Not so hot
I woke up on the 31st with a stiff neck
and only got worse last night...
But am not quite ready to pronounce 2021 a bust just yet
-
Just talked to my mom and wished her happy new years. She said she believes the election is not over and we will still be getting four more years of Trump come January 20. 2021 the same as 2020 for me so far.
-
Krug’s NV champagne has really fallen off so this year is kinda shit so far.
-
stimulus check for 4 just showed up in my bank account
so going pretty good for the first day
-
Didn’t hear about MF Doom until this morning. Also heard a cousin has COVID. So not a good start.
Took an 18 mile bike ride which ain’t a lot but is for me. So it hasn’t been all bad.

What a crappy day
Cold and wet, gonna try to get a ride in tomorrow
-
Got a 16.5 mile run in this morning...beautiful day for it!
-
Perfect day.
Got a 15 miles biking too. Was a big achievement, as it was the first time on a bike since my injury (6 months)
So anecdotaly 2021 has been outstanding
-
Got in a four mile flat dog walk at Rachel Carson because that's the biggest "hike" I could get my family to do. Meanwhile my friend who has cancer hiked Old Rag today.
At least I got to try some beers next door at Elder Pine. My favorite may have been the ESB, Bitter Geezer. Didn't even know I liked that style, but damn it was tasty.
-
Is this an exercise thread?
Did 26 miles on the bicycle today.
-
My neck is even worse
I have barely moved from this chair... I f do not know how I could mangle it so bad frickin sleeping.. I think I got a pinched nerve in there too
I gave away all my good pain meds and this ibuprofen does zero
Watching Soul (movie).... lots going for it
-
Hutch, I would seek a professionals advice, back/neck pain can really become a debilitating problem and my opinion is pain meds for those kind of injuries cause even more problems (see long list of dead celebs and avg people). Pain meds never ‘fix’ a back injury
Personally I have had a lot of success with chiropractic YMMV
It’s probably covered by your insurance

.
Is this an exercise thread?
HA
Well it’s not very 2021 to brag about where you’ve gone or who you hung out with
On a related tangent I am adopting a baby sourdough starter (well think mail order bride)
It hasn’t arrived in the mail but I’m tracking it like norad on santa
I’ve already read “what to expect when you are expecting”
Some people feed it 3 times a day, but I think I’m going with 2
We were going to have a gender reveal party... but that got complicated
Do people name their starters?
-
Well usually it’s just a stiff neck and goes away

Nice park when it isn't packed. In the past we've gone there and had trails to ourselves. Proximity to EP can't be beat.
The trail behind Blue Mash can be nice, too, but isn't anywhere close to four miles.

Watching Soul (movie).... lots going for it
Some ultra woke neighbor of mine was trying to tell me that Soul is racist and she won't let her children watch it.
Yes, this neighbor does have a mixed race family and the father was/is somewhat of a close friend of mine but covid has kind of like most relationships made us grow apart.
I'm as liberal as they come but I'm pretty tired of this shit... It's a God damn feel good movie and this woman has to make everything a race issue. This is the same lady that discusses political oppression, gender issues, tells her kids santa isn't real but yet won't let them watch fucking Soul. End morning rant.

I'm glad you agree a six and three year old should be able to watch soul if they're allowed to discuss black men being killed daily, them/theys, and to ruin santa for multiple other children in the neighborhood.
-
I must be really unwoke cause I thought it was a great movie including its depiction of black people...and jazz
I came away thinking it would be great if more movies featuring black characters were like Soul
God I am a horrible racist aren’t I?

Exactly. I'm on the same side of everything with this lady and she makes an argument/issue out of basically any topic.
She's also a lawyer so pretty much on brand.

Sorry this happened to you. Was she saying this *after* you told her your own feelings about the movie? If so, that's pretty fucking bold. If not, she's allowed to express her opinion and it's fine for friends to have vastly differing opinions. Focus on the positive and try to mute button the negative.

I was listening to WAMU the other day, and they were talking about some random topic and then someone came in and inserted race in the discussion, because of course they did. I was flabbergasted though i should have been. I wish i could remember what it was but i don't. It just seems to be the norm for some people.
Oh well, time to lift some weights in the basement and go for a run far shorter than 16.5 miles.

Did someone put shrooms in Space's Wheaties this morning?!

Do people name their starters?
People do name their starters. How many times its fed really depends on temp, chlorine in water, and type of flour you're using. Better go out and buy at least a 10 pound bag of flour just for your starter. It took me about 25 pounds to build one from scratch in the summer.

so did you name yours?
After 25lbs I’d name it Bertha

Looks like 2021 will look the same as 2020 with another great listening party for the The Feelings - 12 Stops From Home... an album i totally judged originally on the generic band photo used for the cover on US release for it.... had a Maroon 5 vibe to it... little did I know it was a great power pop album with lots of Supertramp and Queen like qualities.. saw a featurette on the band and got totally hooked

what kind of sourdough starters y'all messing with? 2 or 3 feedings a day?!?
once you've got a good starter going, it doesn't need nearly that much care. seal it up in a mason jar, put it in the fridge and it can go for months without being touched.
source: the missus, who bakes 100% of our bread. every batch contains at least some sourdough, the occasional batch is 100% sour. the day before making a new batch, she pulls the jar out of the fridge and feeds it a few times over several hours to build it up. she then refills the mason jar (typically about ~10% of the total mass) and puts it in the fridge, using the other ~90% to bake with. go 2 months until more bread is needed, then repeat.
admittedly my sister-in-law, who is a biology lab rat, is hyper-attentive to her starter and feed it regularly - but even she goes a week between feedings...
neither of them have named their starters, as far as i know.
-
replace the word starter with child...
I haven’t received mine yet and was going a little hyperbolic on the care and maintenance
But seems to be more work than a succulent

i'm starting to think that an early sign of a modern failed state is the wide-held belief that entertainers make for good politicians.
-
entertainers make for good politicians. win elections for no other reason than they are famous
FTFY
There has been some talk that the Dem's need to think like this a little more on the top of the ticket and just make sure the bottom of the tickets are filled with the policy wonks who will get the job done
there are a lot of holes in that theory, but it's all about getting elected and having power in order to move your policy goals forward
If clooney is at the top of the ticket and we get M4A, job training programs, infrastructure and climate bills passed...I'd say that's a good stragety

not so good for those in Myanmar
-
31 days sober
8 lbs down (haven't lost one pound since my last post)
31 days of exercise
One thrown out back (thanks shoveling or sledding)
-
Shoveling is the worst... so many people have heart attacks shoveling ⛄️
-
I once suffered a broken back from sledding years ago. I have never suffered a heart attack from shoveling. Never been to Myanmar.
I've worked out every day in 2021, and almost every day in 2020, but my weight keeps creeping up. :(
I signed my wife and I up for the vaccine in Fairfax County. It was unclear whether those in the 25-29.9 range qualified, but we're both on the high end of that range, so....even it we do qualify, it will probably be months from now...

Define working out...14 mile run with Grateful vs 20 min brisk walk around the neighborhood
At this point, you are doing the right thing with exercise, you should focus on the intake (Higher ABVs, pastry stouts and barrel-aged beers are 350-500 cals per can). Look for high carb/Sugar things and eat way more leafy greens (watch the salad dressing tho)
What is killing me is the mindless TV eating.

very dangerous in Plains Township, Pennsylvania too

20 pushups and 40 situps a day, most days
two sets of 12 reps with free weights every other day, a half dozen different upper body things
3-6 mile run (usually six) two or three times a week
75 min paved trail ride on mountain bike on non-running days
60 mins (supposedly 500 calories burned) on stationary bike (on days when neither running nor biking is possible)
1.77 mile dog walk, daily

FWIW, I'm up to an 18 mile long run, usu Saturday mornings.

How do you avoid arthritis? I was doing a 13 mile run every Saturday morning (and making fun of half-marathoners) up until years ago..but the knee arthritis has slowed me down to a pace where my run is barely faster than my walk, and six miles is as hard as 13 used to be.

Thanks. In spite of working out, I've still gained weight during the pandemic. When I had an office to go to, I limited my food intake to what I brought from home. Now my food intake is limited to whatever I have at home. The biggest culprit is dark chocolate, which I nibble on all day. I also tend to mindlessly shove food in my mouth when i'm cooking, which I do four nights a week.

Consider rowers and ellipticals. Far easier on the knees. Of course, you'd be stuck in one place unless you got an actual row boat.

Thanks. I did the rower at the gym pre-pandemic. I also have back issues, so have to be careful not to overdo it on that. But I really like doing it. I have considered buying one for the house, but haven't pulled the trigger. Would love to have a kayak, if i lived on or near a lake. So usually save the kayaking for vacations.
Ellipticals have always seemed like something that requires much more coordination than I have...
-
There are ellipticals w/o the arm things. I put very little arm effort in and rely mostly on my legs. I do the opposite on a rower.
From what I've seen, most people adapt to an elliptical right away. It's rowers they seem to eschew much more, thus why they're far less popular in the gym. Adapting to a rower doesn't take long, and once you get it down you can go forever. Plus they're fantastic for the upper body.
-
i do about 20 minutes of elliptical a day, 6 days a week. sometimes up to 40 mins, other times i'll do a 15 minute high-intensity sprint... but it's all elliptical, all the time for me. wanting to save my knees is the main driver, my family has a history of bad knees and knee replacements. sometimes bike a few miles with the kids on the weekend, dunno if that counts.
might need to get back into pushups, sit-ups, flailing weights, etc.

Dunno! I've run 13 marathons in as many years (plus countless half-marathons, 10Ks, etc) and never had any knee problems. Can't say that my 50+ year old bones won't give out eventually, but in the meantime, I just keep going...

I'm a Realtor. I have clients who constantly are losing out on contracts even though they're coming in $20,000 to $30,000 above list price. They are losing out to people who are writing contracts on homes (sometimes built in 1900) and waiving all inspections including home inspections / septic inspections / well inspections / any type of inspections and appraisals . . . and just hoping that the house is A-OK when they sign all the papers.
I have clients crying over the phone to me because they've lost out on 6 or more contracts because people will do anything and everything to buy a house now including selling their children. I'm almost ready to take a break and come back when people aren't so stupid. Every client I have ever worked with who told me they bought a property in the past without doing a home inspection said it was the worst decision they ever made in their life.
So needless to say . . . Fuck 2021.
-
OTOH, those sweet sweet commissions!
-
You should reach out to people in the neighborhood and tell them how much they can make selling their home. Maybe even do it via postcard. - sidefi

My reco was to do some research first, as it would be a waste of postage and paper to send to everyone...namely, houses that haven't sold in decades
Hey what do I know.... I made millions in real estate to only lose it in the tulip bubble

wise advice, it's amazing how many 10-100k problems could be found by a $250 inspection

Feeling pretty good logging my 100th mile in the saddle in 2021
Undeniably off to a slow start, but the trend line is going in the right direction
I’m thinking 2500 is a good EOY goal

2021
How
Is
Going?

Work is fucking killing me. There’s nothing like email exchanges with your boss at 2am.
My work/life balance is non-existent.

Whilst out wizarding today, a bird pooped on my phone... not sure if there is an achievement to unlock for this

I am pretty much on call 7 days a week including all holidays. I'm showing property tomorrow on Easter because, life never stops. I feel ya with work burn out. But I look back at what I put up in my previous line of work . . . so I try not to complain. In real estate, no one cares if you complain, anyway. I'm sure, your job is the same.
Welcome to why, most agents drink heavily. In fact, "All Agents Defect and All Resisters Sell Out.

I can relate. Told my boss I wanted my weekends back so the alternative is late nights.
Going back to the office in July or whatever is going to suck. At that point I’ll be reluctant to even offer weeknights on a regular basis. Tough balancing act when I will lose a couple hours of productivity a day.
