Title: Coachella 2013 - The Postal Service reunites, music snobs love/hate it
Post by: sweetcell on January 22, 2013, 11:43:53 am
apparently Gibbard and Tamborello are reuniting in the desert this spring:

Who Is and Who Isn't Playing Coachella 2013: What We Know
http://www.spin.com/articles/who-is-playing-coachella-2013-lineup

interesting that coachella offered to make the entire festival vegan in order to get Moz to reunite with Marr.  yeah, that would have gone over great with the fans and the vendors...

They played the Black Cat years ago.  I missed it because I was in Chicago.

Why do they even bother trying for Morrissey/Marr?  They both said it will never happen.  Sad.

i seriously, seriously doubt that.

The Stone Roses and the Specials said the same thing.  In fact the Terry Hall of the Specials said he didn't care about money he would rather be a garbage man for money than be in the Specials again.  Morrissey  should feel awful for all the animals that will have to die during that weekend because he refuses to play with Marr again.  Both have egos that are too big.

Smiths reunion would be huge.  It would sell out instantly.  Biggest reunion of all time.

I knew the Stone Roses would reunite when the time was right. Mani told me once that they were all pretty much in, it was really just about timing and money being right and Ian Brown crumbling, which Mani said he knew he would.

I would say the 2 most unlikely reunions we'll ever see are the Smiths and Husker Du. Too much bad blood and too many egos. And the more that time passes on, the less likely it'll happen. Morrissey doesn't care if Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke need the money. Bob Mould doesn't need the cash. He could have reformed Sugar and been rewarded handsomely well there, and in the end he didn't even do that.

The Smiths would be the grandaddy of all reunions for sure, but at this point I don't even know why anyone bothers speculating anymore. The Jam is also never going to happen.

The band I think I'd want to see most right now is the Red House Painters. And Catherine Wheel.

is there a way to request that they never reunite.  The guys other bands are actually a 100 percent better.  Plus I already have seen them.

Phoenix and the Chili Peppers as headliners? Pish posh! But a good chunk of that line up is pretty sexy. I still would never go unless I had an all expenses paid trip of some kind haha.

RHCP need to die.
Not the band, the members themselves.
It is the only way to be rid of them forever.
Somebody put strychnine in their heroin.

Who do the Red Hot Chili Shits keep blowing to get all these headlining gigs? They are horrendous yet keep getting all these high end headlining slots.

On the bright side: good time to vacate to beat the crowd and get a bit of sleep before moving on the following day.

This also means only one thing: Sonic will be there. Remember Sonic from a couple years ago who use to post here all the time? He once said that he was cursed with these guys. Everytime he went to some festival, he got stuck having to put up with them. Sonic, if you are reading this, sorry dude. What a miserable curse! Or, is it your fault they're on the bill?  ;D

None of the Coachella headliners are wow, but the undercard is pretty decent.  Primevera still looks good.  Let's hope Bonnaroo and Lolla are great

My take as well.  Undercard is strong enough to make going very worthwhile (wish I were, in fact).

The Chili Peppers' ongoing ability to score headlining gigs at festivals is rather astounding.

so damn expensive.  that saturday line-up is nice, but friday and sunday seem pretty meh to me.

if i had the money to do one big festival, i would skip over to primavera this year. would probably cost less than coachella, too.

Primavera looks incredible. But there is a HUGE chunk of truly great bands at Coachella this year. And I must give a shoutout to DC's own Deathfix and the Evens for being there too, which is really nice to see. I'm happy for those guys. My only consolation for not going is that I've seen most of these bands anyway, and I'm sure a bunch will come through the area at some point this year.

Aside from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the other band I'm getting sick of is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They have to be one of the most overrated, non-deserving bands out there. I just don't get the appeal. Vampire Weekend too. I think it just boils down to the fact that the YYYs and RHCPs have very good management and they can get the bands whatever they want. The RHCPs is basically a legacy act that fills a void at these events when they can't get the Rolling Stones or a Pink Floyd reunion or whatever. There's a few of them out there. I'd include the Foo Fighters and Metallica in that category. Sad that a band like the Beastie Boys, whom I really like and don't mind seeing, won't be appearing at these things again. But I guarantee you in a few years you'll see an Oasis reunion, a Sugarcubes reunion, and I'm sure Coldplay will headline sometime again within the next 3 years. All they can keep doing is making sure there are decent 2nd tier bands to keep it interesting.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are one of the best live bands in the world.  Their last album was one of the top 10 of the decade.  I think they are very underrated as a band and if they had a male lead singer they would be headlining.

Funny, I've seen the Yeah Yeah Yeahs 3 times, never thought of them as being a great live band. I've tried, trust me. But I'm glad that folks get enjoyment from them.

Even though I told Antony Kiedis "why don't you do us both a favor and change professions" in 1984.. I don't think it is hard to see why they get headlining gigs.  They have had a ton of radio play for the stuff that came out during the Frusciante years.  He is a musical genius and incredible guitarist.  I am sure people going to a festival don't realize that Frusciante isn't in the band they just want to hear all the hits.

well then they are plainly pretty damn stupid.  I guess it would explain why they think primavera has a better line-up than coachella.  When all the decent bands playing primavera are playing coachella and coachella has a ton of great bands that aren't playing primavera.

Whoah. Thanks!

I love reading stuff like this by the way: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/24/coachella-haters-disappoi_n_2547849.html

The musical elitist in me enjoys seeing people react negatively to the fact that the festival has basically gone back to a much older format (hard to see any holograms showing up this year).

Also, some people are complaining about how there are too many "old" bands. Well, if you're going to make it such an expensive ticket, you're sure as hell going to need to draw older folks that can afford to pay more money and travel. For many it involves plane tickets, car rentals, hotels, gas money, etc. Not just a concert ticket. That adds up very fast.

Remind me how many ALBUM Pheonix has under their belt?

Say what you will about the Chili Pepers, but God damn, Phoenix? Really? At this rate Sleigh Bells should headline every day next year. At least they have 2 fucking albums........ if that's even an arguement...

Phoenix have been around for about 13 or 14 years. 5 LPs. Last one was certified gold in the US. But it was hugely popular and a bunch of songs appeared in many places. Commercials, movies, etc. Still, I'd venture to guess that someone canceled or pulled out of night 2. I still think the 2-day festival format works better, but that's just my own personal feeling. I don't enjoy being around that many people 3 days in a row.

I've always thought the artwork on their first album hindered some early success. (Back when there was actual record stores) It's a great pop album with a horrible cover more suitable for Poison or Cinderella.

so i read this the other day . . . but now just now this guy on the radio claimed the rumours are that they are playing, and the leak of it only had to be followed by denials.
