I was thinking the same thing Thursday night during the set. I liked how he just bounced around on stage. and I love the title someone gave his dancing ("i'm a white british guy who's been making soul music for 20 years")I also agree with whoever said he was boxing with himself!

I'm now kicking myself for not complementing him on his dancing skills.

I wish I could have recorded the conversations I had with 3-D. He's a total trip and all around nice lad.

One of the things I remember talking about was karmacoma. I tried getting him to rap me some of the song backstage, but wouldn't do it without tricky or cool daddy g. I even told him that I would fill-in those parts. to say the very least, that conversation was a bit humorous. I'd say off and on that whole evening after the show, we chatted about a total of 40 minutes.

I can explain how it all happened... granted it's a weird, somewhat longish story haha. i'll put it this way, when i got to the 930 club that night, i had no fucking idea that i was going to meet massive attack.

so here's the picture of me w/ robert aka 3D (a girl i met at the party took this for me and emailed it on her phone)

I got her backstage to meet him. Then I officially had backstage passes for Friday. Just...bliss.

I dont get "band-happy" or starstruck for that matter, but I was really REALLY happy to be meeting him/Horace/Liz/Debra.
Woof.

Well, I was right up front. rather close to the center of the stage and almost up against the baracades during the whole show.

I noticed this one guy who was right dead center and he was singing and mouthing the words and all that stuff. I figured after the show, I have to give this dude a high five.

Anyways, I'm minding my own business during my favorite massive attack song (safe from harm), just singing and reciting the words and dancing. I ended up making some serious eye contact with 3D. My 13 year old self kinda went off and was like "i wonder if it's possible to meet him." (little background info- when i was 13 way back in fall of 1998, i had a huge crush on 3D)For the rest of the show, i payed some serious attention to 3D's body language. (i know how dorky, right!)

During the last song, I noticed that 3D signaled to the guy all the way up front who i mentioned earlier in this post. The signal i interpreted it as "meet me in the back for drinks." The second I saw that I thought "fuck, i now have to talk to this guy."

As soon as the show was over, I walked over to where the guy and his friend were standing. Turns out, this guy was more or less a kid. he was younger than me. I'm guessing 18 or 19 years old. We started chatting about massive attack and depeche mode. he was all impressed that I'm friends with a band who opened for Depeche Mode this past spring.

The kid was also impressed that I got 3D to "pay attention" to me as he put it. So I guess I wasn't imaging things haha. I was then invited upstairs. He said "i think we're going upstairs. that's where the band is suppose to be after the show." So I went up stairs and waited around for a few minutes. Realizing I wanted to get a tshirt, I ran back downstairs. I told the kid and his friend to wait up for me. I ran downstairs only to see that the merch booth was closed. I ran back upstairs only to find the kid and his friend were gone. They were already back there.

I stood around for about 30 seconds thinking "oh fucking great. No way I'll get back there." Then out of nowhere, I heard somebody say (this was in an american accent) "You can come in now." There were people ahead of me, so I just played it cool and walked in with them. (turns out they didn't even have backstage passes either. actually, I don't think anyone from the show hanging with the band had a pass of some sort)

I was the last person in there. 3D was standing in the little hallway that led to the hospitality/dressing room. He was introducing himself to people as they walked in. I was the last to walk through and pretty much just ended up hanging out with him for most of the night. He was very polite might I add. He was getting a glass of champaign and offered me some, so it's pretty cool to say that I had champaign with one of the lead guys in massive attack    not to mention, later on he handed me a piece of chocolate haha. we had a slight discussion on how awesome milk chocolate is.

I did meet Liz and Horace as well. Very cool people. It was just such an honor to meet them. My older sister was jelous that I got to meet Liz. She grew up on coctaeu twins. (hell my older sis was jelous that I even got to see Massive Attack live)

I'm a journalism student. I've been doing music journalism since I was 15 (6 years ago if you don't feel like doing the math) and I don't normally get star strucked. Then again, it's rare when I go to a concert on my own (as in no interviews, photo passes, backstage passes, free tickets ect) and somehow randomly end up backstage.

I won't lie the whole entire time was quite surreal, even though people were very down to earth. It was funny 3D told me what hotel he and the band were staying at. (I didn't go to the hotel after the party, because I was getting a ride from some very cool people and I knew that my mom would kill me. she was expecting me to call her when I'd get back from the show) Anyway, Robert also asked me if I would be coming back for Friday night and I told him that unfortunately, I am going to the beach for school. (which I did do that this past weekend) he basically said back to me that it was alright and that he too would opt for the beach if he didn't have a show to do, but i thanked him for the offer and gave him my contact info. i told him about my poetry and artwork and he said that he'd like to see it sometime, so that's why i gave him my contact info. it'll be interesting to see if he emails me or something.

oh and one more thing, I did actually get the courage to tell Robert about my crush on him. It was funny, I told Deborah about it and she was like "you should tell him. don't hold anything back. I think he doesn't have a girlfriend might I add."

I hope that was enough details for you haha.

Okay I have to ask, which one were you at the party? we obviously had met. I remember the kid I met at the show somehow got his name on the guest list for Friday's show or so he claimed hehe.

no problem! i love sharing my stories. I have the most insane things happen to me at shows. I just have to laugh that this one happened so randomly. if somebody told me a week ago that this would happen, I would have be like "you're full of crap" haha.

hell, i'm still pinching myself about it.

Not to brag or anything, I have tons of stories... like this past summer, I got to hang out with joan jett on her tour bus at warped tour for about 15 minutes. (her label arranged that for me actually...)

i think another good one (in a simular vein to the massive attack incident) was the first time she wants revenge played DC. they played the black cat with the electric six. this was february of this year. I interviewed them for my radio show and for a magazine here at university of maryland (i go to school there). the interview happened before the show even started and it was terrific. I just got such a kick out of the fact people who were just coming in for doors were like "was that she wants revenge sitting with you?"

during their set, adam (the keyboard player. he's the white one who wears the hats) sends out "someone must get hurt" to me. it's all because i talked to him before the interview about some songs that are therapy for a broken heart. I mentioned to him that "someone must get hurt" has been one of my favorites.

my night got even better... after the show, my sister and i went downstairs to the backroom where right round (80's dance party) was happening. my sister told me we had to go to it, because she ran into swr and they wanted to hang out with us. I thought she was being full of shit, ya know. Well to my surprise, I ended up chilling with Adam and Justin until 2:30 am. For some reason, they picked my sister and i to hang out with after the show.

I've seen them a few times after that and each time i've seen them, something awesome happens. the last time i saw them which was back in july, i celebrated my birthday with them.

back in may, i saw them open for depeche mode. I had tickets before they were even announced as the opening act. at the concert, they knew i was going to be there. Justin gave me this huge shoutout in front of i think atleast 2000 people. I about died when he was talking to me from the crowd and I wasn't very close to the stage at all. I was in the 102 section of nisan pavilion. My mother who was at the show with me was like "megs, he's talking to you..." she said I looked like i was going to faint.

back in april, they did another gig at black cat, on the way to that show, i ran into steven from Fuse TV. he's the host of "steven's untitled rock show" and some other stuff on that channel. It was so random.

I do realize how lucky I am. I remember when I was in middle school and early high school wishing I could be the kid who got to meet bands, and now for the most part, I have that odd skill and priviledge. I think in part it's from doing music journalism since i was 15 (i'm now 21) and being a dj. I do realize that musicians are just normal people for the most part  ;)  so I guess keeping a cool head is always a good thing.
