yay! list time

Thought 2013 was a great year for music - tons of good and eclectic stuff out there - Steve I loved the jessie ware album as well

1. Jagwar Ma 'Howlin' (so much fun to listen to, brought me back to the summer of 1992 living in Germany)
2. The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock "The Brutal Here and Now' (Pogues meet Thin Lizzy meet Metallica meet Yes meet Elbow - stunning, hugely ambitious stuff)
3. The (London) Suede 'Bloodsports' (Didn't listen to or like them much first time around. A rare and notable example of a band coming back better and stronger)
4. Little Green Cars 'Absolute Zero' (Mumford meets Lumineers with a slightly bigger sound. Irelands finest - oh and they're kinda sorta my relatives)
5. The Virgin Marys 'King of Conflict' (uncompromising, balls to the wall rock n roll, saw them at DC9 with approx 24 people in attendance - y'all missed out)
6. Fidlar 'Fidlar' (snotty, aggressive, infectious, joyful, bratty punk rock - thank you Relaxer for turning me on to these guys)
7. Neko Case 'The More etc etc' (beautiful return to form, epic beautiful soundscapes and possibly the saddest song ever written in 'Nearly Midnight, Honolulu')
8. Deathfix 'Deathfix' (wonderful 70s and psychedelia influenced album by former Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty)
9. Jessie Ware 'Devotion' (not the kind of thing I would normally listen to but this worked for me on so many levels)
10. Billy Bragg 'Tooth and Nail' (another welcome return to form, Billy moved to Nashville and rediscovered his songwriting soul, while embracing a slightly more overt country sound - he wears it well)

Honorable mentions

Lianne La Havas
Daughter
Phosphoescent
David Bowie
Daughter
The History of Apple Pie
First Aid kit
She and Him
Eleanor Friedberger
Ex Cops
London Grammar
Jason Isbell
Villagers
Eels
the Young Evils
Portugal the Man
Bleached
Bleeding Rainbow
Shovels and Rope
Radkey ****** amazing
The Orwells
Dan Croll
QOTSA
Yo La Tengo
Johnny Marr

Biggest Disappointment

Future of the Left - I'm a huge huge fan dating all the way back to McLusky (thanks markie) but this was a piece of shit

Pretty sure Shovels and Rope and First Aid Kit are both 2012. Talk about two albums I like that I'm not allowed to play in the house.

I'll have my list at the end of the year. Jason Isbell, Bill Callahan, Josh Ritter, and Robbie Fulks will all likely be in my top 10.

Let me guess, you had to go in to work on a snow day? Or you're stuck home with the kids on a snow day when you'd rather be out record shopping?

maybe people are listing bands they discovered in 2013?

I think Jessie Ware's album was released in early 2013 in the US.
The UK version was released in 2012.

The Orwells and First Aid Kit definitely albums from 2012.

When you all create your lists, do you consider only choosing albums that you think you'll listen to in XXX amount of years from today?

I could possibly come up with a "best" list of 20 or so albums from this year, however, I bet only a handful of them I'll be listening to in 2022.

It's garage-y power pop that rocks and sounds good.

Ehh, that's kind of the way it always is if you consume a lot of music year after year. I keep a running MSWord document and when a particular record really stands out as something I'm listening to a lot, I put it on the list. Then when I saw this thread, I just pulled out the list, put them in order of how I feel about them and there you go.

One nice thing about having a document is that I now have 'Best Of' docs going back to 2005. For the most part, whatever I put at #1 and #2 are still records I love a lot, and usually those listed at #7 have faded from memory, though there are lots of exceptions.

I can guarantee that I will be listening to my #2 pick, Perfume's Level 3, for years because it's great exercise music. And I think I'll still love No Joy in 10 years because it's a great album and I like pretty much every track on it.

I don't go back to check dates but did note where something was a known 2012 release.

Fidlar is January 2013 per Amazon. Close enough!

How would you come up with a list of albums you would listen to in 2022? Seems pointless and frankly probably won't even be true.  I liked the the album "Bananaramma" when it came out in 1984 but I don't listen to it anymore and that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the album at the time.

Both the Shovels and Rope and First Aid Kit album are awesome.  I don't get the continual posting of how your wife wears the pants in your family.  I would hide that information from the public.

Not at all but you made a definitive statement about message boards that conflicts with virtually all of my experiences with message boards and I felt it was my duty to step up and point it out, which kind of makes me a hero.

Cool... I used to do something similar to that in the 00's but then I got lazy... I also realized I was trying to consume too much music and not really enjoy the finer albums that were/are being put out. Too many bands of the week (BOTW) out there that have no staying power that I wasted a few years on. Atomic will figure this out at some point.

It doesn't make sense.  Dont' worry no one will be reading this board in 10 years much less searching your list from 2013.

Why do you care about the staying power?  I am sure no matter how irrelevant a band becomes members of this board will still see them.  Case in point: Crowded House, Nick Cave and Morrissey. I listened to all of these at one point and no longer listen to any of them but there are members of this board who get wet every time one of these acts shows are announced.

QOTSA -- ...Like Clockwork
Best Coast -- Fade Away (mini LP)
Kurt Vile -- Walkin on a Pretty Daze
Throwing Muses -- Purgatory/Paradise
Yo La Tengo -- Fade
My Bloody Valentine -- MBV
NIN -- Hesitation Marks
Dean Wareham -- Emancipated Hearts (mini LP)
Arctic Monkeys -- AM
Primal Scream -- More Light

Honorable Mention
Iggy and the Stooges -- Ready to Die (Though not great, I really enjoyed this LP)

im waiting for the "fucking worst albums of 2013 list"

At the top of my list is Vampire Weekend. I just don't get that band. They're one band that make me feel really, really old. And I'm not that old (yet).

Led Zeppelin and the album "Layla" kind of suck. I guess I liked them when I was in High School I should have thought about what I would I like in 30 years because it is kind of embarrassing to think at one point I thought they were good.  Maybe I should read Rolling Stone magazine before making my opinions.

Vampire Weekend almost triggers an ASMR reaction in me. It's all smooth vocals and instrumentation and well-constructed songs that makes my skin benignly prickle. They're never going to be a band that I whole-heartedly love, and I can hear how people would find them boring, but I play all three of their records here and there.

I was extremely disappointed in the follow-ups by the bands that made my #1 albums in 2006 and 2012: The Knife and Capsule.

Capsule was the biggest disappointment, as Stereo Worxxx is a techno-pop album that I'll be listening to for years, and the new one is just waaaaay too Kid @ for me. I kind of admire what the Knife did but that doesn't mean I like it. I really miss the 'Deeps Cuts' days.

Go ahead.  Read "Rolling Stone" and believe everything they think is cool.  Then you'll become the anti-Brian Wallace.

I'm not defending the Zep but "Wearing and Tearing" is one of the four best songs ever to fuck to.

And you're all wrong (except for Bearman).  The album of the year was "The New Black":

may as well start with albums that I may actually be listening to in 20 years:

10 reissues:

arthur lee/love - black beauty (my main man)
pil - 1st issue (that 9:30 show was in my top 5)
molly drake (nick's mum)
beta band - the regal years (almost saw them @ bull run w/radiohead, anyone?)
sly & the family stone - higher (then cynthia is my woman!)
lee perry - super ape (beautiful packaging - deserves a grammy, or something)
fleetwood mac - rumours 3 disc (gotten @ target for $5 - now I understand why everyone had a copy - it's that great)
nick drake rsd comp w/fake cut-out hole, poster, etc.
tindersticks - across 6 leap years (not technically a reissue, but the songs are vintage - thank you seth for bringing them to town a few years back)
miles davis - jazz track (side 1 totally improvised in a French studio, side 2 w/the kind of blue band)
wings - over America (why did I trade this vinyl?)

10 new 2013 releases (briefly - getting tired/old):

howe gelb - the coincidentalist (references to my grad school day haunts in tucson, az)
david bowie - the next day (been with him since 'diamond dogs' - still my all-time)
bill callahan - dream river (flutes!)
jonathan wilson - fanfare (play 'spot the influence' and they are probably actually playing)
jacco gardner - cabinet of curiosities (is that a bit of 'forever changes'?)
nick cave - push the sky away/live @ kcrw (cheating, so what?)
arcade fire - reflector (waiting for a decent venue...)
john grant - pale green ghosts (my old keyboard, the roland juno 106 is all over that)
laura mvula - sing to the moon (the future of soul/r&b - for grown-ups)

honorable mention:
janelle monae - electric lady (the future of soul/r&b for the rest of us - wow show @ Lincoln theatre)

When you all create your lists, do you consider only choosing albums that you think you'll listen to in XXX amount of years from today?

I could possibly come up with a "best" list of 20 or so albums from this year, however, I bet only a handful of them I'll be listening to in 2022.

930 Forum Best of 2003 Lists (http://forum.930.com/index.php?topic=13757.0)

The Wrens is the only one I listen to with regularity 10 years on.  I have a few of the Idlewild and Joe Strummer tracks on playlists.  The other albums I probably haven't listened to in 3-4 years.

My favorite music thing about this year was hellacopters...even though they're an old band getting into them was awesome.

of the stuff that came out this year i really liked the nick cave, north mississippi allstars, franz ferdinand, tricky, and daft punk... there may be other things I'm forgetting..certainly things i'm overlooking..

i expected more from some of my sacred cows: phoenix, bowie (as much as I wanted to love it in only like it), andres calamaro and babasonicos....

i actually read a lot more great books  than anything else...

do you listen to it a lot? don't you find it kind of slow and depressing?

I listen to it a fair amount. Slow and depressing probably describes a good deal of the music I listen to.

Funny.  I loved that year of music too, and yet I might only listen to the Postal service album with any regularity from my list (http://forum.930.com/index.php?topic=13757.msg248995#msg248995)...although I did put that Supergrass album on a few weeks ago and enjoyed it.
