I was in the 2nd row during the Melvins and found that pretty tame.

And yeah, Prodigy had unnecessary volume. And I forgot my earplugs.
Spent most of that night in the backbar.

A friend tried to tape that Mogwai Ottobar show and told me that it came out as one long block of distortion. He's got great mics that can withstand just about anything, too.

I'd have to go with BRMC in April '10 and Iggy and the Stooges in April '07.  Something about April?

At the old club I saw Helmet and Jawbox...that was insanely loud. Believe it or not, Oasis' volume at the old club show was pretty insane too. They had so many amps on stage that you couldn't see Tony McCarroll behind the drum kit. If you were near the stage, you were blasted away.

At the new club, I'd say the loudest shows have been the Prodigy (even in 1998 the volume and bass was just insane), Ministry in '04 (my ears were slightly ringing the next day even WITH ear plugs in).

I've seen loads of other shows that were beyond loud (Sugar, Dinosaur Jr., Beastie Boys w/L7 come to mind), just not at the club.

From what I understand, the volume intensity was pretty comparable, the thing was the sound system they used on the last tour provided cleaner low end and less shrill highs. So in a sense, just a more balance, better-sounding show but still with the rocket fuel-punch.

I never understood the preoccupation with volume.  It's like a macho thing.  HOW MUCH CAN YOU TAKE?!?!?  There's nothing sadder than a deaf thirty year-old.

It's seems like the bands are overcompensating for two things:  1.) The obvious.  2.) The band not being that good.  And, YES, I'm including Iggy and the Stooges and LCD in that group.   That reissue of "Raw Power" is quite possibly the shittiest sounding CD I've ever heard.

I can't remember all right now, but I swear they used to be louder before the year 2000.
I do remember most of you commented on the last BRMC (already mentioned) and for others, the last Twilight Singers' show (plus the smokiest I also heard; before the club when to non)

Prodigy in 1998.  I just remember feeling my clothes vibrating on me.

IIRC, it was also the same night the Caps got swept in the Stanley Cup finals.

My loudest show at the club was the most recent Prodigy gig.  Even with my -25db earplugs and being in the back of the club, it was pretty brutal.

For me personally it was definintely The Raconteurs. I went both nights last time they came and the first night was SO loud, i walked and realized how loud it was because everrryyything was so muffled. The 2nd night wasn't as bad until Jack played his screechy guitar, but that could have been because my ears were pulvarized the night before.

That too is my loudest.  I haven't been to a lot of shows at the club that were ear shattering to compare to but The Prodigy were pretty loud
