The Style Council or at least Paul Weller playing Style Council like in NYC earlier this year.  It was the best night of the three night...  And be sure to import lots of Brits to sing along loudly..

Hey Seth, how about Jens Lekman at the 9:30 Club? Someone on here insisted he could sell out the 9:30 Club.

Let me sleep on it, though I think it would be more interesting if it was my $1000 against a 2008 Season pass (not VIP, just entrance) to every show at the club (which I think you should be selling anyway)...

in the mean time I have a serious question and though the answer might be akin to telling a 3 year old that neither the tooth fairy nor santa claus exist... but have you EVER booked a show based solely on a request you received in this forum?

And by solely I mean the band wasn't already on your radar screen (i.e. wasn't touring and made inquiries, or bookers hadn't put feelers out, or it wasn't already on your wish list, etc) when the request came in?

In other words you read the request here, and it was the first time you even thought about it, and then followed up with trying to get more info, and it eventually led to them being booked at the club.

And a bonus question if you HAVE done this, how did it go (sell out, total bomb, broke even, etc.).

And finally if you're feeling particularly forthcoming, who was/were this/these band/bands, or who did you go through most the paces to get but ultimately didn't book?

I apologize in advance for being the wicked warlock of the west and shattering the innocence of those boardies that may find out that you're not actually the wonderful Wizard of DC...

excellent idea, i certainly would have bought one while i was in DC.  but i fear that it would be hard if not impossible to price such a pass up front.

interesting... is this the impression that requests here give you?  that they come from doe-eyed children asking seth-a-claus to put their favorite band under the xmas tree?      :)

maybe for some people, it is just that... and then they cry when there is no santa.  however, i think for most people, posts on this thread are polite request for seth to consider bringing their fav band.  nothing more than asking him to look into it.  it is, after all, his business to bring bands that people want to see.

would you prefer that people not request bands at all, and the 930 be left to its lonesome in figuring out what they should book?  what is wrong with asking?  you portray people here as clueless children asking for the moon - i don't see that, but i'm willing to recognize that my view is rarely perfect.  when has anyone cussed out seth for not fulfilling an impossible request?  when these request go unfilled, seems to me that folks are realistic enough to blame the band, not seth.

agreed, and i realistically think it would sell very well.  that bnycedo thinks it won't sell is fine by me, it's a perfectly valid opinion.  what i don't get is his patronizing and condescending dismissal of our request - we're stupid for even asking.

to stay on topic: hey seth, bring calvin!

I think along these lines... when someone gets paid for something they're a professional.  I for instance don't have clue one about anything automotive (oil change, tire change, anything change) nor plumbing, or a bunch of other seemingly common sense tasks.

But thank goodness the little I do know pays well enough to hire a professional mechanic or a plumber when then need arises.  And when they start their work, I don't look over their shoulders and give them pointers, again they are professionals and if their work sucks I either sue and/or get another one.

In this case, Seth is a professional, it's nice he listens to what the kids say, and it's undoubtedly valuable to know what's hot and what's not, but I can't imagine what a handful (and I think there are less than fifty people that post regularly and shout out requests)  of borderline retarded internet geeks (I'm fully including myself in that description) are influential enough to alter what his professional instincts have him doing already.

But I could be wrong which is why I asked him to clarify if he does actually give a rats ass what we request, because I think these requests are either a validation of something he's already working on, or just white noise.

I don't discourage the requests, just make them realistic, and relevant.  But I don't run the show around, people should ask for whatever the hell they want, and I think it's also alright to berate them when it's a totally over the top fantasy (i.e. european bands not touring anywhere else in the world, broken up bands, artists so obscure their entire fan base would fit in the requesters' living room, etc.).

And do you really want to continue to leave open the flood gates to whomever bull becomes infatuated with this week...my money is on Kate Nash...

fortunately, there's seldom an act requested that I haven't heard of (although it does happen)

all feedback is considered...why wouldn't it be?

you people are my customers...I know it's really cornball to say things like "you are the most important people in the world" but your business and support really is appreciated more than you'll ever know

I really enjoy making people happy by going to see my shows...I never tire of hearing about it and always welocme ideas on who to book and how to make things better

it all has an ifluence...there have been many occassions where I am working on a show and try harder to get it done because it sounds like people really want to see it

but...in general...it's always cool to say anything you'd like here

if you call me a shitty gambler, however, you better be prepared to back it up

I discovered that this past weekend - over and above sir - thank you very much.  Had a great time, had lots to drink and brought back club t-shirts for me and the Mrs to proudly wear around SF. Thanks again.

Touche, but I didn't say I was any better at betting, just pointing out that you're human and that if you had the ability to pull off some of the shit people are asking for you'd probably not be betting on the Raiders in any situation, this coming from a guy who bleeds silver and black...

That said, if you'll put up 1 ticket to my choice 20 IMP shows in 2008, I have $500 against a winner takes all NFL playoff bracket.

As soon as the playoff teams are settled and before the kick off of the first wild card game, we fill out brackets all the way through the superbowl, first person to lose both their superbowl teams is out.  In case of a tie, person with most total wins.

The brackets, my $500, and your IOU for the 20 tickets will be sealed and held by a neutral source (SMACKIE?) and only opened after the superbowl.

Put up, or shut up  :D

Of course I'll book this, but NFL brackets are tough because they reseed after the first round - the fact that it's a bracket is irrelevant.  What you've really asked for is to pick a super bowl winner, which isn't really gambling.

How about I think of a number between one and ten, and mail it to Smackie in a sealed envelope, and the two of you wager on whose guess is closer? It's gambling in its purest, and most inanely obsessive, form.

I've got lots of bands to request but my most realistic requests at the moment are

Hot Hot Heat as they are bringing along De Novo Dahl  one of my top 10 fav bands at the moment.

Mavis Staples her set at Bonnaroo was a festival highpoint for me.  The CD is amazing as well..

Cheap Trick, The Romantics and the Hoodoo Gurus would be awesome triple bill.  I would take them on their own as well.

Franz Ferdinand at club again would be cool...

If they ever tour the US again, Idlewild, James, or The Coral.
