I like AC/DC as much as the next guy, but I don't know if I'd hold them up as the standard for good music.

But that's just me. Oh, and I'd also suggest that your naming of Black Sabbath needs to be accompanied by a mention of which era you're thinking of. Ozzy's Black Sabbath != Ronnie James Dio's Black Sabbath. Failing to disassociate yourself with liking the Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath seriously harms your credibility.

to answer the question, i absolutely loathe dave matthews' music. and no, i'm not close-minded (unless you think somebody with 5000+ albums can be). when i first heard about him, i was in high school and hung out with some deadheads who tried to turn me on to DMB. i read some stuff about them, how they were multi-racial, had a sax player and a violinist, mixed jazz and folk with rock, etc., and was intrigued. when i finally heard it, i was appalled by matthews' annoying vocals and lack of balls or beauty in any of the music. and what's worse, they've only gotten lamer over the years.

and i hate it when DMB fans refer to him as "dave" and expect you to know who they're talking about. oh really, you saw "dave" last night? i'd rather think of dave fucking navarro instead (and that's not saying much).

 anyway, some other random thoughts:

mucho points for dropping the screamers, chaz. i finally just got a collection of demos and outtakes on vinyl. groundbreaking stuff that has (directly and indirectly) influenced a couple of generations of synthy post-punk.

i know it's hip to hate the dead, but i ain't buying it. they were a great live band in the '60s and their records weren't too shabby, either. i like them pretty much up until 1975, and then they got bad pretty quick. you can say the same thing about genesis, steve miller, and fleetwood mac (though i can find some worth in their california cokehead phase). i did see them a couple of times in the early '90s and those were two of the worst shows i've ever seen.

the allman brothers were also great on record until 1975. though they sucked less than the dead, their records were just predictable exercises on the same formula. however, i have seen them live a couple of times as well and they were terrific (though i have no idea what they're like without dickey betts and with derek trucks). i'm not really intrigued enough to bother, though if someone gave me a free ticket, i wouldn't turn down an opportunity to hear "blue sky" or "whipping post" live again.

i hate phish but not as much as DMB.

good point. I'd like to clear that up Ronnie James Dio totally ruined Black sabbath. The Black sabbath I know and love's singer was Ozzy all the way

i'm a huge sabbath fan (the first six records are untouchable), but i have to disagree here. technical ecstasy and never say die are really not that good. heaven and hell and mob rules are better records, IMO. i know dio is a cheeseball, but he did sing on those two albums, and also was in rainbow, who had some awesome hard rock classics in the mid-'70s. geezer butler wrote much of the lyrics and music for sabbath (as did tony iommi), so it's not fair to say that dio "ruined" the band. they got much worse in the years after dio.

strangely enough, ozzy's best records are with randy rhoads and he's pretty much sucked since then.

is this the third time you've tried to finish this thread off?

dave matthews haters shall not be stopped by a simple: "ok guys, nothing to see here, keep moving" ... looks like you're gonna have to really beg to end this one

All February I listened to nothing but The Jam.  I don't think I have ever heard a Style Council song.

i agree with kosmo's assessment of the style council. early stuff pretty good, later stuff blah. i'll take weller solo over most style council.

the jam could not be fucked with. every record was brilliant.

Sorry but I can't take credit for that.  I think it was Bunnyman who mentioned the Screamers etc., although I did have Group Sex on the stereo earlier.  And before that me and my daughter were dancing around to the first Ramones record.  She'll never know how proud that makes me....

So anyway Bunnyman gets the cool points....my last post was a marriage proposal to Kosmo on the grounds of his undying love for Love and the Detroit Cobras.

well chaz, your undying love for kosmo for his undying love of love has caused me to have undying love for you. since forever changes is my favorite album ever, i hereby decree that you have more points than bunnyman for giving props to the screamers.

does that make up for my fuck-up?

Unlike Kosmo, I'm quite sure you are a rich and beautiful woman.  What are you doing for the next 20 years?  What do you say we hit the road and follow  Love around like a couple of Love-heads?  They're in Europe this spring!

lets talk more style council...

Those singles that transitioned Weller from the The Jam to the Style Council were top notch stuff. I suspect they were orginially written as Jam songs. Just listen to the Jam's vs Style Council version of "A Solid Bond In Your Heart".  As  great of a rhythm section as Foxton & Buckler were, they were a rock solid unit and Weller was wanting to flex his Northern Soul roots which they weren't up to. I've heard "Snap" being associated with Buckler's sound.

So Weller brings in Talbot and drummer extraordinary Steve White and is able to create the new sound with TSC he wasn't able with the Jam . Although things went pear shaped when he tried to do incorporate funk and jazz into the mix and his ego went completely overboard with "Confessions of A Pop Group" complete with a 10 minute Suite.

My ex has it now, but the Style Council boxset included the entire "lost" album his record company refused to release.  I only heard it a couple times and liked it's attempt at fusing house music and Weller's songwriting.
