Title: MBV - roll call for Richmond show, Thurs. 7/30
Post by: Christine Moritz on July 15, 2009, 10:05:43 am
Since the other thread (http://www.930.com/forum/index.php?topic=5271.0) (i.e., the one that began as a roll call for MBV's shows in NYC and at ATP last year) has sunk a bit...

Who else is going to the MBV show in Richmond at the end of the month?

I'll be there along with a few friends of mine. I haven't been this excited for a show since... I don't even know.

I also may need an extra ticket - does anyone have one to spare?

Have been avoiding this thead since I can't go due to various crap in my life and it being too flipping far away from north of Baltimore.  :'( :'( :'(  (You regulars know I'm crying over that.) But damnit Walkie, I had to respond to your comment. I flipping love your description. Yes, I fully understand what you are saying and why it doesn't appeal to all. That's cool. As it is, that's the kind of sound that sometimes completely enraptures me with complete ecstasy. I would absolutely love to experience the blissful sonic massage of MBV. For what it's worth, I sometimes describe my radio station as sounding like 'a herd of psychedelic cows shoegrazing'.

Can't help but wonder if Seth's bitch about the Live Nation exclusivity contracts has something to do with MBV not playing in either DC or Baltimore. Well, any band skipping this neck of the woods.

Seriously, this one's killing me!

I think MBV are a band that can play wherever they want and probably made that clear with LN from the getgo. At least I'd like to think that.

Maybe they just wanted to play somewhere more low-key?

Bands who do tours of mostly LN venues still play 930 all the time.

Someone asked on The National's facebook page how Richmond got a MBV show when other major east coast cities haven't seen them in 18 years and they responded that "several bands including Dinosaur Jr" told Kevin that The National was the best venue in the country and that's why they picked there. I'm sure that's mostly promotional hyperbole, but apparently J Mascis' recommendation (they had just played there in April) had something to do with The National getting that show.

As with most venues that all depends on where you are in the house when listening to the show.  The sound at 930 kicks ass especially with the new system.  The National has sounded better over the last few months than it did when it first opened.  I have no idea if they got new sound people or if the people in place simply learned the equipment better, etc.

The city itself sucks.  Take the bad parts about DC and magnify them 10x then take the good parts about DC and eliminate them, now you have the city of Richmond.  The slip (a few blocks south east of the venue) is the bar scene, but it can be a tad hoity toidy.  The only decent place for food close by, Gibson's Grill,  is partnered with the venue.  It is on the same block as the venue at the corner of 7th and Broad.  They have an early entry deal going for most show.  As far as parking goes, driving west on Broad Street, take a right on 7th and get in your left lane.  There is a deck that the club uses as its 'official' parking.  I believe it is $10 to park.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. Not about Gibson's quality (its ok), but that it's the only decent place close by. Guess it depends on your definition of close by but Tobacco Company, LuLu's, Capital Ale House, Comfort, Chez Foushee (lunch only, admittedly), Bistro 27 and Popkins Tavern are all within 10 blocks.

And that parking garage is $5. Someone can go south on 8th to Cary, then loop back around to 7th and going north and find parking after 6 for free within 2-3 blocks of National. No point in paying AT ALL.

if you don't want to pay for parking all those metered parking areas should be good spots to catch.

Oh? How do you figure, sport? I haven't been in a year (not a meat eater and not a particularly vegetarian friendly menu) but several of my friends with discerning palettes go frequently and it's a perennial "top 10 restaurants in richmond" list entry from the Times-Dispatch and Style Weekly.

Also I left off Lemaire (Virginia's only 5 star restaurant) and TJ's, both in the Jefferson. FABULOUS.

i did only eat there once, and it was atleast a year ago.  both my partner and i ordered apps, salads, drinks, totally different meals, and even dessert.  after we walked out, we were like

perhaps it was a case of "bad night" but the food was just not good compared to what i like to eat in dc, especially when it's rated as "one of the town's best."  and i stayed at the jefferson once, and fabu is such an understatement, sweetie britches.

For parking near the National, you're fine on-street wise. Nearly all of the meters aren't in use after 6 PM - its all 2 hr parking from 8 to 6. When I saw SY last week, I parked on 8th st one block from the venue without having to pay a meter.

Also, what is the price range for Gibson's Grill? My group have been thinking about where to eat beforehand.

And Julian, what are the price ranges of some of those restaurants? I know that Tobacco Company and Capital Ale aren't the cheapest, so which ones are?

$120, and it's about 7 blocks from The National. Gorgeous building... not The Jefferson, but I think you'd be pleased.

Capital Ale House is definitely alot cheaper than Tobacco, Lemaire or TJs. You can get a burger and beer for, idk, $15 with tip.

LuLus, Comfort, or Bistro 27 are all going to run you 15-20 for entrees. Popkins Tavern is a gastropub and a definite good value. Really cool building and food whose quality far exceeds its pricetag.

So, in short, Gibson's, Popkins and Capital Ale would be your bottom tier price wise, Comfort, LuLu's, and Bistro 27 the middle tier, and Tobacco, Lemaire and TJ the upper tier. (Because it's been a while since I've busted out some tier rankings!)

Also, if you're interested in trying Popkin Tavern, this site (http://www.halfoffdeals.com/show-deal.php?promo_id=72167) is selling $50 gift certificates for $25, and you can use them for alcohol too. Pretty good liquor selection as well, I know they have Hendrick's Gin, a personal favorite.

I second capital ale house.  Very good place to go before the show, because of the very nice beer selection (if only it were monday for dollar burger night, it'd be heaven).  I also second the notion that there is a whole lot of good food in the area.

However, if you're going to go anywhere further than that, tobacco company et al, you're probably gonna wanna drive (it's only a few blocks, but still, why walk when  you can drive and it's easy.. unless you've been drinking).. and if you're going to drive.  You need to make your way to the bottom to 17th and Dock street and go to Bottom's Up Pizza.  Soooo good.  Of if you're in the mood for generic bar food, there's a BW3's right down there too.

It's really not far away, Total of 13 or so blocks from the club.

Anyway, once you're in the bottom, it's not too rough to get back to the National.. just make your way up Main Street for about 10 blocks to 7th and then find somewhere to park.  Anywhere between there and Broad street, anywhere on (9th, 8th, 7th running north/south and Grace, Franklin or Main running East/west) is only a one-two block walk to the club and is free street parking.

I was with you through paragraph 1. Then you told people to go to Bottom's Up Pizza and Buffalo Wild Wings, wtF?

If we're going to get people to drive, send them west towards Carytown and check out Verbena, Avalon, Bacchus or Mezzanine.

Post by: imbecile on July 16, 2009, 05:05:45 pm
Ha.. I like Bottom's up.. what can i say.  Not the best pizza, but i've been hammered way too many times in the bottom to not enjoy it.

Oh... that makes me think of Sin-e.  If anyone has the hankering for an irish resaturant pre-MBV.

As for BW3's.. i surely wouldn't go there, but some people may.  I know a decent number of people who wouldn't want to stray from their comfort level and stick to chains.  It's not me, but it happens.

I also specifically avoided sending people the other way towards the fan and carytown for the reason you mentioned.. waaay too many food options.  It'd be very hard to narrow it down to only a few.  Avalon and Bacchus are both great places to go, but for my money I'd be heading to Sticky Rice for a delicious bucket of tots before the show.  I probably lost you with that one too.

Nah, we do the Rice every couple of weeks, and that sauce they put on the tater tots is like crack. It's not classy, and the sushi and sashimi is a bit lacking, but always a fun evening. Always.

Well I guess our definitions of close vary.  TC, Sine, and the others are OK.  WAY overpriced, especially TC, but not exactly what I would call close in the sense of walking distance.  A lot of those 10 blocks are huge hills and not exactly great places to walk.  I did forget about the Ale House.  That is just 2 blocks away (on 7th street south of the venue).  You are right about parking now that I think about it.  It is some other club *cough* that is $10! :)

Well, with all due respect, dear friend, your particular medical issues might limit the area you wish to walk. I have walked many a time from Shockoe Bottom to The National with other people, and never thought twice about the distance.

I just go with their vegan and vegetarian rolls.  I enjoy them quite a bit, but it's kinda hard to screw up vegetarian sushi.  Agree on the tater tots, quite addicting, and it is always a good time.

Now I just wish the new-ish one up here on H. street was remotely comparable to the one back in Richmond.

"Yeah, okay so i admit I'm the one who made the tracks. As has been mentioned, the main song of Cowboy Song is Slim Whitman's "Indian Love Call", the looped feedback is Third Eye Foundation's "Sleep"."

I live six blocks from the National. anyone trying to burn some doob?

In any case, here are my recommendations for food in Richmond . . .

821 Cafe (821 W. Cary St, good burgers, good vegetarian sammiches, charming, very much a relic of GRUNGE 90's)
Comfort (200 W. Broad, walking distance from the National, trendy "American Cuisine" but done proper, good vibes for yuppie fuckwads, PROLIFIC WHISKY COLLECTION, good mac'n'cheese, fish, noveau-meatloaf, et al)
Kuba Kuba (1601 Park Ave, dope Cuban restaurant, tight seating but chill vibes, good strong coffee, cuban sammich, awesome tostones, pasta dishes are pretty rad and huge enough for date sharing)
Alladins (801 W. Broad St, I used to live on top of this joint when I was 19, stoner/drunk fried food, excellent shwarma/gyro/baba ganoush/falafel. You can even get falafel on pizza, open crazy late, tapestries and hookahs to trip out on. kinda sketchy about some additional tax they charge, but good for blazed gyros and curly fries)
Perlys (111 E Grace St, for lunch, breakfast, closes at 3:00 PM, fucking great though, inexpensive short order diner, always playing good jazz, the friendliest cute southern waitresses, awesome sandwiches)
Little Mexico Burrito Chop (Broad and Laurel, next to Alladins, similar aesthetic to Chipotle, but more authentic flavors and cooks, local, free guacamole and chips, good vibes, real tender meat, better selection of vegetarian options for burrito (mushroom, spinach, peppers and onions, a couple more kinds of fresh salsas than Chipotle)

Comfort (200 W. Broad, walking distance from the National, trendy "American Cuisine" but done proper, good vibes for yuppie fuckwads, PROLIFIC WHISKY COLLECTION, good mac'n'cheese, fish, noveau-meatloaf, et al)
This is the only place you listed I like, but it's a definite winner. Excellent liquor selection all around.

I've been to a decent amount of places that have hookahs and the gratuitous taxes seem to be a uniform thing with them. Wonder why that is.

Hmmm, I don't think I've ever met Mr. Pretentious, and if I had, I'd think the only person I'd complain about on this board would be Joe and him stalking me.

But I digress...my trip to Richmond will be in and out...no time for champagne coolies on my drive.  Plus, I'd be worrying too much about what to wear!

It does say "with a special guest," which is standard language on the venue's website for "opener TBA." I'm sure there'll be somebody, but Dino Jr would probably be hoping for too much.

Then again, on the National's facebook page someone asked why MBV was playing there instead of somewhere else and they said Dino Jr. told them it was the best venue in the country, so maybe??

I don't think you'd posted in this thread that you were attending at the time invites went out. :(

Sorry, all the seats are taken at my table for the pre-show cocktail party and dinner. If you want to come after-party, you're more than welcome to, although sadly we have a "no-beards and no-people-who've-talked-crap-about-julian-in-the-past" rule so you'd have to come solo, I think.

I understand if those circumstances predicate you declining.

It looks like tickets are readily available on here and according to that Dallas Observer interview w/ Kevin  from a few months back, this may be your last chance to see this set. Would be a shame for you to miss it.

Recap of parking suggestions:

As far as parking goes, driving west on Broad Street, take a right on 7th and get in your left lane.  There is a deck that the club uses as its 'official' parking.  I believe it is $10 to park.

And that parking garage is $5. Someone can go south on 8th to Cary, then loop back around to 7th and going north and find parking after 6 for free within 2-3 blocks of National. No point in paying AT ALL.

if you don't want to pay for parking all those metered parking areas should be good spots to catch.

For parking near the National, you're fine on-street wise. Nearly all of the meters aren't in use after 6 PM - its all 2 hr parking from 8 to 6. When I saw SY last week, I parked on 8th st one block from the venue without having to pay a meter.

Recap of food recommendations/discussion/disagreements:

The only decent place for food close by, Gibson's Grill,  is partnered with the venue.  It is on the same block as the venue at the corner of 7th and Broad.  They have an early entry deal going for most show.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. Not about Gibson's quality (its ok), but that it's the only decent place close by. Guess it depends on your definition of close by but Tobacco Company, LuLu's, Capital Ale House, Comfort, Chez Foushee (lunch only, admittedly), Bistro 27 and Popkins Tavern are all within 10 blocks.

the tobacco comp. is horrible.  such a shame, too . . . the decor was delightful.

FABULOUS.

i did only eat there once, and it was atleast a year ago.  both my partner and i ordered apps, salads, drinks, totally different meals, and even dessert.  after we walked out, we were like [image: "hated it"]

perhaps it was a case of "bad night" but the food was just not good compared to what i like to eat in dc, especially when it's rated as "one of the town's best."  and i stayed at the jefferson once, and fabu is such an understatement, sweetie britches.

Also, what is the price range for Gibson's Grill? My group have been thinking about where to eat beforehand.

And Julian, what are the price ranges of some of those restaurants? I know that Tobacco Company and Capital Ale aren't the cheapest, so which ones are?

I probably lost you with that one too.

but for my money I'd be heading to Sticky Rice for a delicious bucket of tots before the show.

Also - for anyone venturing to Carytown - eat (even if only for desert) at galaxy diner. Nuff said.

[re. Sticky Rice:]
I just go with their vegan and vegetarian rolls.  I enjoy them quite a bit, but it's kinda hard to screw up vegetarian sushi.  Agree on the tater tots, quite addicting, and it is always a good time.

Now I just wish the new-ish one up here on H. street was remotely comparable to the one back in Richmond.

here are my recommendations for food in Richmond . .

It's in large part for my own use, so I can easily copy/paste and print things like the parking info and food recommendations.  (I don't know Richmond at all.)  But I figured others could profit too.

Two girls next to me bolted after the third song with hands on ears. Then during 'Realise' a group of jockish dudes took off with defeated looks on their faces.
Not only brain massage, the hair on my arms was sticking straight up vibrating to the music.
It was cool to see/hear they really aren't just Kevin's band.
Debbie and Colm are a tight rhythm section that make them shine live.

Miss P -- I don't keep track of setlists during shows, but I have a weird uncontrollable habit of counting songs bands play, and I had 14 at shows' end, so I guess they did play everything on that setlist.

And opener aside, this was one of the best shows I've ever seen. The sound was overwhelming yet very clear where I was standing. I think the claims of The National having a bad sound system/acoustics can be put to rest. Wow.

did MBV use the national's PA system, or their own?  i thought they were touring with their own - thus, we might not be able to draw any conclusions abut the national's PA...

Yeah, that was just as incredible as the Roseland show I caught. And they did indeed play all that. Roseland had Sueisfine but other than that, I'm pretty sure it was the same setlist. That dude from the Lilys must be good friends with them; only way I could've seen him getting that gig.

I'm sure I'll get beat up for this, but I actually thought the sound was pretty so-so, or worse. Having never seen MBV live, I was basically hoping for something better than a wall of sound. The bass was way too powerful in the mix, when she was complaining about it on stage, i was complaining about it on the floor. I really didn't expect to hear any vocals, but I found it hilarious that they still kept trying to sing. And the "holocaust" section during Realize to me was simply self-indulgent and unnecessary.

While not a life-long MBV fan, I have always liked Loveless. And the experience of seeing them was awesome, and the show was good, but I was not blown away at all. Sorry to be the debbie downer in the room...
Title: Re: MBV - roll call for Richmond show, Thurs. 7/30
Post by: secretsquirrel on July 31, 2009, 12:24:58 pm
I had never seen them before, and was a little surprised at the volume.. I guess when I thought everyone said MBV was loud, that it meant there would be huge blaring guitars in the mix. Instead it was REALLY loud bass and such, and that made it really overwhelming and stuff (which was awesome) but it also made songs like Only Shallow kind of disappointing. Maybe it was where I was standing? (in the middle, about half way between the sound board and stage) It just would've been nice if the bass and drums didn't totally engulf the vocals and guitars.

Great show overall though. I did not expect to like the Holocaust, but I really enjoyed it. You could pan around and see so many people smiling... excellent.

Only Shallow is one song I don't think they have/will ever pin down live.
And the vocals sounded as audible to me as they do on the albums in most songs. I couldn't hear any in I Only Said but that was it.

Well to be fair, claims of venues having bad sound systems can never ever be put to rest no matter what. Some people seem to think it's some sort of gloriously hipster-iffic contrarian position to tell everyone how every venue they've ever stepped in have bad sound.

Post by: Captain Jack on July 31, 2009, 05:55:34 pm
There was an awesome old British dude, mostly bald flanked by white wings of freak hair that was chilling by the soundbooth who must have been the MBV soundguy.

I did the first song without earplugs and then spent the rest of the set sort of in and out of the earplugs. Taking them out I was able to hear way more of the intense, constantly squeeling guitar feedback from Belinda's amps that was non-existent with earplugs in, but the bass and a couple of the drums were so heavy in the mix it crushed my drone feedback boner.

Post by: Mobius on July 31, 2009, 08:44:22 pm
Ahhhhh, that was so great!

Got to Richmond later than I hoped and after a burger and a couple of Macallan's 12 at Gibson's I got into the National at 7:45, got a legend beer and found a good spot midway back of the floor, center, and waited and waited. . . I almost never do that, but it was a solid real estate investment . . . the opener was fine background music as I relived in my head the different times i listened to MBV over the years, tried to remember where I bought Loveless, Isn't Anythiing, the Glider ep, that other ep, how much I paid etc., etc., etc., until finally it started

I took my earplugs out early in the first song and didn't put them back in until the Realise noisefest. .  . didn't seem dangeroulsy loud to me and the only really jarring thing were those intermittant bass earthquakes shaking the foundation of the songs, the venue and your body . . . and the clarity of the drums and trying to hear all the nuances of the mix were too much to miss given the apparent lack of danger

One thing that often gets overlooked w/ MBV is how f*cking great Colm O'Coisig is on drums . . .clean nuclear fills driving many songs . . . driving the waves of sound, or is it riding the waves of sound . . . or more subtley providing structure

Certainly Kevin was inaudible at times, but mostly he and Bilinda could be heard . . . and anyway, the vocals floating in and out is to be expected/hoped for

When the band locked in, and Bilinda coooed over the mix, or traded vocals with Kevin . . . time disappeared and it was the greatest

The Realise 'holocaust' was cool, but had been so built up in my mind prior that the shock and awe element was diminished . . . but it was interesting just getting lost in it and trying to discern the texture of it and it struck me how particularly clear and powerful the song sounded when they dropped back into the regular verse.

Longshot I know but what was the song they played over the PA before the Pentagram song between sets? The melody has been stuck in my head for three days but I can't place it. It was sort of an upbeat psychedelic pop song.

I am finally catching up with forum stuff after being offline for most of Friday-Saturday-Sunday...

I didn't meet any boardies however I did run into Christine but I didn't introduce myself.  Christine you asked me while I was in line if this was the line for will call tickets.  Didn't realize it was you at first but then saw the shirt and thought thats her.  I wanted to ask you about the ones and the twos  ;D

Too bad you didn't introduce yourself!

I really enjoyed the show.  Will post more detailed thoughts later...

My thoughts on the show:

I really enjoyed it.  My memory of the MBV show I attended in spring 1992 is somewhat hazy after 17.5 years, but I was really blown away by that show and was worried a bit that this one might suffer in comparison.

Like Slappy and Mobius, I was impressed with the rhythm section of Debbie and Colm (especially Colm).  They really seemed to be the core of the live show -- full of energy, very kinetic, interesting to watch.

I regret to say that I thought Bilinda Butcher was almost completely lacking in stage presence -- I love her voice, but she didn't seem to manifest any energy or emotion either while singing or playing guitar.  (I'm not sure if this was also the case during the 1992 show or if maybe I was too far away to tell either way.)  Kevin Shields, on the other hand, did seem to be into what he was doing.  So that was good.

I didn't think the sound in the venue was perfect, but I was so far up in the front (the second or third "row" of people) that it might have sounded different to me than to someone further back, more within the range of one or both banks of speakers.  Bilinda's vocals were audible, but Kevin's were so low that someone near me kept yelling "Turn on your mic!"  I got the impression that the balance in the monitors onstage was different than the balance in the house sound.

I also thought that the bass was excessive, but that might've been what MBV was aiming for.

I loved the show overall, and I knew what was coming with the "holocaust" section of "You Made Me Realise"... but it did seem unnecessary and self-indulgent, especially given how short the show was.  They could've used that time to play 2-3 other songs!  I didn't find it "loud" per se (I was wearing earplugs the whole time), but the force of that sheer wall of sound made me feel somehow constricted in the throat, like I was going to choke or something.  I was just waiting for it to be over.

Debbie and Colm are a tight rhythm section that make them shine live.

Debbie was a total badass. Hell, they all were.

The show itself was amazing. Loud and everything - I thought the sound was fine, but then again, I'm not a sound wiz or anything. But I thought the sound, especially during the holocaust, was cool. And, speaking of the holocaust, holy poo on a stick. That was the most intense noise I've ever experienced (sorry aphex twin, you're coachella set is now 2nd).

My only complaint is that Kevin's vocals weren't loud enough. Yes yes yes, I know - the vocals aren't really the highlight of shoegaze. On Loveless, you really can't tell what Kevin or Bilinda are saying. But you can still hear them, and that is what I wanted to experience. I don't want to hear what they're saying, but I do want to hear their voices, even if the words are practically indecipherable. I think that's what makes it real shoegaze - you can hear the vocals but can't understand them. Hopefully that makes some sense.

Btw, I talked to the sound engineer after the show. He said they hit 130 decibels during Realise.

And from where I was, as soon as they turned on the lights after YMMR, you could see chips of paint falling from the ceiling.

Amazing.

try telling yourself that five to ten years from now when "what . . . what?" becomes a common phrase.

well I was prepared for this with earplugs, so my ears felt totally fine afterward. I didn't have the courage to take them out.

I thought the show was awesome, one of those "dreams come true" concerts. I've been wanting to see MBV perform for 7-8 years now, and it didn't disappoint. Anyway, it was definitely worth the ~3 hour drive back and forth.

I listened to the whole concert with earplugs (my own, not the ones they gave out), and I experienced no hearing problems after the show. I didn't think it was too loud at all. I've been to some painfully loud shows over the years, and this wasn't one of them. Maybe it was because the loudness was mostly low frequency instead of high frequency.

I wouldn't say the sound was perfect by any means, however. It was a bit muddy from where I was (middle right, about a third of the way back from the stage). I would have liked more vocals in the mix, but it's MBV so that's just not to be expected.

"Realise" was amazing. It felt like I was taking a shower, only instead of water hitting me, it was sound and light. The air was electrified and the whole experience was intense. The air wrapped around me like a blanket and massaged me. I felt connected to everyone else in the audience. It was completely unlike anything I've ever experienced before. Just wow.

After the show, I saw Christine talking to some guy. I tried to say hi, but I was too shy to interrupt their conversation.

The drive home kind of sucked. Ran into road construction on 95 around exit 161 that delayed me about a half hour. I should've taken 301 home instead. I took 301 south to get to Richmond, and it was easy driving, though a few too many traffic lights in the more populated areas.

they were much softer in richmond than at kutchers. never thought i'd say this, but i am ever so thankful for city decibel limits. they sounded perfect imo.

Ahh... that was a friend of mine from Chapel Hill.  I didn't know he was going to the show, but he'd seen me mention it on Facebook and texted me when he was there, so we met up briefly afterward.

Here are my vids for you Made Me Realize from the show.  Broken up into two parts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpGcbfh3ljM&feature=channel_page
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAnRvB8hxSc&feature=channel_page

they were awesome at all points too!!  However Tool fans were ruthless for booing them, telling them to turn up the mics, and giving them the finger.  It was a shame  :o

oh yeah I suggest you listen to it with headphones sounds nice  ;D

Took video of Only Shallow - missed the open because they had a false start and I wasn't sure how long they'd take to get going:

hope MBV don't come around again. if they do, azagh will start hating them.

just ask him about Dirty Projectors, Fleet Foxes, Raveonettes, and Animal Collective.

I have no problems with AC.

The next time they come around, they'll have a whole new batch of material.

That MBV material is timeless, though.

And yes, FF and DP are one-trick ponies while the Raveonettes wish they were JAMC.

And your comparing the mighty MBV to buzzbands like DP and FF is heretical and if there was any justice, such a crime would have you paying by having your ears cut off.
