Bad Moves / The Paranoid Style / Truth or Dare at Songbyrd

Will have to say Songbyrd is a nice little venue, just wish I hadn't spent 20 minutes trying to find a parking space around Union Market when there a super easy spot in from the schools around the corner.

Anyways, first up were a newer DC band Truth or Dare who turned a in definite top tapping fun set.  While they describe themselves as "Cathartic pop punk for Animorphs fans" I would say they lean a bit more to the metal side with some big Hair Metal riffs.  They have a debut album coming, which I'm curious to hear.

I learned today the Paranoid Style is actually a DC group, for some reason I thought they were from elsewhere.  Anyways, just got into listening to them recently and there is a lot going on with their records.  Saw someone describe them as brainiac rock.  Thought their set was a little haphazard, but then I saw they perform live like once a year so probably not a regular rehearsing band.  An interesting sidenote, is I had just seen that Peter Holsapple was playing guitar with them and yup there he was last night.  My guess is those of a certain age where surprised/excited to see him up there.

Bad Moves is always a fun band to see live, they really turn in an energetic set.  My only comment is I have certain songs I immediately associate with them which they didn't play last night.  They choose to dig deep into their catalog and do more of their early songs, which I'm less familiar with..  I was thinking we kinda got Dark Bad Moves verses Party Bad Moves.  Which of course means I'm in for that final show at Black Cat.

Happy birthday Space
He missed it. He’s in Portugal.

Thanks Cock. It's much more rare when I check the message board on taxpayers time these days.

Thought the Bob Mould show was among the very best I've ever seen him do. J Robbins is an awesome opener, and it was a great time...but Bob's performance really was superlative. I felt like that was the closest to Husker Du that I'll ever see. It was relentless, a truly powerful show. And better than what I saw in New York, which I felt was already pretty fantastic. It also highlighted how his last string of 6 or so LPs really are some of his strongest and most consistent work. Some of those songs could have easily held up on a Husker Du record..."Next Generation", "Fireball", "You Say You", "Losing Time", "Hard to Get", "When Your Heart is Broken"...those are some incredible songs.

Agreed! It was great!

Also how could I forget “Sleeping In The Wet Spot”
by the red aunts?!?

<SpaceTAN>
that song woke up a decades-old memory: a guitar magazine that i had in the mid-90's had a cartoon called "the illustrated history of the electric guitar."  one panel was about how punk rock helped open up guitar to everyone, including women - and the accompanying illustration was of a stereotypical riot grrl band - shaved mohawks, baggy flannel & all - singing "AIN'T GONNA SLEEP IN THE WET SPOT NO MOOOOOOOOORE!".  i wonder if the red aunts saw that cartoon and decided to finally make that song happen in 2011-2012.

Sleep Token - Even In Arcadia

on my second listen.  will be very high up, if not at the top, of my album of the year list (not that i usually make one...).  hasn't grabbed me like their previous album has, but that took a while so TBD with this new one.

objectively, it's more of the same - not gonna convert anyone, but amazing if their music works for you.  the faithful are collectively losing their shit over these 10 tracks.  it's been out for about 12 hours and already climbing the charts (currently #5 on apple music albums chart, expect it to be #1 or #2 next week on spotify).

I also got Thievery tickets but the Charlotttsville show because the venue is super tiny.
