I could have played drums for the Beatles and it wouldn't have changed a thing.  Except for the songs he sang, I guess.  Cause I can't sing.

People hate on Ringo so much.  I think he's horribly underrated.  He wasn't a flashy basher like Moon or Bonham...but his chops were always tasty and totally on point for the song at hand.  Ringo always got the exact right feel for the song.

I love Ringo's drumming... on a lot of stuff he has a really great sound..particularly the later sound.. i'm guessing some will credit George Martin and the recording but I always think its Ringo's doing..

just don't get the criticism for the guy...to me it seems to have become a commonly accepted view that sprung from a joke or something...

I mean when the Beatles decided to upgrade from Pete they went out to get Ringo because they thought he was real good.. .its true he didn't get the sound George Martin wanted on one of the early songs (I thnk)..maybe the whole thing stems from that..

I mean they didn't get him for his looks! they went out and from what i read got the most respected drummer in the Liverpool scene..

When they were getting ready to record their first single , Love Me Do, Martin told the band that live they could do what they wished, but that if they recorded with him that he would bring in a pro.  Apparently pete didn't really fit into the group dynamic anyway, so they dumped him.  Martin remained stubborn and insisted on using his guy for the track, but soon learned Ringo was more than up to the task as he obviously drummed on everything else.

"Love Me Do" was recorded by the Beatles on three different occasions with three different drummers at EMI Studios at 3 Abbey Road in London:

-    EMI Artist Test on 6 June 1962 with Pete Best on drums.[13] This version (previously thought to be lost) is available on Anthology 1.
-    First proper recording session 4 September 1962. In August, Best had been replaced with Ringo Starr. Producer George Martin did not approve of Best's drumming for studio work. It was the norm at that time to have a specialist studio drummer who knew the ways of studio work. The decision to fire Best was not Martin's. The Beatles with Starr recorded a version at EMI Studios.[14]
 -   Second recording session 11 September 1962. One week later, the Beatles returned to the same studio and they made a recording of "Love Me Do" with session drummer Andy White on drums. Starr was relegated to playing tambourine. As tambourine is not present on the 4 September recording, this is the easiest way to distinguish between the Starr and White recordings.

For what its worth, Ringo's son Zak Starkey did play drums for the Who on at least 1 tour
