Lemme guess, the first words out of their mouths when getting the cuffs slammed on them were "BUT OFFICER, WE WERE JUST HAVING FUN!" Finally, people are being held accountable for their disrespectful and inappropriate behavior. Nothing like having a felony charge dropped on you to ruin your day. I would vote for Fenty if he cracked down on the snowballers.

Woman charged with assaulting D.C. officer in snowball fight
A 21-year-old woman has been charged with assault on a police officer after a District officer was hit in the face with an "ice ball" during a large snowball fight early Wednesday morning near the Wonderland Ballroom at 11th and Kenyon streets NW, according to police spokesman Sgt. Nicholas Breul.
Breul said he was still gathering information and did not have the woman's name available.
Breul said Third District officers has been called to "a disorderly snowball fight" at approximately 2 a.m.
The arrest is the latest in snowball fight police news.
Two 21-year-old James Madison University students were charged Saturday with a felony for throwing missiles at an occupied vehicle after they allegedly threw snowballs at a city plow and an unmarked police car.
And D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier has said that the internal investigation into the detective who pulled his weapon during a December snowball fight at 14th and U streets NW was "complete" but she had not yet seen the results.
When some in the crowd threw a snowball at Det. Michael Baylor's car, he confronted them with a drawn weapon, prompting other police to respond to reports of a man with a gun. The incident was captured on video and reverberated widely on the Web, prompting Lanier and other officials to speak out condemning Baylor's actions.
Baylor was put on desk duty after the incident, pending the investigation.

God, you're such a bitch.
Sounds like somebody's got a good sized snowball wedged in their cold vagina.
-
If I still had my DC Bar license, I would represent each one of them, FREE OF CHARGE.
The only thing I hate worse than cops, is cops with no sense of humor.
-
Here's a case where the old codgers have a tiny bit of weight on their side because it supposedly was an ice ball. As much as I'm completely on the snowball revellers side, I'm also completely for having completey fair, clean and safe battles.
We only have this one article so don't know the full story but this is extreme. Most of all, a FELONY!?!?!? WTF!?!?!?!?!? This being considered a 'felony offense' in a city that ignores smash and grabs. Get a flipping grip! Even if it turns out that there's more to the story, such as rocks inside, etc., to make this a felony, seems a bit exteme; especially when you consider that the cop car was 'undercover' (UNMARKED).
Now for snowball participants who play dirty, go get 'um! But get 'um with things like, uh, snowballs, scoldings, loitering sorts of tactics, or, at most, a minor fine.
To the snowballers: Please don't be the few bad apples who ruin it for the majority of good spirited folk. Play fair and use a little common sense.
-
Regardless of whether or not it was a snowball or iceball, anybody who rejoices over kids getting popped with a felony over something like this mustn't have a shred of humanity.
-

I could never say it any better than this.
-
a felony, really? you cant really think that's justice?
-
Alla felony means is that the possible sentence include 1 year or more incarceration. Having said that, the age of the individuals involved is 100% irrelevant. How much fun they were having is 100% irrelevant. There is no difference in throwing an ice ball at a vehicle and throwing a brick. Should we allow 'kids' a free pass when they throw a brick at a car as long as they say 'we were just having fun'? If you want to have a snow ball fight with friends or whomever that is fine. Otherwise either don't throw ice, snow, whatever or deal with the consequences.

If you had a vagina, I'd say refer to azaghal1981's post. But since you don't, repalce vagina with ass.

^ We now know which side of the hill that ol' man Rat Bastard resides on. (I love you Rat but I can't agree with you on this.)
My biggest problem with his statement is that 'snowball' is on that list.
"Okay, Snowball Sylvia. Meet your new cellmate, Crazy Mary. She's a real refined sort. She killed her entire family and served them up to the Ladies Guild."
-
I'm always up for a good snowball fight. But know your limits. Don't throw anything at cars or people who are not involved. That's not breaking up a good time, it's ruining one by acting foolish. The fact that they are being charged with felonies is pretty ridiculous though.
-
^Well said.
-
The reason it's a felony is because they actually THREW A SNOWBALL AT A COP. That's assaulting a police officer. How fucking stupid do you have to be to do that?
-
(Putting this in here instead of in the Onion thread just to keep the snow stories together.)
Can't say that this guy shouldn't be reprimanded in some way, but I've got to admit that there is a side of me that wishes this guy were my neighbor. Kind of a local rogue hero of sorts.
"Police say man stole front loader to plow driveways (http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/howard/bal-plow-theft0210,0,62361.story?track=rss)
A Columbia man has been arrested after police say he stole a front loader and used it to clear driveways.
A Caterpillar skid steer loader was reported stolen sometime between Friday and Monday from a parking garage on U.S. 1 and Mission Road in Jessup, Howard County police said. The vehicle was equipped with LoJack, and on Tuesday morning officers traced it to a home in Laurel and found it parked in the driveway, police said.
The homeowners said a friend had left it there after clearing their driveway, and police worked to track the man down.
David Earl Bryant, 40, of the 9600 block of Hingston Downs has been charged with felony theft, theft, motor vehicle theft, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and removing or defacing a VIN number. Electronic court records show Bryant was released on his own recognizance and he did not appear to have a prior criminal record in Maryland."

UNDERCOVER
How do you know if she knew he was a cop?
-
Um... because they were uniformed cops, they were not undercover. They were regular cops, in patrol cars, flashing lights and all, responding to a complaint made by a resident of the neighborhood.
And if the neighborhood residents are awake and calling 911 at 2am, that kind of undermines the "harmless fun" argument also.
Seriously, only a lifetime of mom and dad bailing you out of life's tricky situations would lead you to believe you can throw shit at uniformed cops with impunity.
-
Having only the article to go by, there is nothing stating that they were uniformed but they did say the car was unmarked which are usually used by plain clothed detectives and other non-uniformed officers. Maybe you know something not stated.
If she knowingly threw it at a uniformed cop, than that was pretty damn dumb on her part but to charge her with a felony is taking things too far. If any charges should be placed, they should be in the misdemeanor range. Misdemeanors are not a slap on the wrist unless you've actually done something much more heinious.
-
There are more details on DCist.com. The cars were marked -- if you read something about an unmarked, it is likely from the earlier incident, in December.
Not knowing the law in detail, but I am guessing assaulting a police officer is a felony no matter what.
-
Come on lets call a spade a spade: DC COPS ARE PRICKS!
I don't ever want to be agreeing with them.
-
And since we're calling a spade a spade, this will never be a felony charge. With no outstanding warrants (or series of previous arrests) this will be pled down to a misdemeanor and sentenced to community service. It will take the cops longer to do the paperwork then it will to do the community service - ridiculous waste of taxpayer money.
-
Vansmack, you left out "and because of the efforts of the expensive lawyers her parents will get her."
Apparently she does have a history of prior arrests though. From the inevitable Facebook fan page that has sprung up:
"Maria, I hope you are OK, I am thinking of you!! You are so brave, having been arrested so many times for bullshit reasons!!!"
-
I can't believe I agree completely with Doctor Doom (well, minus the wealth bashing). I'm sure, whatever the outcome of the trial, that idiot won't throw a snowball at someone who doesn't want to be in a snowball fight again. Only sad thing is that the police have to teach people the class and civility the rest of us were taught in our exclusive pre-K classes.
-
i like it when people are taught lessons in life. life is good like that. it teaches you where others have failed.
-
Vansmack, you left out "and because of the efforts of the expensive lawyers her parents will get her."
I don't think so. Even a decent Public Defender can get this pleaded down to a misdemeanor - District Attorney's are not likely to push for felony here given the circumstances - again assuming there's not a long list of priors.
-
I can't believe I agree completely with Doctor Doom (well, minus the wealth bashing).
I can put your mind at ease -- I have nothing against wealth, I just think it's worth pointing out that the type of people who scream "oppression" loudest are usually society's most privileged. You can bet that if a cop arrested a kid for snowballing in the neighboring housing projects, there wouldn't be multiple blogs going on about it and a Facebook fan page set up.
-
There would be a bad-ass mural tagged on a neighborhood wall, though.

And as I pointed out a thousand times in Julian's America, the reason for this phenomenon is that when something bad happens to the upper class, the other 90% of the population often acts like they had it coming. Robin Hood, hero or terrorist?

And that's probably why I don't read "Julian's America." I would argue that if you throw stuff at cops, you *do* have it coming.

No, I agree with you on this. This "presumably" rich person (and I'm more willing to bet it's a hipster doofus then an actual trust fund kid, just offhand) had it coming. But all rich people do not.

Hipster doofi, almost by definition, come from wealth. It takes money to live in the city, ride a fixie, sit at a cafe with your Macbook, and work part time at a vegan laundromat. Maybe living in a group house in the city was cheap 30 years ago, but those days are long gone.

Oh no no no no. I can't even begin to tell you what's wrong with that characterization. We'll get into it tomorrow, I'm going home now.

Hey, folks! Feeling a little blue and even a bit anti-climatic now that the Snowpocalypse Pt.II has departed?
Never fear. Keep a look out for on or about Feb. 15th and Feb. 19th.
Just in case, you know. ;)

You're an idiot. The fact she's being charged with a felony instead of a misdemeanor is going to cost her thousands, that's in FOUR FUCKING FIGURES, of dollars more in legal fees. So, it really doesn't matter if the charge is going to get knocked down or not because SHE'S GONNA PAY FOR IT.
Dumbfuck.
-
Didn't any of you dipshits watch the local news coverage of the storm? Of course not, you were all out throwing snowballs at unwilling participants, just to have a little fun. The news coverage of the snowball felching in Dupont Circle showed moving vehicles being PLASTERED with snowballs left and right. The reporters who were reporting from Dupont were getting ASSAULTED with snowballs. And not just in the back, but in the fucking head! Where the fuck were the police here?
Seriously, if it were a bunch of minorities, they'd be busting out the non-lethal weapons and tear gas to break it up, but since it's a bunch of yuppie white kids, the police waste taxpayers' money "observing" the situation.
You people make me fucking sick.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.

You're an idiot.
Dumbfuck.
First off, azaghal1981 called you names, not me, so back the fuck off and show me AT LEAST the respect I've shown you.
Second, allow me to refer you to a case known as Gideon vs Wainwright (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gideon_v._Wainwright) where the US Supreme Court says money will never be an object when it comes to somebody's defense. The accused always has the opportunity to use a court appointed attorney FREE OF CHARGE. I'm not saying she should take this approach, but it's available to her.
Thirdly, the fact that the accused CAN be charged of a felony does not mean that the accused WILL be charged of a felony, but as we know in this case, Maria Lewis was charged with a felony. That does not preclude any District Attorney from pleaing the case down with her counsel to a misdemeanor to (1) avoid trial, or (2) due to lack of sufficient evidence [good luck proving she threw it] or (3) to avoid public outcry if the punishment does not fit the crime.
And lastly, I said nothing about her out of pocket expenses in this case in the post of mine that you quoted. I did, however, note that the DC taxpayer will be on the hook for a lot (or (1) the cops time,(2) the book officer/processing time (3) the DA's time and even perhaps (4) the Public Defenders time). I'm not even going out on a limb here by saying that those costs will far out weigh the costs incurred by Maria Lewis.
I'm not in DC so someone feel free to post what the final outcome of this case is, I'd love to see it. And I'm taking all bets that Maria Lewis will not serve 1 year in jail (a Felony) for this.
-
So Smacky, you're saying that there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of the felony charge sticking?
-
So Smacky, you're saying that there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of the felony charge sticking?
Nice. So much so, that I'm willing to wager on it.
And since Mankie's no longer around to point out that I have been wrong on legal issues before, I will remind folks that I once told Jag that Ireland would not forgoe taxing artists and their creations while the Irish economy was so bad and almost 10 years later I'm still wrong and Jag is still right. But yeah, that's what I'm saying, but not as cleverly as you...

I wish we had something to clear the roads in my neighborhood. It's been a week, and streets need some major snow removal.
-
TMUL, I don't like the snowballers either, but you're sounding a little strident there, bub.
Anyway, the news is that the prosecutor decided to charge this as a misdemeanor. According to one blog I read, and I have no idea if this is based in fact or not, this means that among other things she can be tried in front of a judge, rather than a jury. It makes it easier to get a conviction.
Regardless of outcome, she already had to do a couple of nights in jail, and that was deserved. I think at most she'll get community service and a fine, also deserved too. So yes, "snowball justice has been achieved."
-
I think being charged with a felony is a bit much, but what idiot is stupid enough to throw a snowball, or anything for that matter, at a cop. I'm not saying she deserves a year in prison, but honestly, why would you do something so colossally stupid? You do realize that spitting on someone is considered a physical assault in the eyes of the law? I recon throwing a snowball/iceball at a cop would be considered assaulting a police officer. I say fine her and make her do some community service.
-
i hope obama wises up and tries her in a military court
-
Waterboard a confession out her, then send her to Siberia.
-
No way.
Video tape her recording a confession that she's reading line by line of a piece of paper, broadcast it on the internet calling for Jihad, then sick Jack Bauer on her accusers....
-
now we're talking some serious justice
