http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=1749847 The Washington Capitals further slashed payroll via trade Wednesday, sending defenseman Sergei Gonchar to the Boston Bruins.
The trade was reported by TSN, a Canadian cable sports network, on its Web site Wednesday.
Sources told TSN that the Caps likely will acquire Boston defenseman Shaone Morrisonn and two draft picks. The deal will not be official until the teams report it to the league.
In order to reduce payroll, the Capitals have jettisoned Jaromir Jagr, Peter Bondra and Robert Lang in recent trades. Gonchar, 29, is in the final year of a four-year, $13.95 million contract that will pay him $3.65 million this season.
Gonchar's 49 points are tops among NHL defensemen.
