They'd be a great supporting act.

Won't be in town, unfortunately.  Saw them back in the day but would go see them if I were around.

The Replacements might be enough to get me to brave the crowds. Add Spoon to that and I'm there for sure.

Absolutely "No" to getting the Replacements at FreeFest. If we're going to get a DC show on this tour, i'll take a headlining club night over a shortened, late afternoon set to a crowd of people waiting for whomever the next act is.

I may be wrong, but as a member of Guns'n'Roses, Tommy Stinson is on some kind of "retainer" agreement. No tours, he can only perform festivals/one-offs and I think that's why they haven't done any clubs. As much as I'd love to see the 'Mats, No Bob Stinson no true 'Mats. But that being said, if they were playing at a festival that other bands I wanted to see were playing, of course I'd check them out.

The '87 shows I saw were pretty stellar. After that things changed and I might tend to agree it wasn't the "real" Mats.

If Billy Joe Armstrong showed up I'd be livid.

I kind of enjoyed being able to walk right up, there were tons of people watching them, but the stage they played was so spread out that 7000 people looked like 1500.  I did the same thing for Pavement at the freefest a few years earlier.  Sat at on the lawn, then realized there weren't that many people in the pit and walked right up.

They were the worst live band ever with Bob Stinson in the band.  I don't if they are better without him but they couldn't be worse.   Last band I would want to see live again.

I don't need to see a youtube video.  I saw them live at the end of 1984 at the old 930 club.  I walked out halfway through as none of the songs were recongizable.  I was one of the last ones to do so.

Maybe Guns and Roses should have the Replacements as an opener and Tommy could play in both bands.  I am guessing at this point "Guns and Roses" are pretty awful live.  I haven't seen them since 1988 so I don't know for sure.  So they seem like it would be a good match.

I still say that Bob Stinson wrote/performed some of the very best solos that made them a great band that made some classic LPs, and it wasn't the same after he was fired. And his demise is sad. That being said, "Sorry Ma", "Stink", "Let It Be" are all some of my favorite music of the 1980's.

He didn't do the solo on "I will dare".  Those albums are pretty good.  Especially "Let it Be".  Also,  I like "Please to meet me" better than "Tim" for what its worth.

Peter Buck from REM played on "I Will Dare". Westerberg played mandolin.

Bob Stinson is responsible for a lot of the brilliant guitar on most of their classic songs: "Shiftless When Idle", "Customer", "Johnny's Gonna Die", "Color Me Impressed", "Sixteen Blue", "Unsatisfied", "Bastards of Young". Westerberg is a great songwriter, but you can't really compare later records to the stuff they did prior to "Pleased to Meet Me" (which is a good LP, but if "Tim" had better production it'd beat the pants off PTMM).

Is September 20th the consensus for the date of Freefest? The month is getting filled with amazing shows and I'm attempting to manage which I'll be attending.

Okay, maybe I am just an optimist, but I think Seth sent the cryptic message I was hoping for.

"Unfortunately, the pieces are not all there right now with Virgin. Whether they are again who knows. But the Freefest concept is fantastic and we are exploring options to continue it at Merriweather,? wrote the I.M.P. chairman.

Sounds like it could happen, but not with Virgin. And maybe it is just me, but I am okay with it not being free, if that is the way it ends up. I like the "Fest" part.

If it is over, thanks for the fun the past few years, Seth!

Yeah, Freefest started the year I moved here and I'll miss having it as a summer send off. Many of the acts they brought in just wouldn't play this market otherwise, and to be able to see them in a festival setting was great.

I would happily pay for something similar (regardless of the branding) moving forward, and hope we can continue to have a unique and prominent festival in this area.

count me in as somebody who would rather pay and have a good festival in the area.. something i don't have to drive 2-4 hours to (NOT GONNA HAPPEN).....

honestly, i guess i am in the minority but the last two years i don't think Freefest had great lineups and i skipped it.

i'd like to have something where we get somebody like the Replacements..they were never gonna play Freefest..

but i'll always be grateful for the year i saw LCD Soundsystem (and Pavement) there...LCD was one of the best shows I've seen.. or rather let me say one of the shows i most enjoyed.... and i was a few feet away from the stage...for F R E E....priceless...thank you Sir Seth (knighted by the order of Magnacca).....thank you Richie Branson.

That LCD Show, actually the whole day/night, was just perfect.  We were in the front row of the pavillion for most of the day, saw Trombone Shorty early in the morning...Joan Jett was just awesome.  Aside from having to suffer through Matt and Kim, it was just a perfect perfect show.  Opening up with Dance Y'rself Clean...just fantastic!

Ugh, I miss that band so much.

Ok anecdotal name dropping of current bands does not erase your overwhelming predilection for artists who stopped making relevant music in the 90s. (or more likely 80/70/60s)
