I read that performers/bands at South By Southwest get paid at most $175.

The list of shows I would prioritize is below, with varying levels of stars indicating importance of my catching them (alas, I'm out for this year, but definitely in for 2006).  Some bands I left off 'cuz I've seen them so many times or they come to DC a lot...

There are too many for me to list. And really it's almost too painful to look at. A great selection this year. I will make it one of these times! Maybe this means CMJ will also be especially good this year.

If anybody has been since they went to the Wrist band system and could share their experiences, I'd appreciate it.

As I understand it, you can only buy them in Austin, and wristband folks can only enter a venue after the Platinum and Music Badge folks have gotten in.  Is my understanding correct?

It is true that badges get first priority for getting into shows. For the more popular events usually there are 2 separate lines, one for badges and one for wristbands, and badgeholders get in first. If the club isn't at capacity, then they start letting in wristbands.
Generally  if you have a wristband it just means you have to be more selective about what shows you go to, and always have a backup choice. For a really hot band, you may just have to get to the venue for the 8pm band and stay there to see whoever is coming on later.
If you have a badge, you can usually get in to a different club for every time slot, but there are always a few shows that are impossible even for badgeholders to get into without getting there insanely early.
There are lots of daytime showcase parties also, for some you need invitations but not all. So it's possible to catch a band in the afternoon at a party that you probably wouldn't be able to get in to see at night.

Thanks twangirl, for the detailed explanation.

There will be a group of us - some badge holders, others with wristbands, and I was just wondering how often we'd be at the same venue together.

As I expected, it looks like not too tough for most of the bands we're interested in, really tough for the stuff the radio program wants us to cover.

The party stuff sounds intriguing as well.  Looking forward to it!

That's an excellent and accurate summary by twangirl.

I'll be missing the festival for the first time in a decade this year...and I'm not happy about it  :(

Take her advice about the afternoon parties. They are often more fun than the showcases. And they usually have free beer & food

The Yard Dog gallery on South Congree hosts an always amusing Bloodshot Records party - on Friday I believe.

Then they come back on Saturday with a YepRoc/Harp Mag party - this year featuring:
 Robyn Hitchcock
 John Doe
 Marah
 Legendary Shackshakers
 Ian Moore

I wouldn't miss this one if I was going - Both Marah & the Shackshakers were pretty incredible under that tent last year.

 Start checking out parties here:

The only negative about the afternoon parties is that they make for some pretty long days.

But hey - that's why you're there. Live like a rock star!

Maybe it's best if I just pretend it's not happening, because when I click on my own link & the first thing that pops up is:
   <img src="http://www.donewaiting.com/sxsw/archives/woxy.jpg" alt=" - " />

 I get even sadder.

 The Frames/The National/Earlimart together @ a free party?!?!?!

I played at Gallaudet once.  We rented a sound system from a metal band called Souls at Zero and set up in an enclosed concrete loading dock and turned the bass up as loud as it could go.  Pretty odd but cool experience.
