yeah, i'm not sure if i'm with you on this one jag ... many times a show is just another piece in the puzzle of a night out, i'd rather spend an hour or two hanging out with friends at a bar than listening to an opener i know i won't like

Yeah - I've missed a few good ones, but I've seen many, many bad ones.  I don't need to see every single band on every single bill.  Sometimes I'd rather just take my time, eat a real dinner and unwind from being at work all day before scrambling to head downtown to catch some mediocre opening act.   Sometimes I go early.  Sometimes I don't.  It's not about being too cool.  It's about not wanting to waste 2 hours sitting at the bar downstairs when I'd rather be doing other things.

I always used to show up for the opener, but in more recent years became disapointed with the shyte that walked on stage, so lost interest a bit to be honest. It seems that concert promoters used to use opening band opportunities to promote talented up and coming bands, but now they just seem to put any old crap out there on stage. Or maybe the talent pool is extremely shallow these days.

 Am I wrong.....?

Now this begs the question....what's the worst opening band you've ever been unfortunate enough to have to suffer through?

 I'll start, there's quite a few actually.

Primal Scream opened for The Waterboys in 1989 at Constitution Hall.

Best! The Cranberries opened for The The at Lisner in 198? in the days when everyone thought a cranberry was a cure for a womans itchie you-know-what!

This is easy.  Morning Wood, opening for Kasabian and The Music earlier this year.  That band was so bad, and the lead singer so awful, I was GLAD I'd seen them since I learned to stay far, far away from them.

And, now they're getting buzz with a new video.  Their label is pushing them and people are into them.  Ugh.

Worst opening band ever:  Butt Trumpet

I forget who they opened for.  I want to say Fear at the old club, but I'm not really sure.

Wrathchild were pretty horrible too, opening for the Ramones (7/1/84 - Wax Museum).

Guv'ner opening for Belle and Sebastian at the Black Cat were pretty horrible, I worked a show once when the Cravin' Dogs opened for God Street Wine and that was insufferable. I remember having to go down the hallway to their dressing room to give them something and it reeked SO badly of B.O. It was nasty. I always liked Rasputina as an opener, but the last time I saw them open for B&S they were HORRIBLE. They even went so far as to butcher one of Belle and Sebastian's songs, which I thought was tacky.

don't diss guv'ner, they were awesome at that show opening for belle & sebastian. i am very certain i was one of the few who thought that, though. i had to wait outside forever to get in and when i got in i asked someone how long guv'ner had been on and if they played a song called "she's evil" and she was like, "wait, you actually know and like this band?" but yeah, i loved guv'ner. and that was a really great show, although that show might have been the peak of indie-pop preciousism.

worst opener will always be demolition dollrods opening for blues explosion the first month the new club was open, back in '96. i am still scarred to this day. an unknown at the time matchbox 20 opening for the lemonheads the next year was pretty fucking awful, too.

even having escaped detroit, i'm not remembering having witnessed ddr in "concert".  i do recall an awards show appearence that involved the wearing of little more that a jock strap for the lead singer.  rumour has it that they landed a spot on a iggy tour due to a little backstage favor from one of the dolls.

Generally speaking that's how the Black Cat's set times usually work, but hey, nothing is 100% guaranteed. It's usually pretty accurate though.
