You could call them one album wonders?

I mean the Outfield album Play Deep has three bonafide hits

"Your Love" was one of those 80s hits that I really, really despised at the time. I'd probably enjoy it now for nostalgia's sake though.

That line "Josie's on a vacation far away" is one of the most recognizable openers in all the 80s

and this great SNL skit
(I love that the subtitles are in Russian ...very 2020)

Actually didn't realize they were a British band (where they barely charted)

Hot take: The phrase "one-hit wonder" isn't meant to be taken literally.

exactly it's also widely applied to bands that have had longevity beyond their hit... i.e Jesus Jones who I think have referred to themselves jokily as a 1.5 Hit wonder

Disagree

There are real one hit wonders

You can’t call a band like Mr Mister with two number one hits a one hit wonder

James Randi, Magician and Paranormal Debunker, Dies at 92
Illusionist known as “The Amazing Randi” also founded Committee for Skeptical Inquiry

"Randi even helped spice up the theatricality of rock star Alice Cooper, helping him to build his guillotine stage prop as well as touring with him in the ’70s."

Jerry Jeff Walker
Jason Narducy has the best stories...
I went to a Chicago radio station early one morning in 1993 because there was a rumor Pete Townshend might show up to do an interview. I was hoping I could meet Pete. I shared an elevator with a man carrying a guitar so I introduced myself. It was Jerry Jeff Walker.
He was doing an interview at the same station. I was honest with him about why I was there. JJW said “Oh yeah - Pete’s great. Say, why don’t you pretend to be my assistant so you can come into the station with me. You’ll have a better chance at meeting Mr. Townshend that way”
I accepted his offer and was excited to get into a little harmless mischief with a legend like him. I stood in the control room while JJW was interviewed. A station employee asked me, “Does Mr. Walker need anything?” I looked up and said “What?” I’d already forgotten my role. “Oh! If Jerry didn’t ask for anything then he’s fine”.
After the interview, we walked down a hallway along with station staff members and JJW smiled and said very loudly “Nice to meet you, Jason!” The staff looked at me, confused. He was really having fun now and I was on my own. I could no longer hang out waiting for Pete.
So I jumped in the elevator to get a couple more mins with Jerry Jeff Walker. I was 22 and starting to get a little attention from the “music industry”. I told him ASCAP wanted to sign me and asked him if BMI was better. He got off the elevator and before the doors closed he said...
“They’ll both fuck you, son”
The doors closed.
