As an individual he's interesting.  As a film maker...?

What's not to like?  HHe's done some good stuff.  His "Simpsons" character is funny.  And he's from Baltimore!

Maybe he is a bit.  But we are better off with him than without him.  If it weren't for guys like John Waters we'd be forced to choose between films like Armageddon and Bridgette Jone's Diary every time we wanted to go see a movie.

Shouldn't one have to be popular (in the mainstream sense) before one can be called "overrated"? Seriously, step off the coasts and ask folks what they think of Waters. I wonder how many people have seen his pre-Hairspray films.

Outside of the popularity gained by that film becoming a Broadway musical, and that isn't really due to Waters per se, most of his films are very much off the radar for most people.

But then again, I love John Waters because he carries on the sleazy traditions of Russ Meyer (RIP) by pushing the taste envelope. And as Doc Doom mentioned, he's a local boy who films his movies in and around Baltimore as well as holding premiere screenings there.

two words: "pink flamingos"

 two more words: "mondo trasho."

yet again, as above: "cry baby."  (johnny depp, ricki lake, iggy pop what???)

caveat: john waters isn't very shocking amidst the internet age.  patty hearst nowithstanding.

i've played pink flamingos for a few friends who had never seen it...it never fails in its manifest to revolt and shock, particularly the "how much is the doggy in the window" scene at the end.  it's trashy and low budget but what else would you expect from a film made in phoenix, md.

mondo trasho, polyester and hairspray are great also...and as for his simpsons appearance, i've always thought of waters as a cartoon character personified.  waters overrated?  no way.

Different strokes and all, but I've seen many of his films, both his old-school & new, and I find them curious, rather than compelling.  Hairspray is his Magnum Opus, IMO, but it's no masterpiece.  Perhaps my opinion would be different if I had seen his earlier films in the 70s, as they were released.

Not as overrated as Cronenberg, that's for sure.
