Being a realist.  I don't think he deserved a room and I wouldn't have tought a hospital would give me one if I had the same ailment.

Insurance is for medical coverage, not hotel coverage.  The reality is, his eye injury changed his plans for the night, but that means he should have gotten a hotel room, not a hospital bed.

My hotel thought I had pink eye and threw me out a few hours before I went to the hospital.

As I said in a PM to someone, I'm not alleging the hospital did anything wrong. I'm sure everything was 100% by the book. It's just that "the book" stinks in the US.

I'm sure we'd all agree that if someone is literally blind and cannot see, in no other civilized country would a hospital wheel them out to the front and be like, "lol, later!" If I attempt to go anywhere -- since I cannot see -- do I not pose a health risk to myself or others? What's to stop me from wandering into the street and getting struck by a bus? If the hospital has a room, and I have sufficient insurance/money to cover it, is there really a harm in keeping me "in observation" for a few hours?

And that's where your real beef should be, ladies and gentlemen.

They were wrong, and you should have gone back and gotten your room back and comped.  Maybe a suite even.  And they call themselves the hospitality industry....

I knew something didn't make sense in that story.

ding ding ding. That's the sound of the hammer meeting the head of the nail.

Did your injury cause you to double post? That's really a cheap way to up your post count in an effort to catch up to me.

To be fair, it was a "youth hostel" with dormatory style sleeping, so I completely understand if they think I have a communicable disease tossing me.

But my bigger point is, I had absolutely no way to get back there. I could not see. At all.

Yeah, I don't know what happened there. Your post count title is safe, no worries.

I'm sure there were. I heard them call one for a guy to send him to a shelter. Again, I'm not saying they did anything wrong. I'm just saying, if they could've gotten the $$ for a room (since I have insurance), and I wouldn't pose a danger to myself if I stayed in a hotel room and couldn't see, what's the harm in giving me one. Certainly if my vision hadn't returned and I was still in a world of pain, they could justify I still needed medical care. It's not like I would've been taking a room from someone else who needed it more.

The whole argument is ridiculous anyway. We all agree the hospital did nothing wrong, just some of us are nasty evil socialists who dream of France's level of medical care.

 Cheers.

Except that that would be fraud - easily in the top 10 reasons for increased health care costs in America.

I'm sorry this happened to you and it's a shitty night over all, but I agree with the hospital.  And don't think anything would have been different in France - the doctors would probably have been on strike.

Don't be such a douchebag, "vansmack."  What if it was your "smackette" or "Smurfette" or whatever the f you call her?  Would you still be so "Well, the hospital did the right thing, you should blame the youth hostel?"  Quit smelling your own farts.  Jules, should have been treated a LOT better by the hospital.  And this is coming from a family that actually HAS some people in it who are doctors and medical professionals.  Not some misguided DC hipster who thinks he knows everything.  I'm sorry if I interrupted your NPR, fogged up your glasses or broke your precious iPod.

So this is now a hipster thing?? Nice! i was in a similar situation - and got the same result. the difference was i had NO insurance at the time. stupid lapse or something. I also walked out with a $1000 bill. They treated me for my ailment, and the only difference was they called my parents for me (at my request). i wasnt functionable (long story) and really out of it, so there was no way i could drive.

but i too had to wait in the waiting room for them to come. I was in ER and it was New Years Day and plenty of us were there for all sorts of things. Even if they had a spare bed - I didnt expect one at any point.

Hospitals ARE NOT hotels. get it through your head. They treat people. And we dont live in the UK/Canada/France/Cuba where something might have been done differently.

Just let me know when the right time is to tell you that Smackette is a doctor, and that she'll more than likely agree with me.  But you can keep going if you'd like.

See above.  I haven't lived in DC in over 4 years and everybody on this board knows that.  It just confirms what we've thought all along - YOU ARE NOT VERY SMART AND DON'T PAY THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF ATTENTION TO ANYBODY BUT YOURSELF.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go smell my own farts.
