Was Fatboy Slim's Palookaville this year?  I listened to it at a friend's house and could only think "he's fallen a long way baby".

My winner is still - the undisputed champion of disappointment:

   <img src="http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000BFHVJM.02.LZZZZZZZ" alt=" - " />

 And this is the challenger:

 I should have trusted my gut & been warned off by the cheezy cover.

I can't speak to either dissapointment - I have Z and like it but have no other MMJ albums to compare it to

 but damn, if that Rob Dickinson cover isn't hilarious - like something Ricky Martin or someone like that would do...!!

do you mind expounding a little more?  i'm really curious as to why so many MMJ fans on here didn't like this album ... i have all their others, and Z seems like such a natural (and great) progression for them

i don't know if any of you have picked up the MMJ "early recordings" CDs, but james' cover of "west end girls" is worth hearing

I think the biggest disappointment for me was the SFA album "Love Kraft." Which is a shame, because I love just about everything else they've ever released.

Hmmm...Biggest Disappointment this year:

 Thievery Corporation - The Cosmic Game.  All the guest stars in the world couldn't save this from being a mediocre effort on their part.

Give it some more listens.  I am beginning to like it after intitially having the same reaction as you.  My biggest gripe is that the album is so heavily compressed, the vocals are way too in your face like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. [/b]
the production on this record is being to annoy me, the frantic playing just sounds contrived, live they loosely up a bit which is why the band will be worth further listens.  i actually like the remix album in part because the vocals are a bit more subdued on it.

 the more i think about it, other than "16 Military Wives" and "The Sporting Life" the new Decemberists just wasn't that compelling.  My current tops of 2005 would definitely be revised by the end of next year.

Funny I had to get over the production to listen to it.  It reminds me of one of the guys who works at Phase studios talking about a band who he recorded.  After they got the thing mastered, it was so compressed and squashed out that he was bummed, made him sound like he couldn't record.
