And of course outside of narrow  “rock and roll” confines which really should be called “youth music” there are a ton of critically important musicians who peaked after 40.

The Astor Piazzolla cd I am listening to is from when he was about 65.

What about Cesaria Evora who by most accounts was working as a maid and by some as a prostitute until discovery in her late 40s?

Miles Davis?

The greatest Spanish lyricist, Joaquin Sabina, peaked in his 40s

Jorge Ben was certainly peaking past 30

It’s a bit of a tautology to argue youth music made by young people for young people is considered to peak when they are young… like, obviously, if young people get old and stop being able to absorb new music then the music made by young people is the only one that can be good to them

I think there are studies that demonstrate that there is a certain age where music really hits you hard

Nick is another outlier
by far some of his best output is post 30

David Bowie..quite a bit after 30
Nick Cave sucks and none of his output is any good.

Bowie's Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, and Station To Station-Low eras are all from 30 and before. While I like Let's Dance as much as anyone, it's far from his peak.

Geez Yada zeppelin if you listen to their live recordings was very often a mess which is what surprised me about how tight their fifth to last show ever is

But Jimmy Page and in this particular case John Paul Jones - were studio wizards and I think In through the outdoor is a high

I mean isn’t this fundamentally a conversation about creativity?

Even pre RNR there was some youth music…. Sinatra and the whole bobbisoxers wasn’t that much different from Beatlemania yet after the young ladies got married and worried about their men coming home from war…in fact 8 years later…Sinatra began his artistic peak

Some of Matisse’s greatest art happened when he was in his 50s and up

The issue is not the artist being creative past 30 but the listener

Bingo, and you did really hit the nail on the head regarding your Haim recap.

Music is never  as good as it was in your formative years or you're always yearning for the feeling that band X gave you in time Y. It just doesn't happen. Getting old sucks.

I dunno. Tell that to Challenged and Vas. They seem to be making it work and their not young kids.

And I think I'm enjoying music more now than in my teens, simply because I wasn't aware of much of the great music being made when I was in my teens. And I'm enjoying music now more than in my 20's, simply because I was too broke in my 20's to put any resources toward music.
