the restaurant is actually not bad (though a little pricey), and they have good microbrews on tap

No. It's similar in size, shape, and sound quality. There are tables in the back for every show I've been to, however. The restaurant is actually downstairs (the venue is second floor).[/b]
I think they are nothing alike.
State Theater is just that - a theater.
I'd compare Starr Hill to Iota (if Iota had two levels).
xcanuck - sent you more details...

Yeah, I agree, I would say the two are very different.  Seeing a show at Starr HIll is kind of like being in a living room - its very small, and has sort of a weird room shape to it.  Great venue.

only been there once... it's an old movie theater with a long ga floor, it will be more of a rock n' roll experience than the birchmere.  some forumites enjoy(ed) going to shows there.

I've never been to either. But I believe the Birchmere show is a seated venue, while Recher is not. So that's another thing to take into consideration.

I already have tix for the Birchmere show, but I would go to the Recher show if The Silver Jews wasn't the same night...

There is seating for the Birchmere bandstand shows, and there is also standing. If you opt to stay seated you're not going to see anything.

Two advantages of Birchmere are that it's nonsmoking (i think), and the show finishes a lot earlier.

Overpriced and mediocre, by general 9:30 board consensus.

Very limited selection if you happen to be a vegetarian. The vegetarian red pizza is tolerable.

One thing I found amusing is that they charge the same price for a pitcher of Bud Lite as they do for a pitcher of Sierra Nevada.
