When Lucinda Williams WAS young, she was playing straight up blues, not watered down country-rock.

Perhaps I was just turned off from the first time I saw her, at Bumbershoot. After being given a nice introduction by the dj from the radio station that was sponsoring the stage she was playing on, she promptly took the stage and flipped the dj the finger. Nice gal.

She just strikes me as playing a role, rather than being the real thing.

there's more genuine emotion in one verse of that album than sheryl crow's career ... just saw that she has a new album, don't have that yet

fair enough, i only really know her through her debut LP (which i obviously really like), not the hype in the alt-country world ... but that kind of fakeness pisses me off too

and i should have been more specific, kathleen's debut LP reminds me of lucinda's s/t LP (not her late 70s stuff)

Where have you been? Her new album has been out for over five months.

I did buy Failer for $1 at the CD Game Exchange, hoping it would grow on me. It didn't.

Her most prominent emotion is whining. She's a fucking whiner. And nobody enjoys a whiner. Probably why people sometimes get sick of me on here.

well, i'm clearly not plugged into the alt-country world ... "hockey skates" and "six o'clock news" are fantastic songs, and i find them "melancholy", not "whiny" .. but to each to his own ...

I was referring to this one:
   <img src="http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drg600/g669/g66970xbvry.jpg" alt=" - " />

Which is generally considered to be at least as "good" as the debut

How about "One More Song the Radio Won't Like"?

...well yeah, maybe because it SUCKS. Stop whining and write a good song, damnit.

Lyrics for Song: One More Song the Radio Won't Like
 Lyrics for Album: Failer
Johnny little rocket star flashing the label's credit card
His name is at the door but no one knew what for
 Says he's got a strategy
I'm a test of his sanity
 Wire cars and whiskey
 Bad debts and dirty laundry

You can't even make up my mind
One more song the radio won't like

Reel it in and shut your mouth
 Reputations are in doubt
Write a hit so I can talk you up
No one likes a girl who won't sober up

You can't even make up my mind
One more song radio won't like

So brush your hair and straighten up
Put down the drink you just got
 Johnny little rocket star
Picked up a girl at the bar

 So I keep my sanity
 Wire cars and everything
I guess that we are through
 The bad advice from you

You can't even make up my mind
One more song the radio won't like

you don't want to let this die, do you?  i just did some reading, and for a girl in her early 20s, not even close to stardom, i don't think this is a shitty song at all ... now if it was on her second album, i might have some issues ... definitely not my favorite on the album though

this is by the very minimum of standards a "good country song", i would consider it "very very good":

 --------------------------------------

Copper on the corner and he loaded two rounds
And I canâ??t even cross the line to talk you down
Peter, sweet baby, whereâ??d you get that gun?
You spend half your life trying to turn the other half around

And I tried to come clean, but I guess itâ??s no use
Your face is all over six oâ??clock news
They cleared the street and then they closed the schools
 I canâ??t even get inside

Did you lose your head when the farm went down?
Was it when your daddy died after he moved to town
And I know your momma calls you good for noth
She says her baby is a failer and she donâ??t want you calling

 [chorus]

Peter, sweet baby, thereâ??s just something that I ought to say to you
I'm gonna have your baby this coming June
We could get a little place down by Gilmour Park
You could do a little time and save my broken heart

 [chorus]

I tried to come clean but I guess it's no use
Copper went ahead and he just shot you through
Now youâ??re lying dead on the avenue
And I canâ??t feel my broken heart (x2)

You just like it because she says your name.

They don't even have guns in Canada. Thus, she's a poseur.

Isn't it fruitless to argue the worth of a song by only presenting lyrics?

It's like sending a text message to describe the Mona Lisa.

And some of the best songs EVER have questionable lyrics.

 Exhibit A:
Squeeze me baby, till the juice runs down my leg.
The way you squeeze my lemon, I'm gonna fall right out of bed.
