Title: DC statehood in the wake of the election
Post by: Thousand Made-Up Loves on November 07, 2012, 09:56:27 pm
Step up to the plate and come get what you have coming, all you DC haters. We've got the GOP bent over, it's time to make statehood happen now!

Though I must admit, I'll settle for no federal taxes. AND the commuter tax.

Time to make it happen!

You're not falling for that 'forward' shit like you all got sucked into the 'hope and change' nonesense are you?

I think Porto Rico should be given statehood, but DC is just a small city when all said and done.

Why not give Dubuque Iowa statehood? It's the same thing really.

Uh Dubuque, Iowa has two senators and a representive in congress.  Something that DC does not.  I mean how many more people does Wyoming have over Washington DC.

I'd be fine with retrocession to Maryland at this point.

I'd be fine with retrocession to Maryland at this point.

Baltimore politicians will fall on their swords to prevent that from ever occurring.

Why would us Marylanders want DC?  I think a better fit would be Virginia.

*shudders*  would retroceding into Maryland instantly make me as bad of a driver as Marylanders?

I'm not here to argue for or against statehood, just to say that this is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

because you gave it to us in the first place - virginia has already taken back their portion of DC (arlington / alexandria)

well when your return something it should be in the same shape as when you got it.  How about we just take back northwest dc?  and virginia can have the rest.  That would give them the baseball stadium and that's ok as we already have one.

I just think they did things in the wrong order...they should have killed the filibuster first
at least make it so you actually have to stand on the floor
They literally can phone a filibuster in
Title: Re: DC statehood in the wake of the election

And pray tell us how they would kill the filibuster oh wise one?

My understanding was we don’t have the votes...but you will advise..

well that's the rub...but all this statehood stuff is silly to even get excited about
Trust me, I've been an advocate for almost 3 decades now...in the last few years I've a better understanding on how things work and realize ITSNOTHAPPENING

it's not like they can get sympathy from the MAGA's ....they don't want DC and all those unwashed minorities to have any votes

what they need to do is find a billion dollars in programs for AZ and WV..and tell Manchin and Synema to get the fuck in line and change the filibuster rules in the senate

Where did you read my overexcitement? I didn’t use an exclamation mark..

We should just ignore it?

not at all...but its DOA and you know it
it was like the impeachment...you got all in my grill about it
but its pretty much the same thing

It is not because we lose nothing here whereas with a failed conviction after Trump was impeached we did lose..

So you agree it's exactly like the GQP voting in the house to overturn ACA...meaningless and kinda a waste of time.

I think a lot of people out there think that "may actually work this time. We've got all three branches."
but it won't
I have a better chance at winning the presidency than this passing the senate.

trust me; I'm very bitter about this reality...couldn't hate those GQP fuckers more because they do this shit
it's like Apartheid In South Africa

This is totally not a waste of time for many reasons and DC statehood is a battle we must keep fighting

We control the Supreme Court?
opps...not all three branches
but house, senate and WH

I"m just bitter on this topic as I feel like I know the end result and makes me pissed off there is NOTHING we can do

Obviously I don’t agree that this is meaningless and a waste of time....

We may well not get there this time but the Democratic Party must continue to fight for DC statehood until it is done

It’s actually very important... imagine if the democrats just ignored this issue...then we really would be lost

Moreover, there are hundreds of thousands of disenfranchised American citizens in DC.. including many African Americans and black people all over the US know DC doesn’t have voting at the federal level because the Republicans don’t want black people having representation because they will lose those senate seats...think of the message the democrats would be sending black people - the backbone of the party- if they didn’t fight on this

It also sends a message from the Democratic Party and DC to the rest of the country that this is bullshit and wrong... that’s important

At least that’s the way I see it
