-
I once saw Biz Markie sing the national anthem at a demolition derby in upstate New York. True story.
-
Did he sing the entire anthem or just one verse?
-
He sang it twice, straight through. All while doing a one armed handstand. True story.
