what's worse DAR or Echostage?
I think one of my biggest grips is they need to sell 500 less tickets
That you a squeezed in at the back of the club is absurd
where do bands go that can pack in 3000-4000 people (and tix are still $60+!!)
I managed to get a good spot at the Alt-J show and the sound was great IMO
-
I like DAR. DAR is great but it depends on the act. Sufjan Stevens was awesome there. I've also been to some really good sounding shows at DAR - Arcade Fire, Pixies, Erykah Badu, Damien Rice....
-
excellent thread. because if i owned a club and made $10k per night, i would totally shut it down based on what some random internet person said.
-
Echostage is KILLING music. The Replacements played there and now they're broken up! Coincedence!?!?!
-
of course not, there's a Get Rid of Ticketfly thread too and look where they are now...

echostage . . . the new, problem, that shapes our lives.
-
I just read this as "This venue isn't in walking distance to where I live and I'm afraid of NE DC."

that is between the lines, yes
but until a few years ago, 930 club was a sketchy hood too
-
I wasn't a fan. The area didn't seem sketchy to me. We ate at Panda Gourmet before the show (thanks for the suggestion, it was great!). I think I agree with 500 tickets less, that might help. And as I said in the other thread, I think raising the stage some would help as well. We were upstairs for the first few songs of Tame Imapla and it sounded pretty shitty - coupled iwth terrible sight lines due to the columns. We moved downstairs - the sound was much better, but so many people so we were crammed in the back...and had a tough time seeing the band. I've been to sold out shows at the 930 and always feel like I can still see the band.

A few years ago, even 10 years ago, you would have been mocked on this board as being a suburban pussy for saying that about the 9:30 area.
-
^yea and it kinda is starting to look like Bethesda where the 930 is

I enjoyed the one show I went to at Echostage. It was Sasha. I haven't been there when it's been packed, so I can't comment there. It's a decent venue, high ceilings, lots of dance space and a great sound system. Why hate it?
Personally, if one IMP venue had to bite the dust, I'd pick the Lincoln Theater. The upstairs sound, sight and seats all suck. I'd go back if I could buy a reserved seat. This get there super early to get a seat and then wait hours to see the band nonsense sucks. I've already passed on 5 shows I'd see at other venues because they were at the Lincoln.
DAR is great sight, sound, and seat wise, but they need to allow drinks in the seats. If they don't, I'll probably continue to pass on shows there too.
-
Lincoln Theater is also way overpriced and yes they should start doing reserved seating again.

echostage is better suited as a dance club than a music venue. hence you didn't have a problem with seeing a DJ there. the sound system was built with EDM in mind. sightlines aren't as important.

depends on the show. some they allow drinks in the same, some they don't.
sound at DAR is very hit-or-miss. really depends on whether the sound techs know how to work that room. i've heard some great shows at DAR, and i've heard some of the worst there. Eddie Izzard a few years back was unintelligible and unlisteneable if you were in the back half of the room.
-
DAR is great sight, sound,
lol. What? Great sound at DAR???
I think DAR has some of the worst sound that I have ever heard.
-
^you edited that too quickly as I was going to give you a hard time for having
'the worst sound you had ever seen'

I guess I'm with Sweetcell now that I think more about it. I saw Oysterhead years back and it sounded god awful. At the back of the room you could hardly make out some of the music. However, I recall seeing Widespread Panic there and being really, really impressed with the sound quality. I saw Primus there too and recall trying to compare it to the Oysterhead show. Les was more audible all around in vocals and bass, but it still wasn't perfect. I wonder why some bands have such a hard time with it.

To be fair, you were seeing Oysterhead; how would you know if it sounded any good?
-

my guess is that it comes down to the sound techs - do they have the knowledge of and experience dealing with a big boomy room.

Correct. Interpol's sound guy is an acquaintance and he said he really struggled with getting the room to sound good. But I thought he did fine when they performed there. He's been working with them for YEARS.
-
I need to see more shows at Echostage to make up my mind. Replacements wasn't very good but that's perhaps not only because of the venue, and so far DAR certainly is at the bottom in terms of sound. The sound at Neutral Milk Hotel was just awful from halfway back. In terms of location and parking, Echostage is much better than DAR for me. Obviously not that many 3000 capacity places are great, but certainly a few much better than Echostage and DAR come to my mind, like Terminal 5 in NYC. So I'd say get rid of both DAR and Echostage.

This was pretty much the same discussion about seeing live bands at Nation vs DJs/Live PA shows before it closed down.
DAR is hit or miss with the sound.

I was at that show in the back and it sounded awful...but Julian is right too
I did bump into Dave Grohl at that show, so there is that
-
I saw Belle & Sebastian in 2010 and Arcade Fire on the 'Neon Bible' tour at DAR and both times the sound was excellent, especially the B&S show. And I remember having a beer at my seat.
-
The Arcade Fire show did sound REALLY good. B&S both times I've seen them there have been pretty good. The first couple Pixies shows (first reunion go-around) were meh...but the Doolittle shows sounded awesome, and the recordings I have from those shows are pristine.
-
wide, spread panic tears the roof off that place whenever they played. of course, we were all taking acid, x, and smoking all the pot in the world. you should see the beer consumption at a widespread show. they run out, half way through.

Vas lives closer to Baltimore and last I checked, he likes the Blowtel (the actual worst venue in the city) which also is in NE but that's not an IMP venue so that's a discussion for another thread.
I just read this as "This venue isn't in walking distance to where I live and I'm afraid of NE DC."

yikes, hadn't really planed on taking any molly (http://www.wusa9.com/story/news/local/dc/2015/06/11/echostage-sick-woman-transported-molly/71066222/)
but my recommendation is to not buy any at Echostage
-
Plus ABC violation. Wouldn't be surprised if they get a 96 hour shutdown.
-
I blame, vas d.
-
ecstacy is always dodgy ....
i read flakka is the new thing though... makes you run naked in the streets yelling "I am god i am satan.."
-
I don't need, flakka, for that.
-
Echostage did NOT suck tonight. I'm officially putting it in the hit or miss column. The sound for Belle and Sebastian was great.

Place needs A/C. It was hot in there to begin with and it was 90 and humid all day today, imagine the place fully packed with people dancing their asses off...plus $5 water bottles. I don't mind Echostage making a buck but if you're not going to have A/C make water somewhat affordable. I believe 9:30 has A/C.

Who owns Echostage? Does Seth own a share?

From the balcony you really can't see much if you are more than person back from the railing. And the stage is sorta low from a main floor perspective so you don't really get to see THAT much when you're stuck in the back or too far off to the side.

Seth, might I make some suggestions for improvements at Echostage please?
1. Provide free water. There is free water at the 930 and water fountains at Merriweather. Yet patrons have to pay $5 for a bottle of water at Echostage?
2. Allow taxis and Uber to actually come to the front of the venue rather than having to wait down the street at the bottom of the hill. Also, call a taxi company when a show is letting out to let them know there is tons of business to be had so there are actually taxis waiting. There were dozens of people trying to find taxis.
3. Raise the height of the stage. A foot or two would make a vast improvement for those of us that are short and/or standing further back in the venue.
4. Improve the A/C. We were standing in an area that wasn't particularly packed and it was still a sweat fest.
Thanks!

I searched the place and there isn't even a water fountain ...that f'd up
raise the stage and the AC
But it was nice to meet lily so it wasn't all bad
-
I guess the best way to enjoy the show there is to get there early. ;D
-
I still thought the sound was off and we were only a row or two back. Vocals sounded like they were coming from a mile away.

To be fair, you have to be open to the possibility that someone lied to you and you were, in fact, a mile away.
-
I did walk up to the barricade as we were hanging around for a bit afterward.
Plus Joe was hell bent on being up close.

it's not my venue, but let me see if I can get them to work on these

Really enjoyed B&S. Sound was great by me, around 5 or 6 deep.
Liked Alvvays, but the vocals were lost in the mix.
Men's restroom at Echo is insanely great; but we sure don't need the bathroom attendant.
-
We got there early and A/C was quite strong, even too cold near the front. Perhaps it has to do with location.
About the sound, if you are in the first 5 rows, it doesn't matter too much what size is the venue since you mostly get the sound from the stage. The mix there wasn't perfect like all venues (low vocals), but it was OK. Also the view is more than fine from there. So overall Echostage isn't bad.

I was totally going to make a joke on this, but I'm glad that Jules took care of that for me :)
