Ipod's dirty little secret
« on: November 26, 2003, 04:14:00 pm »
Already pretty well documented... and there are ways to avoid the dying battery problem, but an amusing little movie nonetheless.

It is a funny movie..... Replacement batteries are now $100, whilst not cheap, its not too bad. I have a first generation ipod and it is still going strong.

Don't use it.

...Mighty glad that of my three mp3 devices, not one Ipod in the lot.

I've got a 2nd iteration Creative jukebox from the last century.  Tiny gig, but the batteries are nickel metal hydride and they're totally replaceable...though I've never needed to chuck 'em.

Hey, I've never needed to listen to my entire CD collection in one sitiing either, have you?  "Oh yeah, when I go for my morning run I usually like to have 150+ hours of tunes at hand."  What's next?  Virtual reality goggles so you can watch BARRY LYNDON, LOLITA & THE KILLING simultaneously with Leonard Maltin's commentary while jogging?

Well, the cool thing about having your WHOLE cd collection in an MP3 player is that you can hook it up to your stereo, and never have to deal with a jewel case or missing CD again.   It basically replaces your actual CD collection entirely.  Also, I travel on extended trips a lot, and I take my Ipod and a small set of folding speakers with me, and it makes me feel much more at home to be able to listen to anything I might have wanted to listen to at home.

Try a long road trip or cross country air trip.  Sorry, but I love that when I'm suddenly reminded of The Smithereens, I have it with me.

Why the need to harsh on iPods?

And to tell the truth, I've experienced the battery problem. 10 hours is a lie, but you just charge it up.  I have a car charger and a remote charger, so I'm always good.  And by the time my battery dies for good, I'll definitely need the 50 GB....

Yeah, I get about 4 hours from the battery.  Enough for a trip to New York.   :)

For longer trips, all you need is this:

The less than stellar battery life is the only drawback I can think of on my Ipod.  I get about 5 hours on mine.  That said, I've never found myself out in the world with a dead battery.  I just charge the thing up every night.

I LOVE MY IPOD.  LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Bagster was right.  You never know when you'll get the urge to listen to something....It's great to be able to have the collection with me at all times.

Rather than start yet another iPod thread, here's  a link  to an extensive article in the NY Times Magazine on the amazing little beauty.  It's far too long to post....

"Moby, the recording artist, has been a high-profile iPod booster since the product's debut. ''The kind of insidious revolutionary quality of the iPod,'' he says, ''is that it's so elegant and logical, it becomes part of your life so quickly that you can't remember what it was like beforehand.'' "
