Title: Coachella 2010
Post by: sweetcell on January 12, 2010, 03:51:49 pm
lineup to be announced on thursday, supposedly.  confirmed and rumored acts: http://consequenceofsound.net/festival-outlook/coachella-valley-music-and-arts-festival/

who is going this year?  looks like i'll pass - FNM and soundgarden would interesting additions, if they get them, but overall the lineup isn't enough to put me on a plane (even if all the rumors turn out to be true).

Fever Ray, Florence & the Machine, Orbital, Grace Jones!

another name that caught my eye: Talvin Singh.  i've been wanting to see him for years.  frightened rabbit is cool too, i wonder if this means they'll be touring on the east coast too.

overall, i'm reconsidering my decision to not go... this is a very respectable lineup, IMO.

They toured at the end of 2009:

http://pitchfork.com/news/36429-public-image-ltd-reunite-for-uk-tour/

thanks, didn't know that.  reviews of the shows are universally positive, 4 out of 5 stars: guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/dec/16/public-image-ltd-review), independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/first-night-public-image-ltd-o2-academy-birmingham-1842068.html), telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/live-music-reviews/6867462/Public-Image-Ltd.-at-the-O2-Academy-Brixton-review.html).

do gorillaz play behind a screen or how are they playing live now?

i'd imagine it'll be something like that, they're promising a "multimedia extravaganza".  i believe that they haven't played for some time now so who knows what they'll use.  in the past they've projected holograms on a clear plastic film stretched across the stage, one can only imagine that for this gig they're going to pull out something cool.

My flight has been booked for a few weeks now. I've been the past 2 coachellas and this one is the best yet.

Can't believe I'm going to see Orbital and Thom Yorke... holy shit.

Oh man, I dont even want to begin to imagine the possible conflicts. Upon first glance, I really want to see:

Orbital
Thom Yorke
Infected Mushroom
Echo & the Bunnymen
Fever Ray
Gorillaz (at least some of them)
LCD Soundsystem
Jay Z (at least some of him)
Gary Numan
The Whitest Boy Alive
Flying Lotus
Faith No More (at least some of them)
Plastikman
Deerhunter
Z-Trip
Mew
Glitch Mob

and so many more. There are so many of the "holy shit they actually booked them?" acts on there. Arguably Coachella's best lineup yet.

you do not want to see infected mushroom.  at a minimum, have another act at the same time that you'll be ready to move on to once you realize how much they blow.

nice catch on plastikman, didn't notice that.

i wonder what the deal is with the question marks after thom yorke's name on the poster.  i'm hoping he'll have the same band backing him as he did in LA recently (included flea), but maybe they're indicating something else?

It's been confirmed that Thom Yorke will be performing with the project he was with in LA last fall, the one including Flea and Nigel Godrich.

and I like Infected Mushroom - they were awesome at V-fest a few years back. But I'll probably be missing them due to conflicts.

This lineup is just so damn stacked.

Thom Yorke??? is how they refer to the unnamed collaboration between himself, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco, and Flea. I believe they were billed this way when they played the few ?The Eraser? shows last year in CA.  ;D

i was surprised that SSPU weren't on the bill, given that they are touring with Muse... but Coachella is immediately after the end of the tour, and SSPU played the festival last year.

Jonsi from Sigur Ros added.

There's speculation of a big name (maybe Beastie Boys) being added to Friday.

in case y'all can't wait to secure your ticket, muse is having a presale for 3-day passes: https://tix.concertmaps.com/muse/

1 ticket = $304 with all fees (cue the inevitable "too fucking expensive" griping).  ticketmaster will be $269 + fees (which are unknown), onsale is friday.  who knows which one will be cheapest.  i suspect that the presale will be a few bucks less, but don't hold me to that.

You wont find very many of them playing in LA around the time of the fest due to a restriction clause in the contract signed - Coachella wants it so the only way you can see them is to come to the festival.

But you'll find almost all of them playing in SF before/after the fest.

Just curious, what seems so bad to you.  Apart from Pavement, Gary Numan, Orbital, and (camp out at Outdoor Theater for a good spot for Atoms for Peace) all at the same time, the conflicts seem pretty minimal to me.

Orbital vs. Gary Numan is immensely painful for me. Same with Orbital only getting 55 minutes - less than any other Sahara act that day. AND on at 8pm. That's a joke, right GV?

Plastikman vs Yorke is also rough, but understandable.

Also, the Sahara tent closing at 1030 (first time its ever closed early). What gives? But I probably only feel this way because I'm not a big Gorillaz fan.

Saturday is a good day. I'm ok with that.

As for Friday, PiL vs Fever Ray really really sucks. But Friday could've been worse. My main problems are with Sunday.

Coachella stars stuck in UK

Volcanic ash scuppers US festival shows by Numan, Sumner and The Cribs

http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20100416_coachella_cancelled.shtml

Frightened Rabbit and Los Campesinos have also been stranded. But many other British acts have made it over.

Headliners Gorillaz and Muse were in the US before the volcanic cloud struck, as were The Specials, Thom Yorke, Florence and the Machine, Hot Chip, The XX and La Roux.

Coachella has been great so far.  The crowd size hasn't seemed bad, and it has been pretty easy to get to see any show from a decent spot with a little forethought.

The Pavement show in Pomona was epic.  They played for two hours, roughly 30 songs.  The band isn't as loose as they used to be, but they have a grandeur and majesty to it now that didn't used to be there.  Malkmus brought some of the noodling of his solo work to it in a good way.

On Friday, Yeasayer was fanastic.  The Specials was lots of fun actually.  Them Crooked Vultures were predictibly great.  LCD Soundsystem felt like a bit of a letdown, with the new material not seeming as strong as the older stuff.  Fever Ray might have been the best thing I saw that day.

Band of Skulls were great today.  The Ravenettes had to play without their band, who was stuck in Europe, and they were great stripped down to the two of them.  Faith No More was great.  Muse played without their tower things that they were using on their tour.

Title: Re: Coachella 2010
Post by: Mr.Whippy on April 19, 2010, 07:08:57 am
I didn't catch PIL because it was the same time as Fever Ray, but someone whose taste I trust saw the beginning of PIL and said it was phenomenal from what they heard.  I don't know what it means, though, that they left not far into it.

Sunday was fantastic.  Mutemath were surprisingly good.  Jonsi was great.  Sly Stone was supposed to come on at 7, and right at that time someone announced that his set had been postponed.  Sly ended up playing during the Gorillaz set starting at 10:45.  I didn't hear anything about how it was.

Thom Yorke was probably my favorite thing of the weekend.  Atoms for Peace is just much more aggressive than radiohead, and it it a great side of Thom to see.

The Gorillaz set was really fun and interesting.  The band was plainly visible and lit up, but had some really elaborate videos for the different songs.  It was great to see Damon work the crowd and actually perform the songs like a front man.

On Saturday, I didn't see MGMT, but heard several people bitching at the end of the night about how they didn't play Kids.  That is pretty funny.

Best acts I saw:

PiL - Probably the best show I saw all weekend. The setlist is stellar and sounded perfect, and Lydon was filled with raw emotion that the band played off of perfectly. I wasn't even that big of a fan, but was captivated and wouldn't leave for Fever Ray only two songs in. Despite Jah Wobble not being there, he really has put together a tight group to this with. I will definitely be getting a ticket to the 9:30 show, and you should too.

Orbital - Another great set and my most anticipated. They were awesome, played the classics, and filled the sahara with their samples and groovy mixes. Seeing all the raver kids leave after Infected Mushroom made for a really chill atmosphere for Orbital's set.

Plastikman live - Holy shit. Richie is a genius when it comes to dropping the darkest yet danciest minimal techno out there. Insane visuals, heavy basslines, and simple yet creative beats had me dancing harder than anything else I've seen in a while. It was so good it was scary. Ask me on some days, and I'll say that it was better than Orbital - and that's coming from someone who's most anticipated act was Orbital.

Those are the 3 best I saw this weekend. Other great sets I saw included Devo, Echo & the Bunnymen, Flying Lotus, Jason Bently, The Specials, The Ravonettes, Deerhunter, Jonsi, and Faith No More.

I'll recap Sly Stone's trainwreck in another post - it's worth reading.

Also, ran into someone wearing a 9:30 club t-shirt and working at the merch table. Whippy, was that you? or someone else? I did say "hey" and commented that I was from the east coast too and it was nice to see some club representation at the fest. I recognized the guy, too. Works at the club.

And now, festival downsides for this year:

1) Way too crowded. GV needs to go back to selling 50-60k tickets and not 75k. It made for an atmosphere and vibe that took away from the charm that normally makes Coachella so unique, and replaced it with 15,000 electro teens and hipsters. The tents for certain acts were way too crowded and overflowing with people.

2) Parking sucked on Friday and Sunday. This city has had 10 years to get this right, so it does deserve some bitching. I've heard stories of people that got off the freeway in the afternoon and didnt get to the festival until 9pm, or people being blatantly turned away from parking altogether.

3) Poor festival staff coordination. Hardly any of the volunteers knew what was going on. People were sneaking in left and right. They at one point ran out of wristbands to give out to festival attendees - WTF?

There's alot more to these complaints too that have really hit home with some of the veterans, and its shit that GV really needs to address this time around.

All in all, a fun weekend indeed. As a whole, I'm not sure how it compares with the other years I've been, but I did see alot of fine music this past weekend.

Coachella has been great so far.  The crowd size hasn't seemed bad, and it has been pretty easy to get to see any show from a decent spot with a little forethought.

Orbital was definitely my favorite act of the weekend.  I had not seen them since Glastonbury '99 and they did not disappoint.  I agree, it was so great seeing all the kids clear out of the Sahara tent after Infected Mushroom so we could just slide in there with no problem.  I also enjoyed Yo La Tengo, The Specials, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Big Pink.  The sea of humanity at Phoenix was insane.

Betao, I'm curious what felt too crowded to you.  I found that, with the exception of Thom Yorke (for which I camped out for an hour), I was able to get a great spot in front of the soundboard for any set by getting there just 10 minutes early.  It might have helped, though, that I avoided the sets of bands that are big with the kids these days (MGMT, Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend, etc.).

Lines for food, etc., also didn't seem too bad at any time.

My buddy and I accidentally found a back way to drive into the festival, and we never waited more than about 15 minutes to park, which was great.  Also, we got there early each day and getting in to the festival never took more than about 15 minutes.

Whippy,

That's very true. It does depend on the band and their current hype/popularity status. I remember finding  good spots for The Specials, Echo/Bunnymen, and especially PiL were incredibly easy. I instantly hated the crowds when a surge of teens rudely pushed their way towards the front of the outdoor theatre to get spots for Vampire Weekend as soon as Echo had finished. Kinda gives you an idea of the average age of the fans this year. Too many fucking kiddie ravers.

Also, acts like Yeasayer, Grizzly Bear, and Beach House over filled their tents. Trust me, I've been since 2008, and I know that with 15,000 less people, that probably would've worked out much better. Especially with the first two - unless you were about 15-20 minutes early, there was no way you were watching that set with a good spot with good sound. And if you were in the back of the crowds, the sound bleed from the do-lab would affect the experience.

At night, it was pretty rough. Trying to go from stage to stage or tent to tent often made you feel like a fish swimming upstream against everyone else going the other direction. Just too many people.

The overcrowdedness has drawn alot of attention and criticism this year. The regulars on the coachella board, who are devotees who look forward to it every year more than I do, are practically vowing to never return unless the problems are addressed. There's even a site for all of it: http://clusterfuckchella.wordpress.com

I'll probably go back, but if GV doesn't do something or at least address these issues, I won't be looking forward to it nearly as much.

I'm late to the party, but...this was my FAVORITE Coachella aside from a few minor gripes.

1) What the FUCK was up with getting out of the parking lot of Day 1? It took us two hours and change to GET OUT OF THE LOT. Seriously. Fuck their uncoordinated asses.

2) Less people, please?

--

Aside from that, I caught BRILLIANT sets from Sunny Day Real Estate, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Fever Ray, Gorillaz, Corinne Bailey-Rae (SHE'S KIND OF GREAT), Deerhunter, and The Gossip. Also loved Ra Ra Riot's set and Local Natives. Imogen Heap is the worst thing to happen to live music in a LONG time. Victoria from Beach House became hot like, overnight. Grizzly Bear looked bored.

And as for my biggest surprise of the fest...LUCERO.

Wowie wow. They are AMAZING. Gritty, raw vocals and one of the tightest southern rock bands I've seen. I would love to see them tour with the Heartless Bastards!

Yeah, Lucero is great.  I would have loved to catch them at Coachella, but my schedule didn't allow it.

I think Thatguy is a fan of theirs, judging by how hard he was rocking during the solo set Lucero's singer did opening for the Pogues a while back.  I think he was even shouting out song requests.

lucero is one of my favorites for sure.  just saw them at sonar a few weeks back, and it was amazing as always.  ben nichols' solo album is worth a listen as well.

requests are a big part of lucero shows.  everything usually starts off nice and neat, and then degenerates into something a bit more...organic.  there's nothting like seeing lucero live.

i am waaaaay past the point of a mosh pit holding any appeal.  i don't go in there unless i'm being paid.

i tend to watch shows from somewhere near FOH.
