Got home a while ago.. Just loved it... Jack White is the man and these guys rock out.. Heavier live than on album.. The guitarist is pretty phenomenal (Dean F) and the lead singer has some real stage presence...
The downside is for $35 we got an hour if that...They really should have charged $25 or had a marquee opener for that kind of time...
Jack White came out and played guitar on one song (I think just one) and the neanderthals went nuts when Dean had been playing amazing all night...There was definitely an effort to understate Jack White .. he was back behind a drum kit (sideways) but from the left side was kind of covered by the guitarist (good show to see from right side facing stage)....The lighting for almost entire show was very dark ..
They left stage after only 45 minutes! Then came back out and I think did two songs finishing up with a raucous New Pony (Dylan song they cover on album).. To hear a cover of a song from Street Legal is pretty cool but then again its right out of the Jack White playbook (with Stripes he did One more cup of coffee from another underplayed Dylan album: Desire)..of course its on the LP
Jack White- and now I've seen him with the Stripes, Raconteurs and Dead Weather - always puts on a great kickass rock show..
Hopefully they'll play a bit longer for the rest of you fortunate enough to see them tomorrow night.. Oh yeah they went on right about 9:30... we were home by 11 and I stopped by the merch table so that gives you an idea..some nice Dead Weather posters specially made for venue.. Some Dead Weather 45s.. Third Man Records shirts..lots of nice schwag
some other pieces of hopefully helpful information:
as predicted lots of extras out front being held by people with pained expressions...scalpers took a bath on this one..YAY!!!!!
a good number of people seemed to arrive late.. i guess they figured the show would not start til 10.. they figured wrong and they missed a good chunk.. let that be a lesson to you boys and girls to check the 930 website for showtimes...
-
Yeah, everything you said re: the show was spot on.
The people nearly being brought to orgasm as Jack White switched to guitar were funny.
And while yes, it was a pretty good show, it was so not worth $35.
I enjoyed the opener, too.
-
i love to say "i told you so", so here goes: i told you so.
-
the opening band was fantastic. get there early if you are going to the show tomorrow. you will not be disappointed.

Re: Posters..
Being that Jack White's involved, it's most likely a Rob Jones poster, which likely means it's pretty badass.
Anyone know if the club will allow me to bring in a poster tube so my goods don't get destroyed? They usually just offer up a rubber band (blasphemy) and I've finally learned my lesson and will make an attempt at planning ahead.

you're correct (http://www.expressobeans.com/public/detail.php/106498). and according to that forum, they are only offering rubber bands.
the show was entertaining, but i couldn't help but feel it was a contrived act. we had a great vantage point though on the right side of the balcony.

Tonights concert is live on npr. Consolation for those that couldn't make it or missed a ticket. Wish they would also have the opening band on air too. They look pretty interesting, esp. the lead singer.

Live Tonight: The Dead Weather In Concert
Hear The Band Live Online From Washington, D.C., At 9:30 p.m. ET
July 14, 2009 - The 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., will be ground zero for a blistering assault of explosive riff-rock, courtesy of The Dead Weather, in a full concert webcast live on NPR Music Tuesday. The newly formed band, a supergroup featuring members of The White Stripes and The Kills, is scheduled to perform at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET.
The Dead Weather is on tour to support its debut album, the ominously titled Horehound. It's a dark, swampy collection of blues-infused rock songs that sound as heavy as you might expect, given the artists behind them. The Dead Weather features White Stripes frontman Jack White on drums, The Kills singer Alison Mosshart on vocals, The Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence on bass and Dean Fertita, from Queens of the Stone Age and The Raconteurs, on guitar.
The Dead Weather formed toward the end of a recent tour for The Kills and The Raconteurs. Jack White, who also plays in The Raconteurs, had lost his voice to bronchitis and asked Mosshart to take over on vocals. The two loved the energy they had together ? as well as the new sound Mosshart brought to The Raconteurs' songs ? so they decided to record a seven-inch single together. After pulling Fertita in on the project, The Dead Weather spawned a two-week studio session in Nashville, Tenn., and a full-length album.
Horehound is out on Jack White's Third Man Records label, the same imprint behind The White Stripes and The Raconteurs.

And overpriced, just like all the rest of their merch and the tickets to their shows.

How can a poster be considered overpriced when it sells out and then goes for 4x face value on the secondary market?
-
It's still overpriced. I mean, $30 for a poster? Just because Jack White is in the band doesn't mean they have to charge that much...esp. for a band that has one album!

when one equates "over-priced" with "more than i am willing to pay". all depends on usage. what is over-priced for one won't be for another - just ask julian.

$30 bucks isa pretty standard price for a hand screened concert poster. When you start thinking of the big boys in the world of gig posters (emek, horkey, jay ryan, etc), $30 bucks is actually a pretty good deal.
Yeah, it is kinda steep if you think it's an offset print, thin-papered piece of crap that you'd buy in wal-mart, but they're not. It's limited edition, hand-pulled, custom work for a one-time event. A lot of effort goes into designing, printing, shipping, etc just to get it to the venue in time for the show. All those steps have fees and the end result you pay for all those fees plus a small markup.
Then you flip-it on the secondary market and pay for the poster, your ticket, your friends ticket and all your beer (..well, maybe not the beer, especially here).
-
The Dead Weather 45s were available for $6 ... Also you could preorder the CD for $10! Hardly seems overpriced...
-
Take a look at this site for rock posters/other artwork:
http://www.expressobeans.com/
As imbecile said, $30 for a screen print is very reasonable. These aren't intended to be posters you tack up on your wall, they're collectors items. The framing will end up costing you 4 times the price of the print anyway. The EMEK from this years Rothbury sold for $125 at the merch stand. Limited edition screen prints from someone as established as Rob Jones simply do not sell for less than $30.
-
it's always $9.99 during the first week of release in order to get high position on the Billboard charts...!

The National has hand-screen posters - $15. Pearl Jam does $30 posters, but they also have 8 albums out. Maybe $20 or $25 at the most. $30 for The Dead Weather is ridiculous.
$10 was just for the download card - not an actual CD. CDs were $14. T-shirts were $30. Again, not outrageous for The White Stripes, but for the Dead Weather ridiculous.

I think you're ridiculous! How about that!!!!!!!!!
What? there's some sort of "albums you've released to price ratio on mechandise"?? Since when?
Dead Weather may be new but its a Jack WHite project... so its not the first album... its more like the 10th..
I guess by that measure according to your ratio analysis the merch was cheap?
Also, as has been pointed out not all posters are created alike.
Really some people are always looking for an excuse to be negative...Either that or they are very cheap.

I guess $130 for a Dead Weather print is REALLY ridiculous then? I have one of those National posters on my wall, not signed or numbered.

so how WAS last nights show?
tell me they played more songs???
anybody go?
i have this theory second night is always better.. course i always end up going first night!

According to someone who went both nights, it was exactly the same. Surprised?
Not looking for an excuse to be negative, just surprised at how expensive this stuff is just because it's associated with Jack White. When Dave Grohl went from Nirvana to Foo Fighters, he didn't charge Nirvana prices for things. Just sayin...I think the same of Eddie Vedder's crazy prices for his solo stuff...love Pearl Jam, will pay money for Pearl Jam, but will not pay the same or more for one guy. Maybe Jack White should just put some shit on a poster and charge $30.
-
what about a Jack White dildo for $30? I think everyone who went nuts when he played guitar on ONE song would use it.
-
Hutch, your "Jack White is in the band, so it's really like it's a White Stripes concert" argument is incredibly flawed, and rather shitty.
It just shows how much of a prick Jack White is, that he can form a band, release one album, and pretend he's in this legendary rock group that can charge $35 for a 50 minute show.
I'm fine with $30 for a poster. The two I've bought from Wilco were $25, but considering how much work goes into these things, $30 is a steal. But the idea that, just because Jack White is involved, they can charge WS ticket prices is just absurd.

Well I am surprised it was the same..I thought they'd be ashamed to stream such a short show! Its got be less than an hour easy!... But the order was different at least cause from the NPR setlist they didn't end with New Pony the second night.. I don't know all the song titles
people are willing to pay for Jack White stuff.. he's very collectible... his stuff appreciates in value...people are on it
When Grohl went from Nirvana to Foo Fighters he was "the other guy in Nirvana... no not the bassist dude.. the drummer".. he was pretty unknown and completely overshadowed by Cobain...
Thats not the case for Jack White..
Listening to the NPR stream right now.. definitely starts with same song ...

You know gaaaaaaaah or whatever here serves us a perfect example of what happens when people post shit out of their ass without bothering to read just trying to start arguments! I specifically when I started this thread said the ticket price was too high and that it should have been $25....
Learn how to read and next time try "I agree with Hutch that $35 was too much."

I think you're missing the mark on this a bit. As far as the poster goes.. It has way less to do with Jack White than it does the artist and the limited edition aspect. If he did an identical poster but for some other band playing in DC, the price may drop about 5 bucks. That's it. The production cost is still there, and the collectible aspect of the art work is still there. Yeah, Rob Jones and Jack White projects have exclusive poster deals so it can be said that his artwork value is inflated because it all has to do with Jack White, but I don't think that inflation is very substantial.
As for the other merch.. I've only been to 6-7 shows at the club this year, but every one of them had shirts in the $20-30 range, and CDs anywhere from $10-15. In contrast, I saw Isis at the black cat a month or so back and shirts were 12 bucks. When you get to the level that you're selling out the 9:30 club, you're crap is going to be expensive. I hate it just as much as you do, but it's not a product of Jack White having anything to do with it.
Edit.. as for the ticket price discussion: You'll find no arguments from anyone i know that we certainly would not pay $35 for that show again. Way too short.

ONe last thing:
I noticed the Dead Weather was charging $25 in other cities...
Could it be that the 930 Club encouraged the higher price?
I mean does the venue enter at all into the discussions on price?
-
Was the 930 smaller than the other venues?
-
Was the 930 smaller than the other venues?
Good point. I don't know.
-
Well, I'd imagine the band charges a certain amount, and it's relatively consistent for all these shows, so the ticket price might have had to vary to bring in the same amount of money from show to show.
-
The show is $30 in NYC, $35 day of and is at Terminal 5. Probably the biggest venue on the tour would be my guess. I think they were $25 (or maybe even $35) at Bowery Ballroom when they were here a few months ago.
Anyway - regardless of who is playing Terminal 5 - $30 is way tooooooo much.
And the show is $32 at The Wiltern in LA. And almost every show is priced in the $30 range.
So its not like the 9:30 charged some exorbitant price, its right there with everyone else.

Yeah, the show was exactly the same with the order being the only slight difference.

The Screaming Females were awesome. Seriously, one of the best openers I'd never heard of I've seen in a long time. Both nights were great, great sets.
...and their records were only $12.

LOVE it, and love those guys.
-
I went the second night. This show rocked hard! I thought it was one of the best concerts I've seen this year, even if it was short, but I totally expected it to be short since they only have one album. I definitely feel I got my money's worth in any case, especially factoring in the better-than-usual opening band. (Screaming Females were fantastic. They won me over pretty quick.) I don't think $35 is all that much really. I got the poster for $30 too, and I consider that a bargain.

Ended up seeing Dead Weather last night at Terminal 5. The opener was so worth every bit of the money. The opener played close to an hour set and the lead singer sounded like Grace Slick at moments. Incredible vocals. They actually sounded better than Dead Weather. Minus the guys who wouldnt shut up and kept telling them to get off the stage.
Dead Weather played a really tight set. Allison sounded really good and when Jack & Allison sang together it was really great. Im not familiar enough with their album to know the setlist but probably similar to the others. It was under an hour set, but every bit worth $30. Interesting - scalpers couldnt sell the tickets for even $10. No one would pay for them and a lot of people were left hanging with unused tix.
-
Now I wish I would have gone to one of these shows. I've been watching TDW's Late Nite talk show appearances and love what I have seen. Its amazing they do a Pentagram cover! I think ol' Jack White is way better than Meg at the whole drums thing!
-
Ahh Grace Slick! That's who she sounds like.

oh hey wait, Spoon, a band with many albums and a Limited Edition Rob Jones poster for their mini-fest in Austin only charged $20 for said posters: http://spoon.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?cp=691_21826&pc=OOAP55#
I just discovered that. I'm not buyin this $30 for a Dead Weather poster business...I don't care what other people will pay for it.
-
I'd gladly pay $30 for that poster if anyone has an extra or has buyers regret. PM me!! :)
