loudest show i've experienced at the 930: iggy and the stooges. runners-up: LCDSS.
et tu?
-
Dinosaur Jr.
Black Pus
The most recent Mogwai show
That last BRMC show was unnecessarily loud and muddy.
I do remember the hi's being uncomfortably loud at that LCDSS show.
-
Dinosaur Jr.
which time? or every time?
and indeed, the highs were slicing my head off at the LCD show. really distorted and piercing.
-
Dead Meadow opening for Fugazi many years back. It was awesome.
-
I've only caught them at the club once (09).
The 2nd Black Pus set there when he opened for ratatat was the funniest loud show experience. The front row consisted of myself (wanted a good spot for Black Pus) and HS kids probably at their first show. Needless to say, they were not equipped with the proper ear protection. Chippendale comes out and hits something that causes some of the highest shards of feedback I ever heard to ring out throughout the room. I turned to one of the kids and said "oh yeah...you may have wanted to bring earplugs." Chippendale then proceeds to do irreparable damage to their hearing for 30 minutes almost non-stop. As agonizing as it must have been, they did stand there and take it.
That Ratatat set was unnecessarily loud as well. And it sucked. I think I left 15 minutes in.

I was at both. LCDSS louder. But Dream Syndicate (@ F St.) loudest.
-
The first Animal Collective show at the club was piercing.
I can still hear those "Peace Bone" shrieks now.
-
That last BRMC show was unnecessarily loud and muddy.
Seconded. I haven't been to enough shows at the club to compare, but BRMC's recent show in April was fucking loud. I've only felt ear pain during three shows in my life, and this was one of them (others: Iron Maiden at MPP standing next to the speakers in the pit; Pantera in Hampton, VA in 1998).
-
Placebo ... maybe 8 years ago or so. It was a cheap show, as I recall. I could handle only about 3 songs.
-
Twilight Sad (opening for Mono) were unnecessarily loud you couldn't make out the songs they were playing.
The loudest show I've enjoyed was the last Mogwai show.
-
That Twilight Sad set was a mess.
Possibly the ugliest thing I've ever heard come out of the club's PA.
-
I find a lot of "IT" brit bands to be un-necessarily loud, Cooper Temple Clause was one of the most painful...
-
melvins this year, that was evil
-
Iggy's last solo show at the club was brutal in the best way possible. I remember being afraid for my hearing the drummer sat at his kit and hit the kick drum once. And that JSBX show when the new club first opened was insane too. I remember calling a friend three days later to make sure I wasn't the only one with ringing ears.
I still don't think i've ever experienced anything like Mogwai at the Ottobar, though. It was like that Memorex ad.
-
Hmmm, several:
Garbage. The guy was mixing from a semi in the parking lot. Not even in the same room. I was there the second night and it was too loud, but I was told it was quieter than night one.
Love and Rockets, forget which tour (maybe Hot Trip to Heaven). When they would hit a bass note, all other sounds were just "lost", nothing else got through.
Then there was the Prodigy:

-
Fugazi
Mogwai
-
I was in the 2nd row during the Melvins and found that pretty tame.
And yeah, Prodigy had unnecessary volume. And I forgot my earplugs.
Spent most of that night in the backbar.
-
A friend tried to tape that Mogwai Ottobar show and told me that it came out as one long block of distortion. He's got great mics that can withstand just about anything, too.
-
I'd have to go with BRMC in April '10 and Iggy and the Stooges in April '07. Something about April?
-
At the old club I saw Helmet and Jawbox...that was insanely loud. Believe it or not, Oasis' volume at the old club show was pretty insane too. They had so many amps on stage that you couldn't see Tony McCarroll behind the drum kit. If you were near the stage, you were blasted away.
At the new club, I'd say the loudest shows have been the Prodigy (even in 1998 the volume and bass was just insane), Ministry in '04 (my ears were slightly ringing the next day even WITH ear plugs in).
I've seen loads of other shows that were beyond loud (Sugar, Dinosaur Jr., Beastie Boys w/L7 come to mind), just not at the club.
-
I wonder how MBV at the club in '92 compared to the volume on their last tour.
Anyone?

From what I understand, the volume intensity was pretty comparable, the thing was the sound system they used on the last tour provided cleaner low end and less shrill highs. So in a sense, just a more balance, better-sounding show but still with the rocket fuel-punch.
-
I never understood the preoccupation with volume. It's like a macho thing. HOW MUCH CAN YOU TAKE?!?!? There's nothing sadder than a deaf thirty year-old.
It's seems like the bands are overcompensating for two things: 1.) The obvious. 2.) The band not being that good. And, YES, I'm including Iggy and the Stooges and LCD in that group. That reissue of "Raw Power" is quite possibly the shittiest sounding CD I've ever heard.

I can't remember all right now, but I swear they used to be louder before the year 2000. ;)
I do remember most of you commented on the last BRMC (already mentioned) and for others, the last Twilight Singers' show (plus the smokiest I also heard; before the club when to non)
-
Prodigy in 1998. I just remember feeling my clothes vibrating on me.
IIRC, it was also the same night the Caps got swept in the Stanley Cup finals.
-
And the winner is: Motörhead (in a landslide of brain melting, ear splitting thunder)
-
My loudest show at the club was the most recent Prodigy gig. Even with my -25db earplugs and being in the back of the club, it was pretty brutal.
-
For me personally it was definintely The Raconteurs. I went both nights last time they came and the first night was SO loud, i walked and realized how loud it was because everrryyything was so muffled. The 2nd night wasn't as bad until Jack played his screechy guitar, but that could have been because my ears were pulvarized the night before.

That too is my loudest. I haven't been to a lot of shows at the club that were ear shattering to compare to but The Prodigy were pretty loud ;D
-
Predicting that Boris will rank up there.
-
Shit...you just reminded me that I have to miss them...again. I swear, some bands I'm just never meant to catch live. Thankfully I managed that Ottobar show a few years back, but still...they've been around half a dozen times since then it seems, and I've missed every single one.
Predicting that Boris will rank up there.

Different ways to look at it, J Mascis said it was as a drummer to try and get that visceral feel of drumming in guitar. Others it is just deafness, others sadism (when the engineer wears ear protection, that is just wrong), some it is just to get over the stage volume.
Also it is just fun to do once in a while.
-
This wasn't at the club but the MBV in Richmond was amazing. My ears rang for days and in a good way since it was so awesome ;D I saw them again at All Points West a few days later, but the show at the National was tops.
-
old club - Husker Du
new club- another vote for Motorhead
not at the club-Chemical Bros.
-
when brian comes out of retirement . . . he really comes . . . a lot. impressive.
-
Huh?
-
Oh walky is just being walky ;D
-
whatever band opened for Jesus and Mary Chain back in 1985. They used saws on their guitars and they had ear plugs on. They were filming the audiences reaction. Seems like it was just a bunch of local guys who decided to annoy the audience.

motorhead

This was the same year as a very loud Ministry Show, actually the following night!
-
melvins this year, that was evil
Seriously? If anything, I thought it was too quiet.
-
^And the crowd was fucking lame.
-
Ministry... hell they are just the loudest band no matter where they friggin play...
-

Can't wait for that show...

I cannot believe no one has mentioned The Deftones
-
There was nothing alarmingly loud about them when they played here.

Years back Hatebreed played on Easter sunday. They had The Crystal Method's engineer mixing them. I mixed the first three bands, and I thought it was loud. He came and showed me a whole new level of loud, even with tired ears and ear plugs, he was hurting me.

Hatebreed or Hatebeak? Cuz that parrot can shred!

I've seen them a half dozen times. Five (98-04) were not too loud; the other (2000) was punishing. Of course their shows are hit-or-miss as well.
-
Buzzcocks at the old club.
-

Maybe the loud show I attended of theirs was at the Norva. At my age and all the chemical experimentation I did in the 60s/70s, details sometimes escape me.
-
Is no one going to mention that pummeling Iron & Wine show?!?! All of that bass and distortion and white noise...totally killer.
-
Some of those mentioned -- Raconteurs, BRMC, Stooges -- were loud alright, but any of the Dino Jr. shows I've been to were louder. I always bring my ear plugs for J, even though I'm prolly gonna be deaf soon anyway.
-
Dino shows are some of the loudest for sure but they're also well mixed/balanced.
That BRMC was anything but.
-

any mogwai show. . .
the show that was probably the most damaging to my hearing was sugar "file under easy listening" tour at liberty lunch in austin. halfway through the set i couldn't tell what songs they were playing anymore. . .
-
Sugar, April 30th, 1993...the Beaster tour at the Aragon Ballroom. I actually think that was louder at many moments than My Bloody Valentine a couple years ago. I'll never forget that wall of a PA they had. Very intimidating. When they started "the Act We Act" I immediately could feel it slam all of the organs in my body. That's pretty much the definition of "loud".
-

Exactly :) I thought they sounded fantastic for the 2004 show when they played for 2 1/2 hours.
-
I think it's safe to say one of the loudest shows NOT at the club would go to Jucifer.
-
they're up there...
it's fun not wearing earplugs at their shows...

-
Another one for the unnecessarily loud column:
I caught a couple (well parts of a couple) of the thievery shows in 2009. The first one sounded fine but the 2nd was one of the bassiest mudfests I've ever heard.
-
There was a J Mascis + Fog show at the BC in the late 90s that was really loud
But the one that sticks in my head the most is the Soundtrack of Our Lives show for their 'Behind the Music' album.
I've seen Motorhead twice at the club and haven't been struck by it being overly loud.
-
the j show at black cat sticks out so wonderful in my mind. the lone star j on stage proving his worth without "the one who sould not be spoken" and yes, very loud. i somehow dragged my partner to it, who never goes to concerts with me, thinks my taste in music should have a 'dis' in front of it, hates going into dc, and saw the entire evening as "interesting." he couldn't hear correctly the next morning, thought the bar's beer lines needed cleaning . . . and couldn't understand for the life of him why j plus that loud equals the way it has to be.
-
Tuesday is in the top 10 loudest for me. All three bands were devastatingly loud but the mix was nice and crisp for each.
-
Yes, that Boris show was devastatingly loud and beautiful...........

I saw J. Mascis and the Fog probably the day after at Alley Katz in Richmond. It was brutally loud as well and about half the size of the black cat. My ears suffered for quite a while after that one.
-
I thought that Boris show was the least loud they have been. Hah.
A few loud ones that stick out to me are The Locust when they opened for Fantomas, it was like a wall of jack hammers hitting you.
Deftones usually were pretty loud too.
also the Plea for Peace-Take Action tour way back when with the Dillinger Escape Plan was brutally loud.
-
I found that Boris show way louder than the BC shows and the Knitting Factory show from early '08.
And obviously, much clearer than the Black Cat shows.
I never felt low end in the pit of my stomach like that at the Black Cat.
-
Alcian Blue used to be pretty devastatingly loud, but they were never at the Club. BC backstage, Galaxy Hut, Warehouse, Velvet.
-
SVI continues the Alcian Blue tradition. I absolutely can not take out my ear plugs when i watch them play (which is 6 or so times a year, man they play a shit ton of area shows.)
None at the club though (not that I complain, i love the smaller venues way more.)
-
I didn't think the Boris show was that loud either, with maybe the exceptional droney end with the lead singer Takeshi ripping out his Sunn amps...
Still doesn't beat the Ministry show I saw at the club years ago...
-
The first night of Garbage in April '05...punishingly loud, but also crysal clear...the second night was noticeably softer...
Loudest of all time would have to be Sugar at Hammerjack's, November of '94...ears were ringin for 3 days after that...
-

I was there. Plenty loud, maybe top 10. What I remember more was the girl in the extraordinarily well-fitted white turtleneck on the catwalk above the rear of the stage.
Another loud one: Neil Young and Crazy Horse in '91 at the Capital Centre w/ Sonic Youth and Social Distortion. That was such a killer line-up I thought I'd type it again:
Neil Young
Sonic Youth
Social D
