60s Party Playlist: Help
« on: June 29, 2007, 11:27:00 pm »
we're throwing me an early birthday party tomorrow (saturday) night for me here at RISD.  it's going to be 60s themed, and i'd like to play a mix of fun 60s rock/pop tunes, along with any other extremely dancey rock.
i don't want people to leave my party, and keep in mind that these are 16-18 year old kids, so if i don't have them dancing, they won't stay.  but it's also my party, so i refuse to play shitty music.

i've got a good baseline playlist, but i'd still like some solid suggestions.  fast.   so, please?  pretty please?  help!

all you have to do is put on all 4 Nuggets CDs (or go on bittorrent and get them there) ... if that won't last you, get the Nuggets, Vol. 2 for 4 more CDs

some of my favorite club bangers off of Nuggets:

The 13th Floor Elevators - "You're Gonna Miss Me"
 The Barbarians - "Moulty" (hilarious)
The Easybeats - "Friday on My Mind"
The Human Beinz - "Nobody But Me"
The Kingsmen - "Louie Louie" (of course)
 The Litter - "Action Woman"
Michael & the Messengers - "Romeo & Juliet"
The Strangeloves - "I Want Candy"
 The Sonics - "Psycho"

Human Expression - Readin' Your Will
The Del Vettes - Last Time Around
Them - I Can Only Give you Everything
The Sparkles - No Friend of Mine
The Heard - Stop it Baby
The Chob - We're Pretty Quick
 The Tamrons - Wild Man
 The Stoics - Hate
 Prodigal - You Got Me.

I could go on and on.  There are a million great no hit wonders out there.  Start with Nuggets and then dig up the really sick stuff on the Teenage Shutdown and Back from the Grave comps.  You should be able to download a lot of it.   I used to be a garage-rock dork and there is so much of this stuff out there.

Don't forget 60's mainstays like Love, the Zombies, Velvet Underground, Stooges, MC5, CCR, the Doors.

In a super rush at the moment so can only note a few. Wish we had more time for this as I love 60s music! In fact, it's at the root of why I love Shoegaze music. A lot of very good ones already listed. Sorry if I duplicate. One or two of these might dip into 1970 or so but they fit the mood.

Mystic Eyes - Them (Van Morrison's original group)
Inscence And Peppermints - The Strawberry Alarm Clock
 96 Tears - ? And The Mysterians
 Wild Thing - The Troggs
 Sky Pilot - The Animals
A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harem
LA Woman - The Doors (Worth it for the intro)
Along Comes Mary - The Association (for mellower moments)
White Rabbit - The Jefferson Airplane
Up Against The Wall Motherfucker! - The Jefferson Airplane (Is that the name of the song? Great protest song.)
 White Bird - It's A Beautiful Day
Journey Through The Center Of The Mind - The Amboy Dukes
Hush - Deep Purple (not that Smoke On the Water crap though!)
 Society's Child - Janis Ian
As Tears Go By - Marianne Faithful
 Gold Finger - Shirley Bassey
Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers
 Magate Brain - Funkadelic
 Lies - The Knickerbockers
My Friend Jack - The Smoke (or maybe the song is called Sugar Lumps)

Almost anything by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes, The Temptations & The Monkees providing you stick with something earlier or, at least, from the 60s itself, especially regarding The Stones.

Because I'm in a rush, I'll just list a few other bands and take it from there. Others will probably pick up my dropped ball.

 Donovan
 Martha & The Vandellas
 The Ronettes
 Sam & Dave
 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
 The Searchers
Lulu (To Sir, With Love for those graduation moments)
 Gary Lewis & The Playboys
 Freddy & The Dreamers
 Very early Beach Boys
 Jan & Dean
 The Ventures
 The Spencer Davis Group
 The Chocolate Watchband
Ultimate Spinach (might get too spacey for you though)
 The Electric Prunes
 Arthur Lee & Love
 The Buffalo Springfield
Janis Joplin (something early with Big Brother & the Holding Company)
 The Jimi Hendrix Experience
something from the 1st Terry Reid album
Curved Air (Might be '70 and almost left them off since they might get a little too cerebral but you will be with a bunch of Art students so it could work. One of my very favorite bands from back in the day.)
 The Shangrilas (spelling?)
 The Isley Brothers
 Sam Cooke
 Glaydes (K?)Night & The Pips
 Sly & The Family Stone
 very, very early Pink Floyd
 Peter & Gordon
 Chad & Jeremy
 The Mamas & The Papas
 Creedence Clearwater Revival
 Ike & Tina Turner
 The Crystals
 The Marvelettes
The Surpremes (definitely stick with something early)
 The Kinks
 early Bob Dylan
 Iron Butterfly
 The Pretty Things
 The Left Bank

Don't forget to include somewhere along the line, She Was Just 17 by The Beatles and, even though not 60s specific, Ladytron's Seventeen.

You could end the night on a very moody note with Moon River by Andy Williams.

 Oh, and Betty....

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Damn, this thread has me intriqued!

Damned editing timer!!!

 The Locomotion - Little Eva
The Name Game - (Is that Little Eva too?) (WARNING: This song is addictive!)
Sonny & Cher had some good songs early on

I know some of the songs I mentioned in the previous thread aren't Dance tunes but sometimes you need a lull for a breather or a chance for more intimate moments. (Break out the chaparones separating the teens! LOL) All depends on the mood and tone of the group of people and what seems to float their boats.

Kosmo, I need some help. Who did the Pop songs for these dances? The dementia is sinking in and it all escapes me.

 The Watusi
 The Jerk
 The Monkey
 The Mashed Potato
 The Madison
 The Hitchhike
The Peppermint Twist - Chubby Checker (though it might have been '59 but still a big early '60s fave)
And was there a song for The Frug?

Then there was The Bristol Stomp which wasn't even a real dance though a great tune for dancing.

 For Econo:
The Martian Hop - (Was it the Del Rays or someone like that?)

Then there was that dance that I've never seen written. Only spoken about in very hushed tones. The one all the 'bad' kids did because it was so lustful. LOL. Keep in mind, this was before the Summer of Love when the world was much more neurotic. Sorry if I've spelled this wrong since I suspect it was often mispronounced. The Bodie Green. Maybe Boodie Green, Boatie Green, Boudy Green or even supposed to be Booty Green. (Long 'o')

Sam and Dave - "You've Got Me Hummin"
Booker T. and the MGs - "Green Onions"
 Going to a Go-Go - "Smokey Robinson"
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - "Dancing In The Streets"
Bob and Earl - "Harlem Shuffle"

 Easybeats - "Sorry"
The Rationals - "I Need You"
Tom Jones - "What's New Pussycat"
Andy Williams - "Music To Watch Girls By"
