So I have seen 3 of movies nominated for Best Picture so far and I would rate them:
1) Gravity
2) American Hustle
3) Her
I am going to try them all before the award ceremony and all the best actor/actress supporting whatever before the awards ceremony. Whenever that is.
-
As someone who is Netflix only, I generally don't see most of the nominees until after the awards. We did see Gravity on Veterans Day, when my daughter was in school and we were off work. It was good, but not great.
Four of the five best documentary nominees are streaming on Netflix.
And one of the best foreign picture nominees is streaming on Netflix. The Hunt, from Denmark. Really, really good film.
But I think the best 2013 release I've seen was Short Term 12, and it didn't get any nominations as far as I know.
We also streamed Drinking Buddies last night. Not that good of a movie, but it was filmed at Revolution Brewery in Chicago, they namechecked Revolution and Three Floyds, and were drinking a Half Acre Daisy Cutter at one point. And some very brief nudity from Olivia Wilde. So I'm not complaining.

The Spectacular Now is better than most the nominees for Best Picture.
-
excellent as well

Blue Jazmin was excellent.. did it get any nominations?
Cate Blanchett's performance was Oscar worthy
BTW shame on the Oscars for never having honored Peter O'Toole..
-
Wolf of Wall Street was very good
;D

Shes considered the heavy favorite for Best Actress. No Best Pic/Director nom.

Nebraska
Her
American Hustle
Llewyn Davis (was it nominated?)

No, but Woody Allen is making a strong run for the Roman Polanski Lifetime Achievement Award.

Only in a couple of minor categories.

well it did get nominated for best actress, best supporting actress and best original screenplay...three of the heavyweight categories...
but it is with somewhat heavy/mixed heart that I continue to really enjoy his work...
I guess I believe in separating the art from the man....and since he has never been convicted, if even accused, in a court of law I cant do much about it.. but degenerates can make great art...should we not enjoy art by people who don't meet our personal or societal moral barometer?
I can't say I think Manhattan is any less great... but of course one does look at the relationship depicted between the Woody Allen and Mariel Hemingway characters a little bit differently....
Mia Farrow is a bit of a nutjob as anybody knows... her latest "revelation" I guess is that her son with Woody may actually have been fathered by Frank Sinatra (who she was "cheating" on Woody with more than a decade after she married Frank when she was 21 and he was 50) doesn't exactly cast her in a great light...
the fact remains that Woody Allen's body of work is among the greatest and probably the one I have enjoyed the most consistently...
Almodovar also comes to mind but he's made far fewer movies... Woody has been crankin them out for four decades plus now.... its an amazing career... Its pretty clear that in the US he simply does not get the credit or is as esteemed as in the rest of the world which is why he has gone abroad to find the financing for many of his movies the past decade... but whereas the Scorseses or Cohens make great movies they take 2 or 3 years per project.. their projects are major hollywood productions.. ..same with other directors I enjoy like Paul Thomas Anderson or Wes Anderson.. in that time Woody puts out 2, 3 or maybe even 4 movies...and some are light and fluffy but there are some heavyhitters there...
Too bad Andrew Dice Clay did not get a best supporting actor nomination..that would have been very funny... he was great in Blue Jazmine.. people can say what they want..

Just from what you wrote, I can tell exactly what you look like. You're a tiny, smelly, p-whipped douchebag.
Any awards show is just a circle jerk for insecure people. You're DISAPPOINTED they never honored Peter O'Toole?!?! I can assure Peter O'Toole was not. He lived a LIFE. He didn't care about some awards that are voted on by Ben Affleck. Let me guess, you cried yourself to sleep when Lou Reed died, didn't you? If you give two shits about what's nominated then you're lower and smellier than a queef.
Jesus. What a generation of absolute, self-analyzing, self-pittying pussies this is. No wonder none of you can get laid.
Brian
P.S. Now let's go back to discussing last night's episode of "Girls."

what a bunch of baloney... and btw save the cheap psychoanalysis for your practice.
I don't always watch the Oscars but I did the last time O'Toole was nominated and it was obvious from looking at him that he did care... Does it make him any less of a great actor that he didn't get an Oscar? Of course not.... But when you've worked in a profession for five or six decades, made some of the greatest movies ever made, sure a little recognition never hurts... its not about being insecure but about being human.

I think he won an honary academy award. The movie for him to most likely to have won an Oscar for would have been Lawerence of Arabia. He was beaten out by Gregory Peck's performance in 'To Kill a Mockinbird".
-
Wow he was nominated 8 times. Here is who he lost to:
In 2007: Forest Whitaker for The Last King Of Scotland
In 1983: Ben Kingsley for Gandhi
In 1981: Robert De Niro for Raging Bull
In 1973: Marlon Brando for The Godfather
In 1970: John Wayne for True Grit
In 1969: Cliff Robertson for Charley
In 1965: Rex Harrison for My Fair Lady
In 1963: Gregory Peck for To Kill a Mockingbird
Having seen all of these movies the ones I think were the weakest were Wayne in "True Grit" and De Niro in "Raging Bull"
1970 Losers:
Richard Burton, Anne of the Thousand Days
Dustin Hoffman, Midnight Cowboy
Peter O'Toole, Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Jon Voight, Midnight Cowboy
You could say the real one robbed in this one was Jon Voight.
1981 Losers:
Robert Duvall, The Great Santini
John Hurt, The Elephant Man
Jack Lemmon, Tribute
Peter O'Toole, The Stunt Man
I saw "Stunt Man" when it came up but it wasn't watched that much and I think it was to mixed reviews. I am not suprised this one didn't win.
-
Captain Phillips is the best of the Best Picture lineup, in my opinion, followed by 12 Years a Slave and Nebraska. Not a fan of American Hustle and Gravity. The rest are solid, though.
It is a shame they did not nominate Robert Redford (All Is Lost) for Best Actor or Inside Llewyn Davis for Best Picture.
-
Did Spring Breakers miss some cutoff date or something? What gives?
-
I think Franco is getting a lifetime achievement award for that one and This is the End.

I don't know "Pretty Little Liars" but "This is the End" was pretty funny.

Bad Grandpa is my new favorite movie of 2013. I have a cold, and that movie nearly killed me by making be laugh my way into coughing fits I couldn't stop.
-
I hated the moral lesson of "American Hustle". The only person in that movie that I identified with was the one who "lost."
Also, it just shows you how fickle perspective is because if any of those involved were not considered "cool" then "American Hustle" could be (and should be) relentlessly made fun of for all of the over-acting. I mean there's some hall of fame ham in that movie. How many times was Christian Bale shown with that "I'm stoic but I'm sweating and have no idea what's going on" look on his face? 50? 100?
And Jennifer Lawerence...I don't think you're SHOUTY and DRAMATIC enough! Once it got to "Delilah" I was like: "That's it. This is a 2-hour movie trailer."

My nine year old son has begged and begged to see that. Sorry buddy...too soon.

The kid in it was eight. Wouldn't want to accidentally provide him with an inappropriate role model. ;D

If Bronies doesn't win the award for best documentary... Ok, i wont watch the show either way.
-
watching that doc as we speak. not very good. the subject is good, but not the doc. i prefer docs on trekkies and star ward nerds. bronies are fake mental problems.
-
You aren't going to go to the Baltimore Bronycon?
-
it scares me. i would like to know why bronies, hate incarnation number three.

I think the Best Actress award is much more interesting than the Best Actor award this year. I would probably give it to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine over Sandra Bullock for Gravity.
The Lego movie was pretty good. You should see it if you haven't had a chance.
-
I guess she should probably win because he character was an annoying piece of shit, and I'm sure she's actually a very nice woman in real life, so it was probably a great acting job.
I took my daughter to see Frozen, which for me was surprisingly watchable (and she loved it) and saw the previews to the Lego Movie. As a family who hates all these loud, obnoxious, over the top American cartoons, it looked like something best passed on. We did go to the LEGOLAND theme park in Germany, and that was pretty darn cool.
Does anyone have a favorite for Best Documentary? Four of the five nominees are currently streaming on Netflix (did I already post that fact?) I still have to try to watch The Act of Killing before Sunday night.
Also streaming is The Hunt, nominated for Best Foreign Film. And very deservedly so.

Saw Wolf Of Wall Street over the weekend. I thought it was AMAZING. Scorcese being Scorcese and I've never ever been mad at that.

You know what? Last Saturday, I sat down with my 9 year old son and watched this. It was his first Rated R movie and he was SO excited. I watched it myself beforehand and decided that it's really a very mild R. I mean, I guess they have to stamp it with R considering the soda machine and the men's strip club scenes but there wasn't graphic sex or violence and the story is pretty sweet. It was really fun watching it with him. The scene at the diner made him literally pee his pants. We had to pause it so he could go change.

Good point. I like having my taste buds assaulted but not my ears and eyes. I don't like "loud" music, either.

That speech by Jared Leto was truly an aspiration to all future punk rock goddesses out there, wasn't it?

The award ceremony has been quite dreadful even by Academy Award Ceremonies. Ellen is a horrible host. Nothing interesting in the entire show. Didn't see 12 years a slave but it looks pretty awful in the clips.

worst ever.

Why the hell am I commenting on an Oscars thread?

My wife fell asleep and basically missed the whole broadcast. When I reviewed the show for her and mentioned Karen O (who Zac Ephron referred to as "an aspiration to punk rock goddesses everywhere"), my wife asked "Isn't she the woman from Grey's Anatomy?"
By falling asleep, perhaps my wife was just getting me back for falling asleep during the matinee showing of (animation nominee) the Wind Rises that we had attended as a family earlier in the day.

How dumb did John Travolta look butchering Idina Menzel's name? When he said it, I thought they had come up with a substitute singer. I actually expected fat Adele to come out and sing, until Idina appeared on camera.
The Twitterverse exploded after John Travolta botched the Broadway star's name by introducing her as Adela Dazeem ahead of her performance at Sunday's Oscars.

Sadly, I agreed that Ellen sucked. The pizza segment was almost as bad as bad the gay wedding segment in the Grammys.
They should just let Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host every awards show. The Golden Globes kicked the Oscars ass in every way.

Jay Mohr would be hilarious, IMO. I saw clips of him at the NASCAR awards and he was funny in a mean way, but not over the top like Ricky Gervais a few years back.

^^ I say that as the one person on Earth who thought David Letterman was the high-water mark for Oscar hosting, so: grain of salt.

I looked at past hosts and Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg almost every year. I guess they just pick the most annoying person available. Does anyone find Billy Crystal funny? Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Walky's cat ... anything would be improvement.

who was the skinniest woman at the show? who was the worst dressed? white tux versus regular ole black tux. why didnt liza introduce pink? why cant jennifer lawrence walk right? best singer of the night? the award that nobody really gives a shit about and should be dropped from the show? what category would you love to see added?
-
During the pre-show, someone was interviewing Laura Dern and the camera made a quick pan to Calista Flockhart and then back to Laura Dern. We thought the point was to show that there was indeed a woman skinnier than Ally McBeal.

I just saw Nebraska and Dallas Buyers Club and both were really good. Once Philomena and Wolfs of Wall Street are available for rental I can make my final rankings. I did think Mathew did deserve his Best Actor award.

Has anybody seen the Broken Circle Breakdown? Wow, what a soul crusher of a film. Best soundtrack of the year, too (with apologies to Frozen and Llewyn Davis).
Considering how good that one was and how good the Fall was, I can't believe some Italian movie won best foreign film.
-
What the hell is up with Tom Cruise movies? Most of them are about where he uncovers a government conspiracy, then realizes he's not who he thinks he is, then restores his true identity. And these are big budget productions.
I think the scientologists are funding these flicks as recruitment tools. They stir up distrust in government, then they replace identities with alien worship or something. I bet if you go back and watch these movies, there are some subtle references to scientology at the climax, where the hero wins.
-
the unicorns in legend . . . aliens.
-
I've now seen all five nominated documentaries, and I can say I think the Academy made the right choice.

I subscribe to the family Guy theory that he's running from his gay thoughts so they can't catch him.

I saw The Broken Circle Breakdown on Thanksgiving Day in a very empty theater with a friend and some other woman. The theater was dead silent throughout the entire movie (granted it was only 3 of us). The story is so touching and heartwrenching.
Hard to believe after that - we'd all go to a Thanksgiving dinner. The music is just GORGEOUS!! Ive been looking for the soundtrack (available in Europe) and its surely worth the money.
Either that movie or The Hunt should have won for best foreign film. Mads Mikkelsen was excellent in the film. Now that was another gut-wrenching film but very worth seeing for those who havent.

Watched the movie "Django Unchained". Well really only watched the first hour of it. Didn't get the point of the movie. Main characters were the bad guys in the movie. I don't know how that guy won best supporting actor as he was the star of the movie.

django was fucking awesome. thats all, that needs, to be said.

Watched the first two hours and 10 minutes of Wolf of Wall Street last night. Awful movie. I don't know why he only got two years in jail. Basically ripped everyone off which the story minimizes and it is basically him doing a bunch of drugs and having sex with prostitutes with an occasional midget toss thrown in. Totally worthless person who is bragging about what a great life he thought he was having.
Leonardo's acting was awful even by his low standards. Lowpoint of his was the drugged out scene where he took a bunch of qualudes and trys to keep someone from choking to death. Only one of the Oscar movies that I have seen that I did not like at all. Makes Captain Phillips seem great in comparison. Who nominated this dog of a movie?

I think you're just jealous because while your wife will be getting older every year, Leonardo's current girlfriend will always be 23.

He is dating a 23 year old? I don't really follow actors personal lives so I didn't know this. I will check it out.

21 actually.

Can we get some NSFW warnings in the future, please?

I don't think he's ever dated anyone older than 23. Once they hit 24, he drops them and finds a younger one.

Finally got around to watching this movie, (tBCB) - one of the few movies worth watching on Amazon prime
Wow that really tore me to pieces, I had to stop it a few times it was so intense.
But the integration of the music in the plot was just fantastic, that was some sweet bluegrass done by a Flemish actors/musicians
What an emotional tsunami! I was not prepared for that
