So, I have a co-worker who's very concerned about parking for U2 next week. Apparently the parking that was on sale is gone, but you can get parking through ticketsale websites like stubhub. Parking is $50-90.
Is this necessary? Are they going to RUN OUT of parking? Is there a time I should plan to get there?
I've never been to a show at this stadium, and I have to say my co-worker is very preoccupied with this!
Any tips would be great. THANKS
-
Plenty of parking garages in the area.
-
I imagine all the parking lots near the vicinity of the stadium will be occupied since there will be 70,000 of you?
here's what I would do if I were preoccupied with parking:
park in a parking lot somewhere near the U of Baltimore/Mt. Royal light rail stop....then take the light rail to Hamburg Street (the stop nearest to M&T).
or if you're coming from DC, then just park at BWI then take the light rail to the same stop.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BaltimoreLightRail.svg
-
park in Fells Point and walk
-
Tell your coworker that the only thing that will be more bloated than the parking lot is Bono's ego.
-
Wait....parking is $50-$90? How much are the bloody tickets for the show?
-
I was under the impression that parking was included with the ticket pricing. You should all be aware that Conway Street is currently closed for preparations for the Baltimore Grand Prix. It's causing alot of backup on 395. The best way to get to the parking lots is to take the Russel Street exit.
But, there are PLENTY of parking garages in the city. And you could park in the garages in Fells and walk, but it will be a long walk.
We are going up early in the afternoon and parking at our hotel. Just didn't feel like dealing with the traffic mess this time.
-
And if you do decide to go in the afternoon, this seems like a fine place to pass the time
http://alewifebaltimore.com/
There was a living social deal for it yesterday and they do accept reservations, even for lunch.
-
Apparently parking is NOT included in tickets, and was sold separately on TM, but is sold out.
-
PS, K8teebug, THANKS for the traffic advisory!!!
-
don't think it will be a problem in Baltimore but apparently some people did not make it to the Oakland show....see comments

I'm not sure about the schedule for the MARC trains but do make sure that they are running after the show. Seems that was the issue at one time for evening shows in Baltimore. Of course, I don't know the times of this concert either.
You could even consider checking out the Light Rail or the Subway lines and spend the afternoon in some place not far from one of their Park And Rides. Maybe lunch and browse around in either Hampden, Towson, Hunt Valley or some other area of interest. (Not that there are lots of them alone these very limited lines.) Hampden might be fun for lunch and Hon watching. There's also a record store somewhere in Hampden that a few people around here said they liked. Then go over to one of the Park and Rides where, unlike super-gouging DC, it is FREE to park your car. I'm sure the schedules and area maps are online.
Or even just use one of the out of the city Park And Rides to park, take it downtown and hang around, then go off to the show. Again, do check the schedules. Between the two, I'd try to stick with the Light Rail over the Subway as the closer to the city areas are safer, both for hanging out in and leaving your car.
-
Light rail is right there. Stops at BWI and everywhere else.
-
I have 2 extra tickets for the show next week if anyone is interested. Section 246.
-
I am taking the Marc up to Camden years for the show. Staying overnight at BWI hotel as I convienently have a flight at 7 am the next morning.
-
Light rail is right there. Stops... everywhere...
Someone from Baltimore would never say that as it's nothing but a very one directional line going back and forth. Forget any side tracking into other areas. You'd have to take a bus which takes a ridiculous amount of time getting anywhere, if it even goes wherever else you would like to go. The Baltimore area mass transit system leaves a whole lot to be desired for the locals though the Light Rail will stop in enough areas for the poster's interests.
You might even consider using the BWI Park And Ride after spending an afternoon in Ellicott City lunching and browsing.
-
There are plenty of things to do in Fells Point. There's Soundgarden for record shopping and lots of bars for drinking. I would try to go early in the day and just hang out. That's what I'm going to do.

I seem to remember a Smashing Pumpkins thread that went on for 40 pages or something ridiculous.
Not that Smashing Pumpkins are overrated, because most critics and knowlegable music types would say that they suck. And they'd be right.

the can do things they can't do in smaller venues, like a 240-foot stage, limitation being both physical and financial. now whether a huge stage, lasers, 100+ foot screens, etc is something you want to see is a different question.
i saw the show 3 times last summer, and i was never more than 40 feet from the stage.
-
That's not something I (nor my wife) wish to see. Wouldn't matter who the band was.

But you can easily walk to Federal Hill which is about 5 blocks away. Lots of great restaurants and bars there. I trek to Soundgarden is not that bad, but even taking a taxi there is not that big a deal. But the light rail runs late, is right there at the stadium, and has easy parking. I have used it for many an event in the city.

Ever heard of the "Irish Curse"?
Hey!!! I didn't make it up so don't shoot the messenger.
Sweetcells mother knows the English have big cocks.
-
The Irish are always saying "oh grand grand grand grand" so I figured they were referring to their stuff.
-
Seriously, one time a guy gave me FIVE grands when I was checking into his hoteul
-
That is how you spell hoteul over there right?
Those foreigners have a word for everything!
-
Can't say that I know much at all about Irish men and what they are packing (or not) but it may well explain why so many of them have very high pitched speaking and singing voices. That was something I've always wondered about. Their voices, not the relationship to what's down below.

Back on Topic: the M&T Bank Stadium lots will open at 2 PM for all ye tailgoaters.

Forget it, I don't think I want to know.

Will light rail run fairly often? A friend thinks it will be overrun and not run very much, thereby being a nightmare.
Thanks!!

it's not WMATA :D

I remember seeing U2 during that Walmart tour at RFK and Bono got all pissie because the last metro left before their gig was supposed to end, including encore.
-
I remember seeing U2 at RFK on the Joshua Tree tour and Bono got all pissy cause he slipped and broke his collarbone.
-
I remember seeing U2 at RFK during the Zoo TV tour and he got all pissy because he couldn't get through to the Whitehouse on the phone.....
-
I remember seeing U2 one time but then I woke up and the nightmare was over!
-
Regardless of Rat Bastard's sentiments...great show last night. Personally I had no problem with parking or traffic. As with Ravens games, it usually is easy to get in and out of downtown stadium area (unlike the dump in Raljon).

This. Great setlist (opening with four in a row from Achtung Baby!) - the show has really evolved and improved since the last time it was here.
Yes, Bono's voice isn't what it used to be, but....

"[Glastonbury] is about a band being able to get up and play the music and there aren't bells and whistles, necessarily," drummer Larry Mullen Jr. tells BBC Radio 1. "That's a challenge for us and we've got something to prove."
gotta love an era (pink, lady gaga, u2) in music . . . when the music takes a back seat to the show.
-
Thought the show was great. I'm not a fan of stadium shows, but this is how you do it. I'd gotten rock star parking pass (Suite parking right outside entrance) so getting in was awesome. Getting out took a while, but the car was comfy, a.c. on and music good. And it was our own doing -- we took the time for potty break, etc.
But driving is what it is -- 2 hours from downtown DC to stadium, leaving at 4:15.
-
Having seem them twice I have to say, although don't consider myself a 'fan', they put on a damn good show. I went to RFK for both the zoo tv and shopping cart/walmart (aka piss take of USA) tour.
A friend got me the ticket because she's a huge fan and wanted someone to go with, and I have no shame in saying I'm glad I went.
My main issue with them has nothing to do with their musical talent. It's Bono's self righteious attitude, while at the same time tax-dodging like the hypocrit he is.

As far as I'm concerned, the beatles are in their own stratosphere. They can not be touched. They are pretty much my only sacred cow.

It was a great show, an amazing spectacle. A decent show.
The drums sounded bad, kick was often lost in the mix, and the snare always sounded like tearing newspaper, thin and meh. There was some harshness in the overall sound, so earplugs it was. Guitars sounded amazing, Bono sounded like Bono, bass was there.
But the lights and the stage setup was jaw droppingly huge. Impressive.
Still, several shows this year were better.
It was not an intimate concert, but a giant spectacle, and as that it was great.

My short review:
Bono's singing, in excellent voice, really loved the Italian part of Miss Sarajevo.
Mix, not so great, especially early.
Earplugs, awesome.
Visuals, insane.
Astronaut video cameo, I actually got goose-bumps.
Bono?s preaching, my eyes glazed over.
Song selection, of course I would have liked more early stuff and nothing from the NLOTH record, but overall, a solid B+.
Heat and Humidity, stifling.
Bladders of others in our row, teeny tiny. We had more traffic in and out of our row than: [fill in inappropriate punch-line here]
Parking and Travel, pretty damn easy.
Nancy Pelosi, bright blue ensemble that was totally inappropriate for the weather.
oh, and Flo and Mascho - did not work for me in this setting. Why can't the opener ever be mixed right?
-
Why can't the opener ever be mixed right?
because then they might outshine the main act, so they're mixed imperfectly on purpose... to keep them in their place.

AC DC is a great rock and roll band.. the Stones...
U2? I don't think anyone would say they are a great rock and roll band.. most comments about their concerts are about the frickin' claw.. or "they know how to do a stadium show".. there's hardly ever any comments about the performance..
Watching Let There Be Rock DVD right now... ACDC: thats a band that knows how to throw down.

They get away with Bono's BS b/c at the core they're unimpeachable . . .e.g. watching footage of Zoo TV today it looks completely retarded . . .but it was an amazing show . . .because the music fookin moves you, man . . .the spectacle is gravy

More like average run of the mill musicians. Anyone of them is 100% interchangeable with any one of numerous session guys for the given instrument. They would actually be better off if they got rid of Bone-Ho...

I think it's absoultely hilarious that someone over the age of 15 and under the age of 60 thinks ACDC "throws it down".

You've made it pretty clear that to you technical proficiency is more important than songcraft when it comes to grading musicians.
Is the ability to give you a quick efficient orgasm also more important than the storyline when it comes to grading your wife as well? :D

As much as I enjoy some of U2's music, I'd completely agree with the statement that they're not a truly GREAT rock'n'roll band. That being said, I'd say the most talented is the Edge. He's a decent guitarist, but no Hendrix or Clapton. Bono is a passable frontman. He's not an Iggy or Jagger. Or even a Joe Strummer. I'd put him on the level of a Daltrey, without a Who. I think they have great management, and honestly I think they DO bust their asses. A friend of mine toured with PJ Harvey when she opened for U2 and he told me that they relentlessly analyze their performances and setlists to try to see what works and what doesn't for each tour. I'd say for the most part, U2 cares more about their fans than the average band. And that's why people keep going back to them. They're 4 guys with a fair amount of talent who keep working to stay as popular as they are.
-
I went to the show and thought it was great. Had not seen them live since 1987 at Croke Park in Dublin (1st concert I ever went to). Obviously can't compare to a show in a more intimate venue but it was quite a spectacle.
I don't care for very much of what they have released post 1992 or so but the old songs still send shivers up my spine.
-
"Great" is too subjective but other than the Stones maybe, they're the biggest band rock and roll has seen. You can say they're average or just another band, but they've been at the very top of the rock industry for the past 25+ years. And if you look at what they sounded like in 1981, 1987, 1991, 1997, and 2000, those are enormous shifts in sound and vibe.
I'm not even much of a fan of them but to deny what they've accomplished and where they stand is retarded.

I once had a woman about 14-15 years older than me try to pick me up at the club with the line "I have really cute feet." Easily the most bizarre line I ever got. I also know a guy who would (maybe he still does? I have not asked lately) get off on the smell of women's feet. I also grew up with a girl who ended up in the "hmm, never saw that one coming" field of foot fetish pornstardom. Weird, yes but apparently common. Strange turns, threads take on this board.
