Most Disappointing Albums of 2005
« on: December 21, 2005, 10:27:00 am »
Trail of Dead gets top billing here, and I'm pretty just-below-lukewarm on the New Pornographers disc. And although I haven't listened to the entire disc, I've heard enough to know that the Fiery Furnaces new album stinks.

The worst album I bought this year was by the Ponys. The Brendan Benson album was nowhere near as good as Lapalco, so I guess I could call that a disappointment, though it wasn't bad.

The Dead 60s isn't fairing well with repeated listens.  I had low expectations for the Louis XIV CD and it was even more of a turd then expected.  Was really bummed by the Little Barrie CD just wasn't as good as an earlier EP, probably one of those bands that are better live.  I enjoyed about half the Danko Jones CD.

Did anyone get Frank Black's "Honeycomb"?  It wasn't disappointing but a bit more low key then expectd, I have a feeling it's one of those which will either grow on me over time or collect dust.

He had some good folks playing on it with him, but I don't think he really pulled it off, based on the couple of songs I heard.

U2 - "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb"
What a lemon! Pun intended  ;)  Seriously, it is unlistenable in my opinion.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I too thought of the new Brendan Benson record.

One Mississippi is very good and Lapalco is a classic, so I was really anticipating the new one.

However, it had no edge whatsoever and wasn't as rockin' as the earlier albums.

Still a decent record, but in my opinion the most disappointing of 2005.

I agree.... Nothing really grabbed me when I've listened to it, the standout track was the duet with according to Allmusic his soon be ex-wife.

I was kinda disappointed by Beck's  Guero. The songs were alright I guess, but nothing on it really thrilled me as I would have liked.

rhett, curious what made you purchase this one. i don't want to pigeonhole your tastes or anything, but it doesn't seem like it's too up your alley, and it got just pretty good, not overwhelmingly great reviews. did robbie fulks give his fellow chicagoans a stamp of approval or something?
