Title: Belle and Sebastian thread
Post by: Thousand Made-Up Loves on June 04, 2010, 10:20:13 am
Tickets went on sale today at 10am, I expected less than a stellar turn out because a tour was just announced on Tuesday and ticket on sale date was announced late Wednesday. I got in at 10am and got a pair of fifth row seats on the floor (:woohoo:). Pairs are going all around the "bowl" seating now, and it's all over the place, three rows up on the right. Eight rows up looking at the stage from the other side of the venue, box 18, section C row K, etc.

Fees are $14 per ticket  ::)

Managed to grab ORCH, row C, seat 125.  Not too bad.

I must be itching for shows...that was a pricey ticket!

y'all did better than me, i ended up with center orch row M.  for some reason the TM page didn't refresh for me until about 10:01.  the delay probably explains why i didn't get better seats, not that i'm unhappy with 12th row.

Does anyone else feel like Stuart is like Thom Yorke's super happy alter ego?

I think they have a very similar kind of energy and persona live, except that Stuart is super happy and Thom is, well, not.

You should be writing for NME.

Well, they only tour every four years. That was my justification.

Another thing.  Why would anyone pay to get the tickets instantly via pdf when you can get them mailed to you for free?   It seems like it is costing Ticketmaster a lot more money to mail them to you anyway.

i got a pair.  sound like nkotb got a single.

not sure that mailing is "a lot more money".  TicketFast = a lot of infrastructure (servers, integration with a person's online account, extra databases, etc) + TM is probably paying for the rights to license the technology from someone, i doubt they developed TicketFast.

i also suspect some marketing genius thought "print-at-home = convenience + immediate gratification, so people will pay extra for that!", i.e. the pricing has nothing to do with cost.

I got mine today at the box office and saved massive on service charges. Seems for the W'burg show - 1/2 the tix sold out in pre-sale and its expected by end of the weekend to sell out. Did this show totally sell out?? Also - thankfully ours is all GA!

One week until B&S at Constitution Hall, nimrods. New album is streaming at NPR http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130212728 (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130212728). Will listen to it tonight after Happy Hour. The band's website hasn't been updating setlists, but the setlist from the Vegas Matador show looked pretty good.

Pretty pumped...

Sure, the new album might be their worst. But it still has 4-5 really excellent songs on it. And that won't affect their live show much at all, since they'll most likely only play the good ones and B + S have never been ones to throw their whole new record at an audience. They like to give the people what they want.

Plus, these guys've already released a normal career's-worth of good output and Stuart has near-infinite charm.

Have you tried requesting it via their Q + A thing on their website? When I asked 'em a question sometime way back they replied.

Really? I've seen that link on their site, but I never really considered it. Friend of mine and I came to the conclusion that the song was so instrumentally extravagant that it would be extremely difficult to translate well live. Note: I have no experience in music or bands. Just a gut feeling.

I'd have to ask about the Rollercoaster Ride, too. It's a damn shame they don't EVER play that. EVER. I might have to start a thread on that.

Would be epic to hear String Jean Bean too.

depends on the show.  i've been to some where drinks were allowed in the hall, but more often than not drinks aren't allowed in.  congrarating by entrances is only a partial solution, as DAR has doors that remain closed unless someone is entering or exiting the hall (i.e. there are no open doorways that allow unblocked viewing & listening).

So what do you guys think? Doors at 7, Versus at 7:30, B&S by 8:30?

that was a fuckin' blast.  it was my first time seeing belle & seb, wasn't expecting to have that much fun.  one needs a certain taste/tolerance for saccharin, 'cause the band served it up perfectly.  through someone's generosity we were upgraded to fifth row just off the center aisle - awesome!  i thought the crowd was a tad lame at times, but one can only expect so much given the music.  the first 4 people pulled up on stage were an embarrassment.

highlight for me was the two girls who held up the "elope with us" sign during the encore.  first off they were cute as buttons, and the glow that they had on their faces when stuart called them over to the stage, held up their sign, then walked through the crowd with them was just damn priceless.  B&S put you in such a good mood, the whole experience was infectious.

roll call tonight - i spoke with:
bearman
nkotb
joe m
relaxer
ms & mr p
eros
bnyce0 (old school!)

didn't get to meet TMUL, but moral of the story: the majority of this board is TWEE AS FUCK.

B&S put you in such a good mood, the whole experience was infectious.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The entire show was a joyous occasion. I remain in constant awe of how awesome Stuart is. He totally captivates an audience. Freaking walking around the venue (on a balance beam, it seemed) throwing out foam footballs with other members. I was pissed at first because he took out a Dallas-colored silver football, but I realized they weren't all silver. The rapport between Stuart and the rest of the band is great as well. Many bands, pass on the banter. But B&S banter is always good.

Also major props for Stuart bringing up taxation without representation. And the new songs were great as well.

I've noticed no one has said anything bad about the sound. I thought it was great.

Also major props for Stuart bringing up taxation without representation.

it was at this point the the crowd's lack of energy started to come through.  i got the impression stuart was hoping that his statement on taxation without representation would energize the crowd, get some hometown energy or pride going, but it was met with relative indifference.  saying "how 'bout dem redskins?!?" probably would have gotten more of a reaction  ::)  damn city of transients...

I've noticed no one has said anything bad about the sound. I thought it was great.

hopefully we can put this one to bed now.  DAR, in the right hands, sounds just fine if you're in the front half of the hall (not sure about the rest, i never see shows from back there :))

and we were allowed to bring drinks to our seats tonight - woohoo!  i really think that decision depends on the crowd.  tonight's was pretty sedate.

I can't really rate B+S shows against other shows. Not that they're better than everything else, but they make me feel so goddamned good. Just shockingly enjoyable.

Great setlist, Sinister bitches gonna bitch.

Also, two lame clapping dudes onstage deserve the clap/a flogging.

Lord Anthony is just an incredible song. Classic B&S song. Sounds so wimsy, but its core is very deep and raw.

Also, the new version of Piazza sucks. Like when Pearl Jam did the new Jeremy. The whole point is just Stuart, guitar and listeners (and a little Stuart). IN-TI-MATE.

Completely agree on all counts....I didn't plan to go, but pulled up a pair in section B, row 3 on a whim about two weeks ago. I am so glad I did. That was the most fun I have had at a regular show in a long time. (I did have a great time at Freefest, but that was all-day-long fun, not just the band.)

Just want to echo what everyone else has said, what a great time.  Stuart is a great showman.  Nice to run into sweetcell as well.  No "Your Cover's Blown" and only 1 song from "Life Pursuit" (which I think is a great record), but that's the way it goes.

I did think it was weird that there were several times between songs where the hall was dead silent (outside of the tools shouting song requests).

Sweetcell and NKOTB, thanks for saying hi! I'm really glad that I had a chance to finally meet in person. Thatguy, it's always great to chat with you. You're awesome, we love you.

I thought the show started off kind of slow at first...agreed with the comments that the audience was a little lame, but everyone warmed up after a while. Kind of reminds me of last time I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl, which started off as a PERFORMANCE...polite clapping, no chatter between songs, everyone in their seats. By the end, people went apeshit and were dancing and charging for the stage. It was hilarious.

Stuart is a total showman...definitely some good surprises in the setlist. Also agreed on the lame people that got pulled up on stage, they looked like they had absolutely no idea what to do once they were up there. When a band as dorky as Belle and Sebastian still manages to be cool, the regular dorks really don't stand a chance. Highlights were when my buddy I was with got a signed football because it was his birthday (thanks to Sarah) and when hearing those Elopement girls squeal when Stuart went down the center aisle with them. So cute. Great show.

There is no other rock band in the world in which Stevie Jackson could be a member. Seriously, some people just end up in an ideal environment for success, and Stevie did just that.

I wonder how many relatives and long-time neighbor/friends say to themselves "Can y'believe lil Stevie went off and became a rock star now? Little sensitive Stevie, what with the asthma and the cardigans and love for ducklins! In a rock and roll band!"

indeed.  i was holding my camera way out to the left 'cause i wanted a slightly more side-angle shot, in reality i was sitting much close to center than the pic seems to imply (4 seats in from the center aisle, 5th or 6th row).  looking straight on, i was between sarah and stuart.

still buzzing from last night.

i think the show was more "fun" than "great" but that's the kind of band B&S is these days. you can complain about setlist for any show they do because they have such a deep catalog. i didn't mind the lack of "sinister" songs, but the new songs are pretty flat. "lord anthony" was especially pretty poignant given some recent events. "arab strap" (except those lame dancers)/"sleep the clock around" was a great back-to-back.

On the other hand, if you've been keeping up with their recent setlists, our setlist was pretty predictable. I'd say Dirty Dream No. 2 and I Fought in a War were the only two real surprises as they hadn't been playing either lately.

my first belle and sebastian show. i'm not really that familiar with b+s but its one of mr. p's favorite bands - really easy to have a good time at the show and a really nice little bright spot on the day.

and, as always, good to see sweetcell and thatguy.
