I don't like jam-bands as a whole, but I love the good ol' Grateful Dead.  I stopped paying attention to the Allmans after they kicked-out Dickey, but up until then they were terrific.  Word is they're still great live, but I couldn't really say.  I saw Dickey Betts last week at the State Theater.  He's still got it.  I never got Bela Fleck.  Just not my thing.  As for Phish, I'd rather have my eyes poked out with a rusty fork.

Ratdog tickets go on sale tomorrow. I'll definitely go to that one.

In terms of what I listen to, these days it's a lot of New Order, Chemical Brothers, Queens of the Stone Age, Cass McCombs, Cocteau Twins, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Interpol, DOA, and I've gotten back to my obsession with the late 70's LA punk scene: The Weirdos, the Germs, X, and best of all...the Screamers.

i'm just a music snob in general and will echo Chaz's comment about DM's lyrics... just because one is a "good" musician doesn't automatically them a good songwriter. dmb is music for drunk white people to dance too, as mentioned is "lite" everything.

want recommendations, seek out Don Dixon, Isaac Hayes, Sly and Family Stone, Love, The Features, The Detroit Cobras, etc lather rinse repeat

I agree on all counts.

I've also caught the Derek Trucks Band a couple of times and, while I wouldn't go out of my way to see him, he's pretty good.

Derek's a great guitar player, but I find his solo stuff a bit boring.

DMB is the worst band i have hever heard. Their music (and i use the term music loosly) is low level crap.  I cant stand to listen to them for more than 10 seconds. Then theres Dave himself any one who thinks he sings well must be clinically retarded (This means you Justin). his voice resembles a goat with epilepsy exiting the womb at 90 MPH.  All you yuppies and preps out there should start listening to some good music like Led Zepplin, AC/DC and Black Sabbath.

I like AC/DC as much as the next guy, but I don't know if I'd hold them up as the standard for good music.

But that's just me. Oh, and I'd also suggest that your naming of Black Sabbath needs to be accompanied by a mention of which era you're thinking of. Ozzy's Black Sabbath != Ronnie James Dio's Black Sabbath. Failing to disassociate yourself with liking the Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath seriously harms your credibility.

I do like a ton of pre-hiatus phish and even some of the post-hiatus shit is ok as well but Trey Anastasio's inability to remember many of his compositions toward the end of their career was too much of a distraction for me to listen to any of their live stuff from 2003-2004. Many of their albums such as rift, a picture of nectar and Junta however are masterpieces imo and their live shit from the 90's->2000 is great.

Hmmmm, interesting take.  I know little of Dave Matthews outside what most fairly aware Joe Public music listeners do.  I saw Matthews at the Move On concert last Fall, and was aghast -- the man played three chords.  I didn't think I was a huge fan, but I found very little musicianship in the sampling played that night.  Though the level of musicianship of an artist or band is not directly correlated to whether people enjoy their music (so I'm not saying Matthews sucks completely, but fine musician seems a stretch...).

Ask a question, get an answer.  That's what people do, esp in a music forum.  We could've told you the ratio of DMB fans here would be heavily weighted towards "not fans."  No one flamed you -- an opinion sometimes includes, "that's the worst music I've ever heard."    ;)
