Title: 930 Survival Football 2011
Post by: vansmack on September 01, 2011, 07:15:50 pm
Yes, it?s that time again, where you can get some of your money back from the Proprietor of the 9:30 Club.

Hello 930 Board Member,

You have been invited to join vansmack's Private Group in Yahoo! Sports Survival Football.

In order to join the group, just go to Survival Football (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival), and click the "Join a Group" button. From there, enter the following information...

Group ID#: 20551
Password: ninethirty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The object of 930 Survival Football is to be the last Active member of the 930 Board.

In order to accomplish this goal, you must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week.

But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season.

If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated.

Our Group is limited to the first 50 people who sign up. There are two prize categories:

$5 - every participant must play the $5 version of the Survival Football pool, winner take all.

$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional ?High Stakes? $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. The decision must be made prior to week one.  To signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (eg, vansmack*) on the yahoo site.

Seth, GGW and the Good Doctor have also been known to do a $1000 pool.  I will leave it to them to challenge others.

Best of luck, and in case you need to be reminded about previous results?

Summer was over as soon as the Orioles fell out of contention.  Sometime mid-June.

Realistically speaking...early May.  Don't count on any summer next year.

Now, Now.  They were one game under .500 on June 10th, the day before the wheels fell off the cart.

Spring-to-fall next year, for sure.

A question for Seth and Dr. Anton - should we just tack the Big Boys pool onto vansmack's existing one?  Otherwise, I can set up a separate one.  Let me know.

vansmack*+ for $100 pool and $1000 pool.

to be clear: if you're in the $100 and/or $1000 pool, you still need to be part of $5 pool, right?  so people should be paypal'ing you $5, $105, $1005, or $1105?

Traditionally, the Big Boys have settled up in-person over a nice lunch on the winner's dime.

But yes, pay pal me $5, $105 or that plus fees if you're so inclined.

Can we wager on how long each of the pools lasts?  What's the money line on the big rollers one?  I say it doesn't go longer than five weeks.

If you want to pick the Thursday or Saturday game, then you must do so before kickoff of that game.  However, I've never thought it was wise to force folks to pick the Sunday games by 8:00PM ET on a Thursday.

This is how it has been for a few years now.  What is your concern?
Title: Re: 930 Survival Football 2011
Post by: sweetcell on September 07, 2011, 02:32:51 pm
ideally, we could pick any game that hasn't kicked off yet (or withing 15 mins of kickoff, whatever).  so if you space out on sunday and forget to make a selection (as some have been known to do here), you can still have a crack at the monday night game.  not sure if yahoo allows for such flexibility.

It does not.  The options are still:

(1) 5 minutes before the kickoff of the first game of the week, or
(2) 1:00 PM ET on Sunday

We changed it to option #2 two seasons ago (the first time they allowed the option).

No concern really.  I just couldn't remember what we had done in the past.  It looks like the issue two seasons ago was that one of the Yahoo pages indicated the deadline was 1:00PM Pacific Time.  That was an error and it was fixed.

Looks like we've got 21 people this year.
8 people in the $100 pool.
3 people in the big boys pool - Seth, GGW and Smackie

And dammit, I had Houston all week until Foster was out. Now they're drubbing the Colts with Ward and Slaton...

For real. I'm a Bengals fan, and today's game at Cleveland is one of the few I was confident they would win this season.

Why wasn't everyone else picking Houston? Without Manning, Indy is a 3-13 team at best.

WHY?!?!  Are you FROM Cincinnati?

When the team you picked is playing against a team with a rookie quarterback....and that rookie quarterback gets knocked out at half time...and BRUCE GRADKOWSKI(!) has to come in...and you STILL lose then that, my friend, is just not your year.

"Forget it, Jake.  It's Chinatown."

P.S.  The Colts should bring back Jeff George.  He's still available.  And as we know, the buzz word for this new decade is "closure."

The amount of research I put into this week was probably more than the last 4 years combined. I really didn't feel confident about this week at all.  I had Houston for most of the  week and then got nervous about Fosters leg.  I had KC and Cle at one point but ultimately settled on AZ once they hit 9.5 points.  Damn that was close....

Honestly, no surprise here.  After what Smackie felt was the toughest week one in our short survival pool history, it was followed up with the easiest week we may have ever had.  How easy?  I went 14-1 (Tennessee) in my pigskin pickem and picked up a cool $400.  Funny story though....there were three people at 13-1 with me, and we all have the NYG tonight.  I spent the entire PHI-ATL game thinking that I had picked PHI (which I had originally), only to find out after the game that on Friday, the line moved 1.5 points towards ATL and I had changed my pick to ALT.  I was the only one that had ATL and now that pool is free.

This might be the week to go with someone else, could be the way to win given that 99% of the people are going with one team. An upset and you could be the lone team standing.

I'm really liking Seattle this week.

I'm in a $20 loser pool with 250+ people.  Just about everybody picked Seattle to lose last week, but one guy picked Green Bay and was eliminated.  I looked at his pick the week before and he picked New Orleans (who faced GB).  I was astounded.  Maybe he thought it was a winners pool with a second chance?

I thought for sure more than one person would make the mistake last week.  I got crushed this week in everything BUT survival pools...45 people were eliminated in the "loser" pool I'm in, mostly thanks to Buffalo winning and the NYG (!).

This week is brutal. I'm looking at the Giants over the Seahawks or the Saints over the Panthers. I feel like both are traps though. Saints D is not there and the Panthers offense is INSANE. I just plain don't trust the Giants, but I think I might be overthinking these 2 games. All others are just too close for my comfort. Down to 3 in my pool and 1 is a HUGE big mouth.

a big mouth?  sorta like announcing your thoughts on who to bet on, on a public forum?
No, more like a braggart is what I meant. We have a forum and we all talk about who we're gonna pick. But it's all still a game so sometimes people don't trust others advice hahaha

I'm not so sure about that, at least for the $100 pool.

since everyone got eliminated in the $100, should we start another pool and continue on?  essentially give everyone a mulligan?

it's either that, or 5 people split $300 plus get their money back (i.e. get ~$160 each).

to my mind, in the mulligan scenario those who were previously out remain out.  they lost their bets prior to today's clusterf*ck, so that doesn't change.

I don't think that is fair to the other three.  Although we lasted longer than they did, we all met the same result.  It's probably fairer to distribute the money, and anyone who wants back in has to pay again.  Also, with a new league, how would previously picked teams be treated?  It could get messy unless Yahoo has the ability for the league moderator to go in and eliminate teams from each respective team's picks (and I am sure the moderator would be thrilled to do that . . . )

This is completely false.  There's  a big difference between week one and week three, let alone week five.

If anything, I'm willing to consider letting anyone who lost before week 4 to buy back in, but I'm not willing to wipe out their debt all together.

i understand your point of view, but i don't agree with it.  survival pools are all about lasting as long as possible, so you can't ignore the time dimension.  being bounced out in week 5 isn't the same as being bounced out in week 4... or week 1.

here's my analogy: you win the quarter-finals, but tie in the semi-finals.  it is decided that the teams in the semis should re-play to choose a winner.  do the quarter-finals losers get to play again?  no, they've already been eliminated.

I see two options. Either settle up the old $100 pool and start a new one. Or the final five let it roll. The latter would obviously exclude the 3 who went out prior to this week.

I would do double or nothing on the big boys* pool, assuming vansmack and seth are on board.

nope, interpreting our agreement on to the current situation leads to the conclusion that ending the pool and splitting the winnings is what's is expected, IMO.  the mulligan/final-five-let-it-roll scenario, while clearly more interesting, is the stretch here.  in this case, i like stretching.

also, i wanted to write "his hoyaness".

Eliminated in Week 4

SweetPicks* (NYG)
Hoya Paranoia*  (NYG)
ggw*+  (NYG)
vansmack*+  (NYG)
Shadrach  (NYG)
Child Please*  (NYG)
The Sonick Team  (NYG)
Crump's Brother  (NYG)
D.C. Snipers (PHI)

Picks

2 - New England
8 - New York giants
1 - Philadelphia Eagles

In the $5 Pool:

troy godamalu (godsshoesine)
no chance in hell

Still fighting on to be the overall pool winner.

In the $1000 Pool:

vansmack and ggw split Seth's $1000, though I suspect a resolution will be reached shortly to roll this debt over as all three parties have clearly demonstrated that they possess a small gambling problem.

In the $100 pool:

SweetPicks*, Hoya Paranoia*, ggw*, vansmack* and Child Please* all split the losses of Seth, Venerable and eros for a total of $60 each.  See my next post for your voting options.

This cracked me up to read back:

We lose people next week, guaranteed.

I'm not so sure about that, at least for the $100 pool.

OPTIONS FOR MEMBERS OF THE $100 POOL.

I am happy to roll this $300 pot over into another pool, but all parties must agree first, so please cast your vote either in this thread or send me an email on the following options.

A new pool:

(1) Will be closed to the 5 winners and wipe the slate clean on all teams picked (I can't change part 2).

Yes or No?

(2) Allow the three losers to buy back in for $100 and wipe the slate clean on all teams picked?  This would mean that if Seth, Venerable or eros were to win, you would forfeit the original $20 of the winner, but still get the original $40 from the 2 losers.  For example, if all three were to buy back in and Seth were to win, he would win $900 (counting his $200), and the remaining $200 is split among the 5 of us (or $40 each, reducing your debt to $60).

Yes or No?

You can vote "Yes" on both measures.  Both require 5 yes votes to pass.

#2 would trump #1 if both receive 5 votes
#1 can happen with 5 votes if #2 fails to receive 5 votes.
#1 not receiving 5 votes means we split the $300, and no new pool.

There is no #3 option to roll the $800 into a new pool and let the others buy back in, winner take all, because I'm already voting "no" on it.

No.  I can't change that on the site and it would be a nightmare to enforce further in the season.

Your commissioner is willing to do advanced banking skills, but he is not willing to check everybody's picks each week AFTER they're already up and be forced to eliminate someone if they incorrectly picked a team twice.

The concept of "double or nothing" is very easy among 2 people.  When you think of what's at stake, the risks are very simple - winner is risking 1, the loser is risking 2.

[EDIT]

I had written out an entire hypothesis explaining all of this with multiple parties and formula's, but it doesn't matter as we already have a no vote on #2 and I voted no on allowing a buy in and winner take all.  The reason I did this is because there are more winners (5) than losers (3), and thus the winners are risking more ($60) to gain less ($300) while the losers would essentially be risking more ($100), but would gain a lot more ($1000).

We need 2 more votes on #1 to decide the fate of the pool.

If #1 and #2 fail, then yes, we settle up this $100 pool and start a new $100 pool that is open to anyone.  I'm not starting a new $5 pool as that one is still going on.

Don't forget to make your pick this week.

And also, if you were a winner in the first $100 pool and didn't join the second, kindly let me know how you would like to get paid.

So are we shutting down the High Rollers and taking our winnings from Seth?

Eliminated in Week 6

No One

Picks

2 - New Orleans (no chance in hell, troy godamalu)

And in the Part Duex...

6 Participants, no one eliminated.

5 - New Orleans
1 - Dallas (Smackie)

Smackie was in the throws of one of the roughest sports weekends he could remember and at 9:30 AM he was faced with the decision to risk $100 on the AZ Cardinals and money line (he's a Steeler fan, for those unaware) or put his $100 in the pool at risk.  Smackie figured if he was going down, maybe he'd take the Cowboy's down with him.  The things he does for sports....

Teams coming off a bye week are 3-9 this season.  I know they changed the practice schedule rules, but this is still pretty shocking.

Discuss.

Phillip Rivers cost me $115 in a pool I was in last night.  I hate him.

looks like we lost seth again.  first round it was cleveland, this time it's kansas.  not that anyone could blame him for the pick: at home vs. winless miami seemed pretty safe...

edit: of course smackie is going to point out how this was, in fact, a completely stupid choice ;D

This is the complete text of an actual email conversation I had with venerable on Tuesday, Nov 1:

so. . .is k.c. a viable pick in one of the next two weeks. . . .ugh

Venerable

Quote
Ask your wife?.

Smackie

Every time Venerable has to part with his $105, which I make him do in person in front of his wife every year as part of our annual ritual, she destroys him for taking the Chiefs and asks how much money have they cost them every year.

True Story.

Picks

2 - Houston (no chance in hell, troy godamalu)

And in the Part Duex...

humbled (Seth)

Picks

4 - Houston

By my count, Seth is now down $1205 on the season in board survivor pools.  The price of beer at the club just went up a quarter.

There is a Thursday game this week.

If you wish to pick either the Raiders or the Chargers, you must do so 10 minutes prior to kickoff of that game on Thursday.  All other picks must be in 10 minutes prior to the kickoff of the 1PM ET Sunday game.

I see nobody fell for my Charger trap in this pool.

20 people were eliminated in my loser pool last night. Only 46 of the original ~260 remain.

Au contraire, mon frere.

I hate Philip Rivers, and Norv Turner is synonymous with "disappointment," but I picked the Chargers anyway.  Serves me right.

i believe that i am currently in a position known as "sitting pretty".

(in fact, i don't know if it's because i'm still alive today while everyone else is out, or if its because the packers' victory tonight is a foregone conclusion, but yahoo! already has me listed as the pool's winner already... ;D)

Yahoo didn't update the Thursday results for me until Sunday morning.  I am SHOCKED that you of all people went with a Norv Turner team.....

Obviously, you need to win tonight to be the pool winner despite yahoo's allegiance to your cause.

And sadly, I have to root for you.  Almost 40 people were wiped out of my loser pool, leaving me as one of the 28 people remaining out of 250+....stupid conflicts.

I wish I had something to say here....although somebody did get Tebowed in the loser pool last night.  It was not smackie.

My occupy students will probably go home tonight as there's no class next week so I'll do the accounting this weekend.

If you have a BofA account, shoot me a PM or email - it's cheaper than paypal.

pls let me know what I need to do to square up

Will do.

I'm serious this time about doing the accounting on this today.  If you haven't paid yet, please do so now.  There's actually a lot of $5 pool participants who haven't paid.

And if you're "no chance in hell" shoot me a message.
