World Cup of Hockey
« on: August 31, 2004, 09:51:00 am »
Any hockey fans on the Forum? The Finns thrashed the Czechs yesterday (bit of a surprise IMHO) but the real action starts tonite when Canada plays the US.

Being the impartial observer that I am, I'm predicting the Canadians will go the entire way, though the Swedes are scaring me out of my jockstrap. Give the Slovaks the nod as the tournament dark horse.

It'll be a tough night for me. I'd love to cheer strongly against the Mounties, but they've got Lemieux. Being from Pittsburgh, that'd be borderline treason. So...I'll just watch casually. Hoping Mario scores 4 goals & the US wins 5-4.   :D

well, sorta like the olympics, but since there are only 8 teams, everyone advances out of pool play, making it much less important.

looks like there are 2 divisions of 4. everyone plays everyone else in thier division, then they get seeded into the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

Canada, USA, Slovakia, and Russia are in one
Sweden, Finland, Germany and Czech are another.

It's a little known fact that the Fins were actually the first to land and walk upon the moon. Much like an experienced mountain climber - they were able to accomplish this feat without the aid of supplemental oxygen.

How can the Swedes win? Its Canada's national pastime, they can't lose.

I'd love to say that hockey is our game but the Russians proved us wrong in 1972. The US are actually the defending champions of the World Cup but given that Canada won the last Olympic Gold, that sorta gives us bragging rights.

The only reason I count out the Swedes is Tommy Salo. His incredible blunder against Belarus in 2002 is going to weigh heavily on him.

Can't wait to see the Canada/Russia game in Toronto. We'll bring back the old '72 chant: "Da! Da! Ca-na-da! Nyet! Nyet! So-vi-et!". (give us a break - it's the best we could do being tanked on Labatts 50).
